This study was conducted to evaluate the appropriate sowing method and mixture seeding rate on germination of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.). The experimental design includes two sowing methods and six mixed seeding per each method: BT1:BP0 (broadcast seeding; B, Trifolium repens; T, Poa pratensis; P), BT1:BP2, BT1:BP3, BT3:BT1, BT2:BP1, BT0:BP1 and ST1:SP0 (spot seeding; S), ST1:SP2, ST1:SP3, ST3:ST1, ST2:SP1, ST0:SP1. The germination was the highest for both species when the seeding rate was higher than other species. In overall, the germination of white clover was higher and faster than Kentucky bluegrass. Two plots, BT2:BP1, ST1:ST2, were retained the balanced proportion of the germination rate. Therefore, It was suggested, for maintaining the balanced field, it is better to seed white clover twice Kentucky bluegrass on broadcast seeding and Kentucky bluegrass twice white clover on spot seeding. In regard of sowing method, broadcast seeding is better than spot seeding in terms of increasing the germination. It is necessary to supplement the result for real application by long-term monitoring.

This study tested the antifungal compound obtained from a medicinal plant, Dioscorea quinqueloba Thunb., in order to search the possibility of practical application of this product in agriculture through evaluating its activity using the citrus fruits. The extract of D. quinqueloba Thunb., which has the strongest antifungal activity, was selected as a candidate among 101 plant extracts. Based on this examination concerning antifungal activity of the product on Penicillium digitatum in vitro, it was confirmed its effect of mycelial growth inhibition showed over 87% at 0.5 mg/ml concentration. This natural product showed the stability of the substance, as it was not significantly influenced by pH, temperature, or ultraviolet radiation. While citrus fruits were stored at room temperature, P. digitatum was inoculated into them in order to prepare a similar environmental conditions with epidemic occurrence of the mold. As the result of our investigation, the disease preventive effects of the active antifungal substance evidenced a 100% at 0.5 mg/ml. When the phytotoxicity of the selected natural product on citrus at 2 mg/ml was assessed, we noted no toxic effects. Based on the superior preventive effects from this natural product extracted from the plant, it is presumed to be very useful in agricultural applications for the control of green mold, P. digitatum, which has been occurred often the biggest problem in the storage of citrus fruits.
The composition of fatty acids, minerals, total dietary fiber and vitamin $B_1,\;B_2$, in pigmented rice varieties were determined. Proximate composition and color were also compared among pigmented rice varieties. Crude protein contents of black rice were higher than those of red and white rice, especially, C3GHi line had the highest protein content. There were no significant differences in lipid and crude ash contents between pigmented and white rice. Black rice showed lower Hunter value L and b value compared with red, green and white rice. But, Green rice showed lower Hunter value a compared with black rice. Green rice showed the higher contents in total dietary fiber, vitamin $B_1\;and\;B_2$ compared with white and black rice. The major fatty acids of pigmented rice were palmitic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. The contents of oleic acid was similar to that of linoleic acid in white rice. Oleic acid contents was lower than linoleic acid in black rice, but higher in red rice. Most mineral contents of pigmented rice except Fe, Zn and Mn were higher than those of white rice. Especially, Green rice had the highest mineral content.
To determine the critical level for optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves (KF118) at the stalk position from cutter to tips, the reflectance index using ground-based remote sensors and chlorophyll meter were investigated. The sensors estimated were Crop $Circle^{TM}$ (Holland Scientific), Green $Seeker^{TM}$ (Ntech Industries), Spectroradiometer (LICOR, LI-1800), Chlorophyll meter (SPAD502, Minolta), and Field $Scout^{TM}$ Chlorophyll meter (CM-1000, Spectrum). The L, a, b values and greenness for flue-cured leaf were measured and estimated for correlation with sensor's measurement of harvested leaf. On a reflectance curve of 340nm~1100 nm, the reflectance peaks on 550nm and 675 nm for the harvested leaf were lowered as change from light green to darker green. Darker green leaf harvested produced darker flue-cured leaf. The reflectance at 675 nm for flue-cured leaf decreased as greenness increased in the harvested leaf. This result means that the red edge band of 675 nm wavelength is related to the absorbance of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The greenness of flue-cured leaf showed significantly positive correlation with the entire reflectance indexes for harvested leaf while the L value by colorimeter showed negative correlation with greenness of cured leaf. The critical level for optimum maturity of harvested leaf were less than 22, 135, and 0.43 for SPAD reading, CM-1000 reading, and gNDVI by Crop $Circle^{TM}$, respectively. Consequently, ground-based remote sensing providing a non-destructive real-time assessment of plant greenness could be a useful tool in the selection of optimum maturity of flue-cured tobacco leaves in relation to high quality of flue-cured tobacco.

"Green King" is a new mini kiwifruit variety developed at the National Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (NISA), RDA in 2005, which was an edible fruit without peeling. This variety was selected from seeds obtained from the cross breeding between Actinidia chinensis cv. "Apple Sensation" and A. arguta in 1998. Seedling and line selections were conducted from 1999 to 2002, and characteristic trials were carried out from 2003 to 2004. The branch of "Green King" sprouts strongly and the color of leaf is slightly dark green. The shape of fruit is cylindric and the color of peel is green or yellowish green without hair. The average weight of fruit is 15.9 g. The core is small and soft, the pericarp is light green. Soluble solids concentration is $15.4^{\circ}Brix$. The fruit is sweet with slightly acid taste, containing total acid 1.3%, and the yield is higher over twice than that of A. arguta. The content of vitamin C is higher than that of A. arguta. The harvesting time is from middle October. This variety can be planted in the central and southern region of Korea.
A new sweetpotato variety, 'Daeyumi', was developed by Bioenergy Crop Research Center, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This variety was obtained from the cross between 'Jinhongmi' and 'Xusju 18' in 2000. The seedling and line selections were performed from 2001 to 2003, preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2004 to 2005, and the regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2006 to 2008. 'Daeyumi' has cordate leaf, green vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. This variety is also resistant to Fusarium wilt and nematode. The starch value was 25.9%, ethanol yield was 418 L/Ton, which was 7% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety, and the total sugar content was 2.47 g/100g, dry weight. 'Daeyumi's initial temperature of starch gelatinization was lower, 76.2$^{\circ}C$, and the retrogradation process was earlier than 'Yulmi'. The average yield of storage root was 27.8 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 36% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 3.0, and the average weight of one storage root was 152 gram. This variety can be used for the production of bioethanol and starch processing.
Recently an unknown microbial desease and some parasitic crustaceans are prevailing in the sea-weed farms of Uudaria pinnatifida along the south-eastern coast of Korea.(1) Green spots probably caused by the microbial pathogens were found on the fronds of Undaira Pinnatifide. Particularly they were densely distributed on the distal half of the fronds. The tissues of the green spot area rot off, and small holes with green colored margin are formed. The holes at the distal part of the fronds are enlarged and they finally coalesced each other. Then this process accelerates decaying of the distal ends of the fronds.. The fronds growing in the central part of the farms are usually severely damaged, whereas in the marginal area of the farm toward the open sea side the damage is less serious. An examination revealed that the deseased fronds bore a number of viable bacteria, $6.8\times10^5\;to\;1.2\times10^6$ per gram at $15^{\circ}C$, whereas the healthy fronds $1.1\times10^4$. Twenty-six kinds of colonies, 247 strains of bacteria, were isolated from deseased fronds, belonging to Moraxella, Achromobacter, Vibrio, Flavobacterium, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, etc. (2) Pinholes occurred in one series on the frond. They were probably caused by a harpacticoid copepod, Thalestris sp. Seven years ago when the disease was first found to occur the copepod was observed on the fronds from March of the year. Recently, however, they have been found as early as December of the previous year. (3) A gammarid amphipod, Ceinina iaponica, invades the pith of the midrib through holdfast of thalli. This rarely causes the longitudinal seperation of the entire frond through the midrib as they bore a tunnel in the pith. Sometimes holdfasts of tile heavy damaged thalli make the frond departed from the substrate.
To get basic data for quality grading of Mandarin oranges, the oranges were collected from five major areas distributed in Cheju Island, Korea for 3 years and the quality characteristics such as greenness, size, weight, uniformity, sweetness, pH and titratable acidity and its distributions were analyzed. The mean value of greenness (100- yellowness) of peel color in Mandarin oranges was 2.58% and its variation was very large, 9.04%. The average height and diameter of the oranges were 47.51 mm and 56.05 mm, respectively. The average weight was 82.24 g and its variation was 29.92g. The sweetness varied between 5.60$^{\circ}$Brix and 17.2$^{\circ}$Brix and its average value was 10.53$^{\circ}$Brix. The average values of the pH and total acidity of the oranges were 3.90 and 0.71 %, individually. In quality characteristics of Mandarin oranges according to the cultivated areas, area D had the lowest value in the strength of greenness, 1.14% and area D had the highest value, 3.53%. The highest values of the height and diameter in Mandarin oranges were 49.35mm and 57.48mm for area A and the lowest values of them were 46.35mm and 54.87mm for area E, respectively. The highest value of the weight in Mandarin oranges was 87.61 g for area A and the lowest value was 76.77g fer area E. Although the sweetness ranged from 10.2$^{\circ}$Brix for area E to 10.75$^{\circ}$Brix for area D, the difference by the areas was insignificant. For pH values, area B had the highest value, 3.96, while area E showed the lowest value, 3.78. Area A and E in titratable acidity were the areas shown the highest value, 0.75%, whereas area B marked the lowest value, 0.64%.
We conducted taxonomical investigations based on morphological characteristics, fruit morphology, and literature research on the tribe Potentilleae (Rosaceae) in Korea covering seven genera and 24 species. The style position on the ovary and the shape of style were useful characteristics for the classification of subtribal and generic levels in the tribe Potentilleae. The subtribe Fragariinae is characterized by subbasal or lateral style on the ovary and anthers with one theca. The subtribe Potentillinae has a subterminal style on the ovary, except for Argentina, which presents a subterminal and lateral style and anthers with two thecae. These results support the recent taxonomic recognition that i) the tribe Potentilleae consists of two subtribes, and ii) genera such as Dasiphora, Comarum, and Sibbaldianthe sometimes included in Potentilla s.l. are treated as independent genus. In the subtribe Potentillinae, Argentina, which has been treated as Potentilla, is supported as a distinct genus according to the characteristics of the subterminal and lateral style position and the ventral stipular auricles. In Fragaria, F. nipponica subsp. chejuensis, which has generally small leaves and a limited distribution only on Hallasan Mt., is supported by treatment as an endemic species. Duchesnea chrysantha is distinguished from D. indica by the characteristics of light green or yellowish green leaves, thin and somewhat membranous leaflets, and broad ovate or obovate leaflets. Each complex of P. dickinsii and P. chinensis remains unresolved with regard to controversy over the taxonomic circumscription due to their external morphological variations. Additional taxonomical research and molecular population studies are required for a more in-depth understanding of the tribe Potentilleae in Korea.

This experiment was conducted to breed a very early-maturing variety of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) at the Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA, Cheonan, Korea, from 2022 to 2023. The new variety, named "Earlybird," is a diploid variety characterized by green leaf color, a semi-erect growth habit in late autumn/fall, and an erect growth habit in early spring. With a heading date of April 30, Earlybird is categorized as a very early-maturing variety. Compared to the "Kowinearly" control variety, Earlybird's flag-leaf width is wider by 0.2 mm, its flag-leaf length is longer by 1.4 cm, and its plant height is greater by 10.5 cm. Additionally, Earlybird's ear length is 1.4 cm longer than Kowinearly's, and it exhibits lodging resistance. Although the dry matter yield of Earlybird (7,469 kg/ha) is smaller than that of Kowinearly, the difference is not statistically significant. The total digestible nutrient and crude protein content of Earlybird are 63.5% and 8.6%, respectively, which are higher than those of Kowinearly by 1.8% and 0.3%, respectively. The neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber content of Earlybird are 56.9% and 32.0%, respectively, which are lower than those of Kowinearly by 2.2% and 2.3%, respectively.
