  • Diffusion tensor images were obtained to investigate the damage of brain white matter in non-smokers and an adequate drinking group (less than 10 points) selected by scores of the Korean versions of alcohol use disorders identification test questionnaire. Factional anisotropy (FA) values, according to the variables of age and body mass index (BMI), were not statistically significant in all regions of the brain white matter after measurement of factional anisotropy (FA) values by the tract-based spatial statics (TBSS) method. In other words, age and body mass index (BMI) do not significantly affect the microstructural changes of the brain white matter.

  • In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of community-based rehabilitation on patients with brain injury by ICF factor in previous studies and examine the application of recent community-based rehabilitation program. Total 15 articles that satisfied the selection criteria were divided by ICF factors to obtain the effect size. Homogeneity and publication bias were tested for those selected papers. As a result, the overall effect size of community-based rehabilitation was 0.22; the effect size by physical function and structure among the ICF factors came to be 0.21; and the effect size of activity and participation was 0.20, indicating a small effect size. The studies involved in a meta-analysis were considered as the absence of heterogeneity and publication bias, which indicates that the results of this study are subjectively reliable. These results well explained the level of change on ICF factors, especially physical function and structure, activity and participation, in other words, the intervention effect of community-based rehabilitation on patients with brain injury.

  • This paper describes a design of fast Fourier transform(FFT) processor for EEG(electroencephalogram) signal analysis for health care services. Hamming window function with 1/2 overlapping is adopted to perform short-time FFT(ST-FFT) of a long period EEG signal occurred in real-time. In order to analyze efficiently EEG signals which have frequency characteristics in the range of 0 Hz to 100 Hz, a 256-point FFT processor is designed, which is based on a single-memory bank architecture and the radix-4 algorithm. The designed FFT processor has been verified by FPGA implementation, and has high accuracy with arithmetic error less than 2%.

  • The EEG is a time series of electrical potentials representing the sum of a very large number of neuronal dendrite potentials in the brain. The collective dynamic behavior of neural mass of different brain structures can be assessed from EEG with depth electrodes measurements at regular time intervals. In recent years, the theory of nonlinear dynamics has developed methods for quantitative analysis of brain function. In this paper, we considered it is reasonable or not for ICA apply to EEG analysis. Then we applied ICA to EEG for big toe movement and separated the independent components for 15 samples. The strength of each independent component can be represented on the topological map. We represented ICA can be applied for time and spatial analysis of EEG.

  • Diffusion tensor images were obtained for middle-aged men according to the AUDIT-K scale. As a result of the fractional anisotropy (FA) value of the gyrus nerve fibers in the brain region measured and analyzed by the Tract-Based Spatial Statics, FA values of general drinkers were measured lower than those of estimated alcohol use disabled people. This was statistically significant. In other words, the use of alcohol significantly affects the anatomic microstructural changes measured in the Gyrus of the brain region, and it may damage the nerve fiber tract and affect the functional abnormalities associated with it.

  • Introduction : One of the important domains in OT is performance skills which include sensory perceptual skills, motor and praxis skills, emotional regulation skills, cognitive skills, and communication/social skills. All of these skills are support ed by integrated neurological processes. Body : Stereology robust tool when employed to investigate morphological changes in neurons, cortex area, and specific parts of brain involved in special brain function. Stereology is an interdisciplinary field focused or analyzing biological tissue with the three-dimensional interpretation of planer sections by using estimating method and mathematically unbiased sampling. With the unbiased stereological method based on probability theory, researchers can estimate morphological and anatomical changes in biological reference areas accurately and efficiently. Changes in anatomical and cytoarchitectural parameters, such as volume, number, and length, affect specific brain function related to the brain area. Occupational therapists provide treatment to improve functions for participation of occupation in neurological disorder. The functional improvements in neurological disorder reflect neurobiological changes because functional difficulties, such as motor cognitive disorder, are due to neurological disturbances. Thus, combination of two kinds of evidence, neurological changes and functional improvement, provide fundamental evidence for OT intervention in neurological disorder. Even though most of stereological studies are in animal model and in postmortem human because of practical and ethical issues, stereology provides fundamental knowledge to support OT theory and practice. Conclusion : Therefore, stereology informs translation from neuroscience to OT based on structure-function relationship in performance skills and experience-dependent neural plasticity.

  • Cri-du-chat syndrome is a rare genetic disorder in which the patient presents with a characteristic high-pitched monotonous cry and recurrent aspiration pneumonia, attributed to abnormalities in the larynx, epiglottis, and nervous system. The most prominent brain MRI findings are the presence of pontine and cerebellar hypoplasia, which primarily involve posterior cranial fossa structures. Although atrophy of supratentorial structures were also a common radiological finding, it was considered to be a secondary change due to pontine hypoplasia. Here, we present the case of a three-month-old patient presenting with cri-du-chat at our institution. The patient also showed the presence of prominent pontine hypoplasia similar to previously reported cases; however, contrary to other cases, there was a general delayed myelination of brain instead of decreased myelination of anterior limb of internal capsule. Since the larynx, pons, and cerebellum all originated from similar notochord level, which suggests anomaly in early stage of development, laryngeal, and brain anomaly characteristically observed in the cridu-chat syndrome.
