  • The submersion and emersion patterns are key factors that directly influence the habitat environment of the coastal plants and animals. In this study, the coasts are divided into five zones (zones 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 - not flooded, flooded once, flooded and exposed to air twice, exposed to air once, continuously flooded in the day, respectively) based on the patterns using tidal elevation data at the major eight stations and the domestic and international reference tidal levels, i.e., AHHW, ALLW, HAT and LAT, are also estimated to analyse the characteristics of the five distinct zones. Based on the results, the frequency of the zone 3 are dominant and forms from 87.2% to 88.2% (nearly constant) irrelevant with the tidal ranges at all stations. The taking-up percentages of the zones 2 and 4 show nearly constant, below 4% and over 8%, respectively. In Pohang station classified as the mainly diurnal tide, the percentages are decreased to 1.4% in zone 2 and increased to 10.8% due to the effects of the annual and semi-annual tidal components.

  • Water temperature and salinity variation patterns were analysed using the CTD data measured in the Yeochari, Dongmakri and Donggeomdo intertidal zone, south of Ganghwado. Only the data during the submersion period of the measurement stations were used in this analysis. It is clearly shown that the correlation between air and water temperatures is very low and the water temperature variation shows clearly the opposite patterns as the tidal elevation increases and decreases. Whereas, the salinity change shows the similar pattern of the tidal elevation change pattern because the salinity change pattern could be described as the increasing function from the shoreline to offshore regions due to the continuous ground-water inflow in the adjacent watersheds. The salinity is increased from the submersion time to the high tide and decreased from the high tide to the exposure time.

  • A horizontal 2-D model which includes the wetting-drying treatment technique in the intertidal zone is established for the prediction of tidal changes and contaminant transport due to the development of Incheon coastal zone. The flow model is verified by the measurement data at Jeong-Do, and then the computed values are closely matched to the observed water elevations and velocities of main-flow direction. And then, the tidal change patterns are simulated using this model before and after the construction of the Youngjongdo New Airport and Shihwa Seadike. In the spring tide condition, pollutants transport pattern is also simulated for the arbitrary pollutants loads. By the analysis of this numerical simulation results, the velocities after development are decreased, and discharged pollutants are mainly transported by the advection along a narrow deep trough. Thus, this model can be used as the compatible prediction model for the tidal change and pollutant transport due to the development plan of Incheon coastal zone.

  • The critical low temperature of death under submerged soil was -5^\circ C for the underground tuber of Cyperus serotinus while the vegetative organ (tuber or bulb) of Sagittaria pygmaea and Potamogeton distinctus -6^\circ C, -7^\circ C respectively. On the critical high temperature of death in water bath with 45^\circ C. Potamogeton distinctus and Sagittaria pygmaea were 1 hour, 24 hours, but Cyperus serotinus did not die. When vegetative organs of perenivial weeds setted on the soil surface, the propagation organ of Potamegeton distinctus did not die by desication in 17% of soil moisture, but Cyperus serotinus and Sagittaria pygmaea were dead within 2 to 3 hours in 25^\circ C of soil moisture.

  • The intertidal flat depositional environment of Southern Nam Yang Bay, west coast of Korea has been studied to understand textural, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics. The intertidal flat environment can be divided into two subenvironments, that is, the mud flat and the sand flat due to the sediment textures. From thd outer sand flat to the inner mud flat the grain size of the sediments decreases and the mud content increases. It is suggested that the intertidal flat environment is in the progradation of marsh deposits in the mud flat. The chemical composition of the sediments is related to the sediment textures. The chemical index of maturity of the mud flat sediments is higher than that of the sand flat sediments. The clay minerals of the sediments are chlorite, illite, montmorillonite and kaolinite.

  • This in vitro study was undertaken to obtain optimal tetracycline concentration that aids proliferation and spreading of human periodontal ligament cells, for clinical application in root surfaces of periodontally diseased teeth. Periodontal ligament cells used in this study were obtained from explants of periodontal ligament of 1st premolar teeth which were extracted for the purpose of orthodontic treatment. The cells were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium(DMEM) supplemented with 100 U/ml penicillin, $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ streptomycin and 10% FBS at $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity, 5% $CO_2-95%$ air. Cells were used between the third to 4th passage. After root planing of periodontally extracted teeth, the root slabs were cut with carborundum disk. In the cell proliferation experiment, experimental groups were root planing only group, immersed groups in 25, 50, 75, 100, 150mg/ml aqueous solution of Tetracycline HCl followed by a vigorous rinse in PBS. Human PDL cells at concentration of $1{\times}10^5\;cells/ml$ were seeded in each culture well which contained root slabs and incubated for 6 hours. Then, all of the root slabs were moved into new 24 culture well and incubated 24, 48 and 72 hours. The cell counting was done by inverted phase contrast microscope after trypsinization. The following results were obtained. The cell number was increased in order root planing only group, 25, 150, 50, 75, 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated group in 24, 48 and 72 hours. The maximal cell number was obtained when the root slabs were immersed in solution with 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl. There were statistically significant between the root planing only group and 75, 100 mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated group in 24 hours, between the root planing only group and 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated group in 48 hours, between the root planing only group and 50, 75, 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated group, between 25 and 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated group in 72 hours(p<0.05). In the cell spreading experiment, after 30 minutes of incubated, in the root planing only group, the cells were generally round in shape. The cell surface was mostly covered with blebs. The cells started to attach to root surface by cytoplasmic extension in 50, 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated groups, more numerous cells attached to root surface than root planing only group. Many orifices of dentinal tubule were exposed, cells showed radially spreaded cytoplasm and unspreaded central region of the cell was covered with blebs. After 6 hours of incubation, in the root planing only group, cells showed radially spreaded cytoplasm and were attached flat appearance. In 50, 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated groups, cellular margin was concaved and cytoplasm showed elongated appearance with polarity. After 24 hours of incubation, in the root planing group, cells showed characteristic polarity. In 50, 100mg/ml of Tetracycline HCl treated groups, cells showed more elongated and spindle - like appearance.
