Treatment of Thickened Sewage Sludge by Using the Sea Waste Resource and the Radiation Technology (방사선과 폐수산자원을 이용한 하수 농축슬러지 처리에 관한 연구)

  • This study was focused on the treatment of thickened sewage sludge. General bacteria and E. coli were disinfected over 99% and organic compounds were decomposed after irradiation. It was suggested that this process can be an alternative for digestion Process. The moisture content in sludge was decreased over 10% (w/w) and the coagulation of sludge particles was enhanced by irradiation at the dose of 15 kGy and addition of sea waste resource (star-fish) as a dewatering aid.

  • The largest problem of domestic anaerobic digestion is low digestion efficiency. Reasons of the problem would be low organic matters input, low mixing efficiency in digestion tank, refractory excess sludge etc.. In this study, screw attached disk-type concentration system and a mechanical mixing system, solubilization facility improvements were performed to solve problems. Through these improvements, the sludge conc. of the concentrator increased 2.6-fold and the volume reduction efficiency was increased 3.0-fold. In addition, the dead-space is reduced by mechanical agitation. Anaerobic digester gas production in the digestion tank is increased from $193.8m^3$ to $386.0m^3$ per day. Digestion efficiency is improved to 54.6% from 47.6%. Digestion gas production is increased from $0.30Nm^3/kg$ VS to $0.42Nm^3/kg$ VS.

Quality of Ginger Powder as Affected by Concentration and Dehydration Methods of Ginger Extracts (농축 및 건조방법에 따른 생강 추출액 분말의 품질변화)

  • Reverse osmosis(RO) and rotary evaporation, freezer drying and spray drying as concentration and dehydration methods were, respectively, employed to investigate their effect on the flavor quality of ginger powder. Rotary evaporation and spray drying methods were more effective to restrict the browning of ginger powder than RO and freezer drying methods. Concentration methods had no effect on the free amino acids and free sugar contents of ginger powder, but freezer drying resulted in the less quality loss than spray drying. And the powder prepared from enzymatically hydrolyzed extract contained less crude protein, crude ash, browning and the changes in free amino acids, but had more the crude fat, solubility and free sugars than that from ginger extract obtained by filter press. Sensory results indicated that quality of ginger powder prepared by RO concentration and freeze drying of enzymatically hydrolyzed extract was as good as that without enzyme hydrolysis

The purpose of the sampling device is to concentrate large amount of samples and to improve return rate of samples.   • Performance of pilot plant scale extraction and concentration of purple-fleshed sweet potato anthocyanin pigment was tested and the characteristics of pigment extracts and concentrates were investigated. Fifty kilograms of purple-fleshed sweet potato was extracted with 500 L of 1% citric acid in 20% ethanol. As a whole, extraction pattern of the large scale extraction was similar to that of the laboratory scale extraction. The extracted pigment solution was filtered twice with a bag filter and a winding type microfilter and the filtrate was concentrated by a large scale vacuum evaporator at $40^{\circ}C$ and 600 mmHg vac. The mean values of total optical density (TOD) of the extract and the concentrate were 6.53 and 120.45, respectively. Browning index (BI) and Degradation index (DI) of extract were 5.86 and 1.55 and those of concentrate were 5.89 and 1.56, respectively, which indicated that the pigments were not changed or degraded through the extraction and concentration process.

Changes in Quality Characteristics of Garlic Jam during Storage (마늘 잼의 저장과정 중 성상변화)

  • In order to make a functional jam containing garlic, sugar, acid and pectin were mixed with garlic and concentrated by heating the mixture under atmosphere or vacuum conditions. And changes of some physico-chemical properties of the garlic jam(i.e., color, textural properties, vitamin C) were investigated during storage at $30^{\circ}C$. It was found that lightness(L) was higher in sample of vacuum concentration than that in atmosphere concentration and redness(a) and yellowness(b) were higher in sample of atmosphere concentration. During the storage lightness was found to decrease for all samples with more drastic decrease in sample of atmosphere concentration where browning was more severely observed after 8 weeks of storage. In terms of textural properties, hardness, chewiness and gumminess were higher in sample of atmosphere concentration than that in vacuum concentration. And springiness and cohesiveness were higher in sample of vacuum concentration. Although sensory score for garlic jam found to be lower than that for the existing strawberry jam, the present garlic jam might have high marketability if considering its physiological value.

  • This study examined the improvement of anaerobic digestion rate and sludge reduction as a result of the addition of anaerobic digestion with thickened sludge and solution of VFAs obtained from food waste. The methane production rate of the digestion system was 2.21 times higher when anaerobic digestion reactor injected into anaerobes with VFAs from food wastes of 5 percent. Also, The reduction of the amount of concentrated sludge injected will proceed rapidly because of the TCOD concentration in the digestion reactor was more than twice higher. Indirectly it was shown that the increased production system contributed significantly to the methane production efficiency.

  • Low pressure air flotation (LAF) pilot plant for sludge thickening was installed in Chung Nam N.S. municipal waste water treatment plant to verify its application possibility. Effects of operating conditions such as coagulant dosages and microbubble water ratio on thickening of the mixed sludge were examined. Microbubbles which were generated in the chamber of $1.5kgf/cm^2$ by high speed collision method with foaming agent were used to float sludge. Solid loading of $30kg/m^2/hr$, solid contents in thickened sludge of 60,300 mg/L and SS removal efficiency of 99% were obtained through long period operating LAF in conditions of mixed sludge concentration of 14,400 mg/L, coagulant dosage of 27.6 mg/L, foaming agent addition of 4.0 mg/L and microbubble water injection ratio of 9.7%.

Quality Characteristics and Antioxidant Activities of Rehmanniae radix Paste (지황 및 숙지황 농축 페이스트의 이화학적 품질 및 항산화 특성)

  • This study was investigated the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of the Rehmanniae radix (Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. var. purpurea Makino) paste (RRP) and Rehmanniae radix preparata extract (RRPP). RRP and RRPP were made from vacuum concentrates of hot water extracts. The sugar contents of RRP and RRPP were 65.3 and 72.0$^{\circ}Brix$, respectively, whereas the reducing sugar contents were 2.4% and 44.9%. The pH level was lowest in the RRPP. The DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of RRPP were much higher than those of RRP. Total phenol contents of RRP and RRPP were 2.15 mg/mL and 12.36 mg/mL, respectively. FRAP values of RRP and RRPP were 0.55 mg/mL and 2.02 mg/mL, respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that RRPP was the most appropriate in terms of both physicochemical and antioxidative activities.
