  • In this paper, a circular lined-duct is modeled by using an axisymmetric foam finite element, which is based on elastic porous material theory of Biot. For various thicknesses of three kinds of lining materials, finite element predictions are compared with measurement results and Morse's analytical results. While the analytical model has larger error as the lining becomes thicker, results of the present model have a good agreement with experimental results for all the thicknesses considered here. It has also been found that constraining the axial motion on the circumferential surface of the lining enhances sound attenuation at low freqneucies.

  • A numerical model for the thermal response analysis of concrete structures is suggested. The model includes the stress-strain relationship, constitutive relationship, and multiaxial failure criteria at elevated temperature conditions. Modified Saenz's model was used to describe the stress-strain relationship at high temperatures. Concrete subjected to elevated temperatures undergoes rapid strain increase and dimensional instability. In order to explain those changes in mechanical properties, a constitutive model of concrete subjected to elevated temperature is proposed. The model consists of four strain components; free thermal creep strain, stress-induced (mechanical) strain, thermal creep strain, and transient strain due to moisture effects. The failure model employs modified Drucker-Prager model in order to describe the temperature dependent multiaxial failure criteria. Some numerical analyses are performed and compared with the experimental results to verify the proposed model. According to the comparison, the suggested material model gives reliable analytical results.

  • Sound absorbing characteristics of poroelastic materials is known to be greatly affected by high intensity acoustic waves. However, this effect has not been considered yet. In this study, the extended semilinear model based on Biot's theory for the porous materials and the characteristics of nonlinear waves in poroelastic sound absorbing materials were introduced. The expressions for the finite-amplitude acoustic plane waves were presented. By combining each nonlinear wave with appropriate matching conditions, we could investigate the effects of finite-amplitude acoustic waves on absorption characteristics of poroelastic materials. In the most ideal case considered in this paper, the absorption coefficient was found to become larger than that of linear incident waves. It was shown that the absorption coefficient became greater especially as frequency goes higher and as distance from the source goes larger. These phenomena may be inferred to result from 'dissipation effects due to nonlinearity'. This finding may have important implications for high intensity noise control.

  • To investigate the degeneration process in the intervertebral disc, a three dimensional (3D) poroelastic finite-element (FE) model was developed. Disc was modeled as two different regions, such as annulus modeled with fiber reinforced 20 node poroelastic ground matrix and nucleus having large porosity. Excess Von Mises stress in the disc element assumed to be a possible source of degeneration under compressive loading condition. Recursive calculation was continued until the desired convergence was attained by changing the permeability and porosity of those elements, which could be predicted from the previous iteration. The degenerated disc model showed that relatively small compressive stresses were generated in the nucleus elements compared to normal disc. Its distribution along the sagittal plane was matched well with a previously reported experimental result. Contrasts to this result, pore pressures in the nucleus were higher than those in the normal disc. Total stress indicated similar values for two different models. This new approach using poroelastic modeling could provide the explanation of the interaction between fluid and solid matrix in the disc during the degeneration process.

  • In this study, various types of porous beams were designed and analyzed to examine the relationship between the behavior of a porous beam and certain nonlocal parameters. The nonlocal parameters were defined as functions of the conditions of defects in the porous material. Finite element analysis was conducted on the beams under typical boundary and loading conditions. Beams with stiffeners having the same dimensions as the defects in the porous beams were also analyzed. The deformation tendency of these beams was determined and described in terms of the nonlocal parameters. The deformation of a porous beam was linearly proportional to the square of the diameters of the defects, whereas that of a beam with a stiffener was linearly proportional to the cube of the diameter of the stiffener. Furthermore, for a stiffened beam with axial loading, the results derived from a 3D solid element and those under 2D plane stress conditions were different.

  • Porous conductors are known to demonstrate excellent electrical, mechanical, and chemical resistance. These porous conductors demonstrated potential applications in various fields such as electrodes for supercapacitors, flexible heaters, catalytic electrodes, and sorbents. In this study, we described a pressure sensitive device using conductive and porous sponges. With an extremely simple "dipping and drying" process using a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) solution, we produced conductive sponges with sheet resistance of < $30k{\Omega}/sq$. These carbon nanotube sponges can be deformed into any shape elastically and repeatedly compressed to large strains without collapse. The pressure sensors developed from these sponges demonstrated high resistance change under pressure of up to a half of their initial resistance.

  • When porous materials are dried, the particles flocculate into fish-net structure in gel phase. In order to exactly analyze the stress distribution of porous materials during drying process, the elastic tensor of microscopic gel structures has to be predicted considering pore shapes as well as porosities of porous materials. The elastic characteristics of porous materials associated with porosities were predicted analyzing microscopic gel structures with circular and cross pores via homogenization method and the drying processes of the electric porous ceramic insulator were simulated using finite element method (FEM). Comparing analysis results between consideration and negligence of pores, the deformed shape and distributions of temperature and moisture were similar but the residual stress was significantly different.

  • As the properties of porous materials during the drying process relate to the atomistic defects of heterogeneous materials such as dislocation, grain, grain boundary, pore, etc., the knowledge of nano-scale analysis is needed in order to accurately analyze the drying process for porous materials. In this study, the atomic behavior of porous materials Is statically predicted by using the molecular dynamics simulation and the nano-scale material properties are computed. The elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and volumetric heat capacity numerically found from the molecular dynamics simulation are compared with those of experiment and theory and proved the accuracy.
