Magnetic Properties of Polycrystalline ErFe2O4 (ErFe2O4 다결정체 시료의 자기적 특성 연구)

  • We have investigated the magnetic properties of $ErFe_2O_4$. Stoichiometric polycrystalline sample of $ErFe_2O_4$ was prepared by solid-state reaction method in a stream of CO/$CO_2$ gas. The X-ray power diffraction pattern shows that the diffraction peaks are indexed with respect to the rhombohedral structure with a space group of R3m. The temperature dependent magnetization for $ErFe_2O_4$ shows two-step phase transitions at about 220 and 250 K. The transition at 250 K is an antiferromagnetic transition and that at 220 K is a structural transition.

  • Elastic-plastic finite element(FE) simulation was performed for polycrystalline solids subjected to plane strain tensile loading. Using Asaro's double slip crystal plasticity model, the polycrystalline solids were modeled by assigning different initial slip directions to each grain. From the FE calculations, the microscopic deformation characteristics of polycrystalline solids were analyzed. Moreover, the effect of grain size and grain boundaries on the deformation characteristics were clarified.

  • Sinterability and stability of TZP ceramics co-stabilized by 12 mol% CeO2 and divalent or trivalent oxides less than 1 mol% were investigated. Divalent and trivalent oxides increased stability of tetragonal ZrO2. 100% tetragonal ZrO2 phase was obtained by doping 12 mol% CeO2 and 0.2 mol% CaO and MgO respectively when sintering was carried out at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Divalent and trivalent oxides improved sinterability and inhibit grain growth of ZrO2. And it was found that CaO was the most effective sintering aid and grain growth inhibitor for ZrO2 in this study. Incorporation of divalent and trivalent oxides into 12Ce-TZP increased the strength of 12Ce-TZP and particulary 12Ce, 0.4Ca-TZP exhibited a flexural strength of about twofold greater than 12Ce-TZP.

  • Solidification condition for preparing transparent ${\gamma}$-6Bi2O3.GeO2 polycrystals by unidirectional solidification of melt, were investigaetd and the properties of the polycrystals prepared were measured. The ${\gamma}$-6Bi2O3.GeO2 polycrystals showing transparency like a single crystal were obtained by the unidirectional solidification of ${\gamma}$-6Bi2O3.GeO2 melt at a solidification rate of 0.5mm/h under a thermal gradient of 12$0^{\circ}C$/cm. The transparent polycrystals obtained showed the same photoconduction and optical activity as the ${\gamma}$-6Bi2O3.GeO2 single crystals grown by Czochralski method. But the electro-optic effect of polycrystals was heterogeneous because the colummar ${\gamma}$-6Bi2O3.GeO2 crystals were not oriented to the particular crystallographic direction.

  • The high-temperature strength of Ce-TZP was measured at 200, 650 and 100$0^{\circ}C$ by 4-point bending test. And its fracture behavior was observed by SEM. Below $650^{\circ}C$ of the temperature, where monoclinic fraction was almost zero, the decreasing rate of bending strength was relatively slow, but above this temperature, high temperature strength was largely decreased as a result of the decrease of stress-induced transformation of zirconia. The observation of fracture surface bended at 100$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that the fracture mode changed from intergranular-into transgranular-form with regardless of ceria contents.

  • Calcia stabilized zirconia polycrystal (Ca-TZP) powders synthesized by hydrothermal treatment was sintered at a temperature range of $1200^{\circ}C~1400^{\circ}C$ and investigated the properties of sintered body and the behaviors of isothermal phase transformation. The sintered bodies of Ca-TZP were shown the density of about 97% and the average mean tetragonal grain size of about $0.1~0.25{\mu}m$. Also, Ca-TZP specimen was more stable during aging at $250^{\circ}C$ than that of Y-TZP ceramics.

  • Effects of CuO addition on the sintering ability and the phase stability of Y-TZP. (Yttria doped Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals) were studied. The CuO dopants were found to be quite effective in reducing the sintering temperature to obtain full density and refining the grain size. The maximum allowable concentration of the dopants was limited to 0.3%mol% for CuO to maintain fully tetragonal phase. With the addition of these dopants, the flexual strength decreased by 20% in comparison with the undoped specimen but the fracture toughness increased by 15%.

  • Calcia stabilized zirconia polycrystal(Ca-TZP) powders were prepared by hydrothermal treatment at $200 ^{\circ}C$ in autoclave. Ca-TZP powders were shown the spherical shape with an average diameter of about 9-13 nm and specific surface area of>$112m^2/g$, and possessed weak agglomerates among the particles.
