  • The lateral line scales of the Labridae fish are ellipse, pentagoanl, or hexagonal, but most of them are the hexagonal type. Those of Ciarrhilabrus temminckii, ellipse, Xyrichtys dea, Choerodon azurio, Semicossyphus reticulatus and Bodianus oxycephalus are pentagonal. The most complex species are Choerodon azurio which is pentagonal, but similar tohexagonal, and Pteragogus flagellifera which is hexagonal, but similar to pentagonal type. The sizes of sensory tubes for the Labroides dimidiatus and Cheilio inermis were larger than the other group and Xyrichtys dea had most narrow one. These varied sizes of sensory tube indicate that development of sensory tube is deeply connected with inhabitation.

  • Labrid fishes, Cheilio inermis and Labroides dimidiatus were collected around Cheju Island, between April-August, 1993, and described herewith as new to the Korean fish fauna. Labroides dimidiatus was originally described as Cossyphus dimidiatus by Cuvier and Valenciennes(1839), then reclassified as genus Labroides by Randall(1958). Underwater observations of Labroides dimidiatus have revealed the unusual food habit of removing ectoparasites from other fishes. Cheilio inermis was originally described by Forssk${\aa}$l(1775). It is distinguished from the other labrid fishes by the continuous lateral lines and elongated body form.

  • Karyotypic analysis was performed for Labridae fishes, Pseudolabrus japonicus, Halicho eres tenuispinis, H. poecilopterus and Pteragogus flagellifera from coastal area of Cheju Island in Korea. The chromosome numbers(Karyotypes) were 42(4M+24SM+14ST, A), 48(2M+2SM+44ST, A), 48(2M+46ST, A) and 42(4M+24SM+14ST, A) in P. japonicus, H. tenuispinis, H. poecilopterus and P. flagellifera, respectively. Heteromorphic sex chromosome was not found in both sexes of each Labridae fishes. However, large satellites were located on the largest subtelocentrics in P. japonicus and P. flagellifera.

  • The toxonomic revision of the suborder Labroidei was made based on the specimens collected from the coasts of Korean Peninsula from 1988 to 1996. The fishes of this suborder in Korea are composed 32 species belonging to 22 genera and five families of Pomacentridae, Cichlidae, Embiotocidae, Labridae, and Scaridae. And the keys to species, genera and families are provided with redescriptions and collection data. Among them the specimens of 21 species were collected and Ditrema viridis of family Embiotocidae was the first record from the coast of Wando-gun, Chollanam-do, Korea. Most species of the suborder Labroidei of Korea were mainly distributed in the coast of Cheju Island and South coast influenced by the warm Kuroshio Current.

  • Based on three specimens (50.6~67.7 mm SL) collected from the southern coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Oxycheilinus bimaculatus was described as the first record from Korea. They were characterized by having two small dark spots behind eye on head and body posterodorsally, a rhomboid caudal fin with elongated central rays and produced uppermost ray as a filament in terminal male, six predorsal scales, and two scale rows on cheek. We proposed a new Korean name, "Du-jeom-gin-ju-dung-i-nol-rae-gi", for the species referring to having two dark spots on head and body.

  • The single postlarval specimen (7.53 mm in standard length) of Thalassoma quinquevittatum (Lay & Bennett, 1839), belongs to the family Labridae, was collected by a bongo net from the southern coastal waters of Jeju-do Island, Korea in November 2020. T. quinquevittatum has a deeply curved dorsal contour before the dorsal fin, the oval eyes, and no melanophores throughout the body. While T. amblycephalum has a slightly curved dorsal contour before the center of the dorsal fin, the circular eyes, and few melanophores on the body. A molecular analysis based on 548 base pairs sequences in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region shows that the specimen was closely matched to adult T. quinquevittatum (K2P distance=0.002-0.005). We report the first record of T. quinquevittatum in Korean waters, and suggest its new Korean name "Da-seot-jul-saek-dong-nol-rae-gi".

  • Reproductive behavior of wrasse, Cheilinus bimaculatus, was studied in a shallow waters at Makurazaki in Kagoshima, southern Japan. Mating system of C. bimaculatus was haremic. Males established mating territory around the prominent rocks or a thicket of soft corals. Within the territory, there were two or three females. And pair-spawned with a female between 15:00 h~15:30. One spawning was performed within six seconds. The streaking, sneaking and group spawning were not observed in our observation.

  • We reviewed sex-change patterns in the wrasses Halichoeres poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, Pteragogus flagellifer, and Pseudolabrus sieboldi inhabiting the coastal waters of Jeju, Korea, based on the sex distribution according to standard length and sex characteristics of the gonads. Halichoeres poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, Pt. flagellifer, and Ps. sieboldi are protogynous hermaphroditic fish. Histological observations revealed that these wrasses are undelimited type 2 species because testicular tissue(spermatogenesis area) appears in most parts of the gonads during ovary of degenerative stage. Both initial- and terminal-phase males were present in the investigated populations, indicating that Halichoeres poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, and Ps. sieboldi are of the diandric type. In contrast, Pt. flagellifer is considered a monandric type, because all males in the investigated populations were terminal-phase males produced via sex change from functional females.

  • The fish fauna was investigated on summer (from July 28 to Aug. 2) and winter (December, 1994) at the Munsom in Cheju-do. As a result of this study, the fishes identified in these areas were classified into 79 species involved in 35 families. And seven species unrecorded in Korea were found, i.e. Halicampus boothae, Cirrhitichthys aprinus, Stegastus altus, Parupeneus sp., Pomacentrus sp., Pomacentrus sp., and Pomacentridae sp. In this region large number species of family Pomacentridae (12 species), family Labridae (9 species), Scorpaeinidae(6 species) and Blennidae (5 species) were observed in summer.

  • The author has collected as many as 35 species belonging to 25 genera in 18 families by trap net in the fishing ground of Chromis notatus along Seogwipo coast in Jeju-do. Among 35 species included are 6 species of Labridae, 4 species of Scorpaenidae, 3 species of Pomacentridae, and 3 species of Monacanthidae. In regard to the amount of catch, more than $90\%$ are Chromis natatus which are mainly caught within the depth of $15\~25m$, and the rest are largely Apogon semilineatus and those belonging to Labridae. ; Some ornamental fishes, subtropical fishes and some rare species are also collected.
