  • The purpose of this study was to provide data for the basic research to found the effective conservation and management plan for the Hamyangsangrim designated as Natural Monument No. 154 and surround areas by analyzing the ecological characteristics such as landuse and actual vegetation, plant community structure, soil chemical property and also to identify the tendency of the ecosystem changes through comparison with past studies. According to analysis the results, the landuse and actual vegetation of survey site was classified as 8 types which were forest, artificial greenspace, plaza and open-space, bare ground and the pavement, water bodies, facilities, agricultural land and etc.. It was also categorized as 38 types according to detailed characteristic. 15 kinds of forest vegetation community types comprising silva were classified among them. The changes of actual vegetation showed little variation that the Quercus serrata-Carpinus tschonoskii forest was the most widely distributed in 2003(forest area ratio is 48.3%) and 2010(forest area ratio is 48.1%), whereas, the Quercus serrata forest declined a more dramatic from 11.6% to 23.2%. The Quercus serrata-Carpinus tschonoskii forest increased sharply(11.6% ${\rightarrow}$ 23.2%) and also the Quercus serrata-Zelkova serrata forest increased steadily(2.2% ${\rightarrow}$ 7.9%). The agricultural land around forest was transformed into artificial green zone. Moreover, water bodies, bare ground and the pavement of areas have increased. In addition, the urbanized area has decreased because the damaged areas inside forest have been restored to the woodlands. According to the result of typical 6 types vegetation communities change, the middle layer trees grew up to the canopy layer trees and was formed the canopy layer structure. The middle layer trees expanded their forces widely. Also new species appeared. And the shrub individuals also more dramatically increased due to the growth of shrubs. The force of Quercus serrata declined as well. However the force of Carpinus tschonoskii and Zelkova serrata expanded and increased in the forest. It must be the result of the ecological vegetation succession and environmentally soundly health recovery by influence of the projects of forest surrounding environment improvement and limitation of access to forest have managed and maintained since 2003. Those sorts of changes seems to be going to develop continuously. In the future Carpinus tschonoskii and Zelkova serrata will not be only codominant in the canopy layer but also Carpinus Tschonoskii, Zelkova serrata, Meliosma myriantha, Sapium japonicum. Styrax obassia and Acer pseudo-sieboldianum will be codominant in the middle layer. As a result, the forest's codominance species are going to be changed such like that.

  • Lonicera harae is a species of shrub in the Caprifoliaceae family, mostly distributed in East asia. So far, the related research on the genus of Lonicera is insufficient compared to the Lonicera japonica belonging to the same genus, which requires attention to domestic native plants. Therefore, this study aims to provide baseline data for cultivation and utilization through the growth environment and vegetation structure of the natural habitat. Lonicera harae, which plant found throughout the Korean Peninsula. The natural habitats of Lonicera harae is the forest, valley and lowland areas of the southern region. study examined 24 quadrats in 11 regions, including Gwangju, Wanju and Namhae. As a result, environmental condition of Lonicera harae was 8 to 483 m above sea level, normally distributed over 173 m, Slope was 5 to 25 degree with 8.5 degree on average. The list of plants were classified as a total of 229 taxa comprising 80 families, 166 genus, 198 species, 3 subspecies, 24 varieties, 4 forma. As a result of the clustering analysis, the three clusters were divided into three groups; Robinia pseudoacacia, Zelkova serrata, Larix kaempferi. Species diversity was 1.399 and Dominance and Evenness were found to be 0.978 and 0.022 respectively.

  • This study developed quantitative models to estimate the rainfall interception by seven native landscape tree species based on throughfall measurements. The tree species considered in this study were Abies holophylla, Acer palmatum, Ginkgo biloba, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Prunus yedoensis, and Zelkova serrata, which are frequently planted in the Korea. Among these species, 35.8% of the annual precipitation was intercepted by P. koraiensis, 34.1% by A. holophylla, 31.0% by Z. serrata, 27.6% by P. densiflora, 26.9% by G. biloba, 18.6% by A. palmatum, and 18.4% by P. yedoensis. All the quantitative models showed high fitness with r2 values of 0.90-0.99. The annual rainfall interception from a tree with DBH of 20 cm were greatest with Z. serrata (5.1 m3/yr), followed by P. koraiensis (4.1 m3/yr), A. holophylla (3.1 m3/yr), G. biloba (2.8 m3/yr), P. densiflora (2.1 m3/yr), P. yedoensis (1.9 m3/yr), and A. palmatum (1.8 m3/yr) in order. Thus, evergreen tree species or those with a relatively high crown density were more effective in intercepting rainfall. In particular, the annual rainfall interception by Z. serrata was the greatest because its crown area, volume, and density were higher than those of the other species. This study pioneers in quantifying annual rainfall interception for landscape tree species in Korea. The study results can be useful for evaluating rainfall interception by landscape trees in urban greenspace design for governments and corporations.

  • We investigated the effect of seedling age and planting density on early growth performance of Zelkova serrata trees. Containerized Z. serrata seedlings, 1-year-old and 2-year-old, were planted according to two different planting densities (3,000 and 5,000 trees ha-1) at the end of March, 2017. Three plots were established for each treatment (2 seedling ages × 2 planting densities). We calculated the survival rate (%) of out-planted seedlings as well as the stem volume based on the root collar diameter (RCD) and height (H) in September of each year, from 2017 to 2019. Seedling age and planting density did not affect survival rate of the out-planted trees. Planting density did not affect height of the trees, whereas the treatment significantly affected RCD and the H/D ratio for 2-year-old seedlings in 2019. The stem volume per tree was highest in the plot of 2-year-old seedlings at 5,000 trees ha-1 and lowest in the 1-year-old seedlings at 3,000 trees ha-1. In addition, the tree height in both 1-year-old and 2-year-old Z. serrata trees was greater in the 5,000 trees ha-1 plot than in the 3,000 trees ha-1 plot. There was no interactive effect between seedling age and planting density on stem volume; however, as seedling age and planting density increased, stem volume of Z. serrata trees increased. The values for stem volume per hectare are 85%, 68%, and 300% higher in 1-year-old 5,000 trees ha-1, 2-year-old 3,000 trees ha-1, and 2-year-old 5,000 trees ha-1 plots, respectively, compared to the values in 1-year-old 3,000 trees ha-1. This result shows that high planting density (close planting) affects tree growth differently based on seedling age, and suggests that the planting density of 5,000 trees ha-1 is suitable for 2-year-old seedlings to improve early growth field performance.
