  • Removal of spilled oil over the sea and the river has become one of the urgent problem in these days. Removing oil using mechanical devices are recommended because chemical dispersion can cause the secondary contamination in the environment. In the present study a series of experiments were carried out to study the effect of working conditions of a belt type skimmer on the rate of recovery for the spilled oil. The oil chosen for the present experiment was diesel oil. Three different situations, namely, upward, downward, up-and-downward pickup have been investigated for various contact angles, belt speeds and oil thicknesses. The results show that the rate of oil recovery for the case of downward pickup with a contact angle of 45.deg. shows the highest among all the conditions. For the removal of spilled diesel oil the optimal belt speed can be found as the critical value to reach the saturated pickup rate for a given oil thickness. The recovery rate of bunker C oil shows 4-6 times higher than that for diesel oil. And the optimal belt speed for bunker C oil can be found less than that for diesel oil for the same slick thickness.

  • When oil is spilled at sea, the oil boom is commonly used to tackle the movement and spreading of oil in an early stage of oil spill combat. But, the retaining capability of oil boom is affected by various factors, such as water velocity, viscosity, and density of oil, water depth, oil volume and the length of boom draft. In this study, computer modeling was peformed to investigate how these factors influence the oil retaining process. The Fluent, most popular one of many CFD(computational fluid dynamics) programs is chosen for modelling and modelling results were verified using the empirical data. It is expected that results of this study will be useful data for oil boom designer and oil spill response commander.

  • This paper presents an internal oil leakage detection problem for a hydraulic single-rod cylinder. We derive the dynamics of the hydraulic cylinder as a state space model, and then design a T—S fuzzy model-based fault detection observer. We adopt an H observer design scheme so that the observer is robust against disturbance and relatively sensitive to the leakage fault. Sufficient design conditions are derived in the form of linear matrix inequalities. A numerical example is provided to verify the proposed techniques.

  • KTX is being operated on Kyung-Pu High Speed Railroad Line and Ho-Nam Railroad Line from April 2004. Reduction units is occurring water infiltration at heavy snow and oil leakage because of labyrinth structure. This paper describes design method and evaluation technology to improve structure to prevent water infiltration and oil leakage for reduction units of KTX. This reduction units need high power and high speed to run and they have to make optimal lubricant without change current interface.

  • The Main Landing Gear(MLG) of Rotary Wing Aircraft is an essential equipment in Landing System for pilot to perform a flight mission. It supports the fuselage at ground and absorbs the impact from the ground when landing, thereby, these functions sustain operational capability for pilot and crew. However, the A aircraft caused asymmetry and leakage hydraulic when it was stationed on the ground. Therefore, this paper summarizes pilot comments in operation which are classified by cause of occurrence and the troubleshooting process about each comment. It also describes design improvements which was derived from troubleshooting and suggests verification results of flight test.

  • Increase of marine transpotation in coastal area frequently yields oil spill accidents due to collision or grounding of oil tankers, which affects great deal of damages on ocean environments. Exact prediction of oil pollution area in time domain, which is called oil map, is very important for effective and efficient oil recovery and minimization of environmental damage. The prediction is carried out by considering the two distinct processes which are initial diffusion on the still water surface and advection due to tide, wind wave induced surface currents. In the present paper, only the initial diffusion is dealt with. Somewhat new simulation model and its numerical scheme are proposed to predict it. Simple diffusion experiment is also carried out to check the validity of the present method. Furthermore, some example simulations are performed for virtual oil spill accident. Quite realistic oil map including oil thickness distributions can be obtained by the present model.

  • Track rollers are the key parts that support the weight applied to the caterpillar track of construction machinery. The operating conditions of construction machinery are harsh; hence, the track rollers exposed to these conditions can experience failures such as oil leakage and breakdown of the machine, because of impacts during driving. The failure of track-rollers has a major effect on the operation of the construction machinery. Therefore, each manufacturer tries to evaluate the performance of their products by conducting a self-test. However, only the vertical loads applied to the track rollers are considered in most of the self-tests. This method has the problem of ignoring the horizontal loads that are applied to the track rollers while rotary driving, and hence it does not create the practical operating condition of the construction machinery. In this study, we have determined the experimental conditions that effectively consider the magnitudes of the vertical and horizontal loads. The results of simulations and experiments conducted to assess the influence of horizontal loads on the failure of track rollers are presented in this paper.

  • To develop more robust oil boom which is vulnerable to various failure mode under severe weather condition, highly accurate wave model is developed using Spatially filtered Navier-Stokes Eq., LDS (Lagrangian Dynamic Smagorinsky model) for residual stresses, SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics). To clarify the hydraulic characteristics of floating type oil boom, we numerically simulate the behavior of oil spill around oil boom under very energetic progressive waves. At the first stage, we firmly anchored the oil boom, and then, allowed the excursion of the oil boom. It turns out that oil boom with skirt of enough length (longer than 30% of depth) effectively confines the oil spill even against very energetic waves. We can also observe obliquely descending vertical eddies between y = 1~2 m as horizontal vortices shedding at the interface of oil spill and water are diffused toward the bottom, which is believed to be the birth, growing and break-down of Kelvin-Helmholz wave.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on the oil leakage characteristics of stem seals depending on the driving distance in LPG vehicle. The increased speeds of the camshaft and oil temperatures do not affect to the oil leakage of the seals because of the low level of driving distances less than 40,000 km. But the increased driving distance over 50,000 km to 100,000 km shows a rapid deteriorating the sealing performance, which may increase the oil leakage through the rubbing surfaces between the poppet valves and stem seals. In this result, the stem seal may be exchanged about the driving distance of 50,000 km to 60,000 km with a currently used stem seal in LPG car. Thus, the stem seal for a poppet valve should be resigned for the increased durability and long life.

  • Oil spill over the sea and the river become a serious problem in these days. Two different approaches are used to clean up the spilled oil by means of chemical dispersion and mechanical devices. If it is possible, removing spilled oil using mechanical devices are highly desirable in order not to worry about the secondary contamination from chemical treatment. One of the major unsolved problems using mechanical devices has been the recovery of highly viscous oil spill. So, the systematic experimental data for treating very viscous oil are still wanting. In the present study a series of experiments were carried out to study the effect of the rotational direction of the belt skimmer on the rate of oil recovery using Bunker C oil. Three different situations, namely, upward, downward and up-and-downward pickup rate have been investigated for variable belt speed. The results showed that the rate of oil recovery for downward pickup was much higher than that for upward pickup. The major mechanism to recover the oil using a belt skimmer has been confirmed that oil sticks to the belt surface while moving to the water rather than moving upward. For the removal of spilled oil the optimal belt speed under the present experimental conditions was found to be about 200 ~ 270 mm/s just before the starvation started. The present experimental results would provide the basis for understanding the performance characteristics and physics of various types of skimmers.
