  • In this study, a lightning warning system (LWS) which can predict a lightning return stroke is developed, and the LWS is based on the measurement of electric field intensity at the ground level. The LWS consist of a rotation-type field mill as an electric field sensor, an impedance changer, a two-stage amplifier, and a microprocessor unit. From the calibration experiment, the frequency bandwidth and the maximum resolution of the LWS are $DC{\sim}200\;[Hz]$ and 73 [V/m], respectively. Also, the LWS can measure the electric field strength caused by a thunderstorm up to 18.7 [kV/m] at the ground. To ensure the sensing ability of the developed LWS in an actual situation, computer simulation using thundercloud models was carried out, and the result showed that the LWS can monitor the movement of thunderclouds within 6 [km] from the observation site.

  • Purpose : Catecholamines are the neuro-transmitters in the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and are activated by stress stimulus. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and Dopamine-${\beta}$-Hydroxylase (DBH) are very important enzymes in the catecholamine synthesis. Corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) is released in the process of reacting to stresses. The aim of this study is to find out what effects immobilization stresses have on the expression of TH, BDH and CRH mRNA in a rat's brains. Methods : We compare expression levels in rat's brains of TH, DBH and CRH mRNA induced by immobilization stresses between the test group and controled group. The expression levels of TH, DBH and CRH mRNA are measured by RT-PCR and the Western Blotting Analysis (WBA). Results : In brains and adrenal glands of the immobilization stress group, the expression levels of TH and DBH mRNAs are significantly two to three times higher (P<0.01), and CRH mRNAs are approximately one and a half times higher (P<0.05) than those of controlled group. Conclusion : This study suggest that the expression levels of TH, DBH and CRH mRNAs are activated by stress stimulus in a rat's brains and adrenal glands.

  • We reported two cases of amantadine treatment in traumatic brain injury patients and reviewed the literature of amantadine treatment of those patients. Problems with short-term memory, attention, planning, problem solving, impulsivity, disinhibition, poor motivation, and other behavioral and cognitive deficit could occur following traumatic brain injury or other types of acquired brain injury. This report described results of amantadine using in two patients with this type of symptom profile. Patients received neuropsychiatric examination as well as BPRS and Barthel index. These patients were improved, respectively from 57 point to 82 point(case 1), from 85 to 94(case 2) in Barthel index, and from 66 point to 35 point(case 1), from 55 to 32 point(case 2) in BPRS. These two patients did not reveal any other adverse effect. The rationale for using amantadine were discussed.

  • In this study, we measured the absorption coefficient of the tissues of mouse (brain, heart, liver, muscle and tumor) and human brain (normal and tumor) in the wavelength between 500nm~900nm. The optical coefficient is a representative of the characteristics of the materials. So, we can characterize the biological tissue with the optical coefficients. Using the spectrograph monometer and PDA(Photo Diode Array), we experimented with quick-frozen sectioned specimens. Because the optical coefficient is concerned with the conformation and biochemical component of the biological tissue, we experimented as the wavelength between 500nm~900nm on the normal and tumor samples of the animal and human. For the mouse, there are distinctive differences of the absorption coefficients between normal tissues and tumor. The absorption coefficient of the normal tissue varies 0.1~0.2cm$^{-1}$ with wavelength. But, the absorption coefficient of the brain tumor is changed round about 0.4~0.5cm$^{-1}$ as the wavelength. The absorption coefficients we measured can be a useful implement to detect diseases.

  • The objective of this study is to provide a Precise form of spatial normalization with affine transformation. The quantitative comparison of the brain architecture across different subjects requires a common coordinate system. For the common coordinate system, not only global brain but also a local region of interest should be spatially normalized. Registration using mutual information generally matches the whose brain well. However. a region of interest may not be normalized compared to the feature-based methods with the landmarks. The hybrid method of this Paper utilizes feature information of the local region as well as intensity similarity. Central gray nuclei of a brain including copus callosum, which is used for feature in Schizophrenia detection, is appropriately normalized by the hybrid method. In the results section. our method is compared with mutual information only method and Talairach mapping with schizophrenia Patients. and is shown how it accurately normalizes feature .

  • The AC power lines and signal lines of info-communication networks are muted on overhead poles and are exposed to lightning strikes. Due to the potential difference between groundings of the AC power lines and telecommunication lines, the electronic equipments connected to the telecommunication lines can easily be damaged by lightning surges. In this work, in order to develop the reliable ways to protect information and communication facilities from lightning surges, the reliability and performance of surge protective devices were experimentally investigated in actual-sized test circuit. The operation behaviors of surge protective devices against lightning surges from the AC power lines and telecommunication lines and the coordination effects of SPD installation method were evaluated. As a consequence, it was confirmed that the bypass arrester and common grounding system is very effective.

  • We evaluated the level of toxicity by LC50 and investigated the mechanism of brain impairment and GFAP expression by light and fluorescence microscopes in the pale chub, Zacco platypus, treated with fenvalerate. Survival rate was decreased according to the rise of fenvalerate concentration, and LC50 concentration was $27.79{\mu}g/L$. Apoptosis was increased according to the rise of fenvalerate concentration by TUNEL assay which determine apoptotic cell death population. Also, GFAP expression was increased in the periventricular zone. These results suggest that apoptosis might be a major mechanism to brain impairment of the pale chub by fenvalrerate. Increased GFAP expression in the periventricular zone would be an index of brain impairment. Taken together, this study might contribute to reveal the pathological mechanism of fish brain impairment by insecticide of pyrethroid, and to be an useful basic data for preservation of aquatic ecosystem.

  • Functional imaging based on the susceptibility only is achieved by separation of the susceptibility effect from the mixture of flow effect by use of a tailored RF pulse in conjunction with gradient echo sequence. Using the tailored RF pulse the susceptibility enhanced functional imaging appears to be explicitly related to the deoxygenation processes, while in the conventional gradient echo technique functional contrast on $T2^{*}$ effect images appear to be mixed with a significant fraction of blood flow (in- flow) signals of both arterial as well as venous bloods due to the nature of the fast sequence employed with the gradient echo technique. In this paper, using the tailored RF pulses, one can unambiguously separate the susceptibility and flow effects in functional imaging. Since the signal obtained can be made sufficiently high and represents oxygenation process more accurately, it seems possible to study quantitative oxygen metabolisms in brain function hitherto difficult to do with other gradient echo techniques.
