  • The objective of this study was to investigate suitable plantation site for planted Chamaecyparis obtusa seedlings from the analysis of regional early growth performances. Two years old C. obtusa seedlings were planted with the density of $3,900seedlings{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in late March, 2011 at Haeman and Jangseong, Jeollanamdo. In each study site, three plots ($400m^2$ per plot) were established and root collar diameter (mm) and tree height (cm) of each C. obtusa were measured in April, 2011 and October from 2011 to 2013. We also analyzed soil physical and chemical properties of sites and compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa. Although the concentrations of soil nitrogen, organic matter, and C.E.C. at Haenam site were higher than those at Jangseong site, early growth performances of planted C. obtusa at Jangseong site were significantly better than those at Haenam site. The reasons for these results were probably related to deep available soil depth at Jangseong site and relatively low annual precipitation and sea wind at Haenam site, which was adjacent to the sea. The compartmental nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of C. obtusa was in the order of needles > current twigs > fine root > stem and branches root above 2 mm in diameter. The phosphorus concentration of needles at Haenam site was significantly higher than that at Jangseong site. The results of this study might be useful for the selection of suitable plantation site for C. obtusa.

  • Six commercial rootstock varieties were tested for resistance to bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) by dipping the roots of seedlings in the bacterial suspension at seedling stage. 'Shincheonggang' and 'B-Blocking' ranked top and second in resistance to bacterial wilt, respectively. For disease index of the grafted plants, 'Dotaerang' grafted onto 'Shincheonggang' was the least, followed by 'Ultra', 'Fighting', 'B-Blocking', 'Special', and 'Connection' grafts. Thus, disease development on the grafted plants was correlated with resistance of rootstocks. The effect of rootstocks on horticultural characteristics including days to flower of scion was minimum or negligible. In correlation between horticultural characteristics of rootstocks and scions grafted thereon, statistically significant negative correlation was observed in days to flower and fruit height but no significant correlation was observed in yield per plant, fruit diameter and soluble solid content in the fruits. Thus, selection of resistant rootstock varieties that support the growth and yield of scion well is necessary for effective control of the disease and yield increase.

  • This study was conducted to produce heads of artichoke in July in Korea. The artichoke was planted in the Autumn and it could be reaped heads of artichokes in late of May in Korea. It can inform us that the artichoke need under some low temperature during the Winter to open flowers. In order to harvest heads of artichoke in the Summer two kinds of cultivar 'Green Globe' and 'Imperial Star' those were grown for 4 weeks in green house of $17^{\circ}C$ which were treated at 3, 6, 9 and $12^{\circ}C$ chamber for 4 weeks and then planted the 8th April. Plant distance was $150{\times}50$ cm. After 3 months most of artichoke of 'Imperial Star (IS)' made heads. Especially, the artichokes 'IS' were treated at $6^{\circ}C$ made heads 63% of plants but those at $12^{\circ}C$ made heads 33% and the artichokes (no treatment at low temperature) grown in greenhouse at $17^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks made heads 5% of plants. 'Green Globe (GG)' made heads 28% of plants at $9^{\circ}C$ and 10% at $12^{\circ}C$, and 'GG' grown in greenhouse at $17^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks never had made any head. The weights of head were 97 g and 86 g in 'IS' and 'GG' respectively. The yield of heads were 215 and 108 kg/10a in 'IS' and 'GG' respectively.

  • Fruit cracking and vine leaf spot of grapes tend to occur when the plants were directly exposed to rain under outdoor culture. Rain shelter facility can be an alternative method to prevent the cracking and disease of grape, but it also has some limitations in practical usages. We designed rain shelter facility which can completely shut out the rain and ventilate naturally, and it was upgraded to meet the standards of disaster prevention against snow and wind load. The newly developed rain shelter has two-story roof structure, and the $2^{nd}$ floor roof was equipped over $1^{st}$ floor roof at a distance of 40cm. For natural ventilation and water proof, the upper roof protruded about 50cm from the ridge of a $1^{st}$ floor roof. The various tests were carried to examine such as grape quality, brown spot and fruit cracking of Campbell Early under the conventional and the newly developed rain shelter facility which was built about $100{\ss}{\check{S}}$. In comparison of temperature between the conventional and the newly developed rain shelter facility when outside temperature was more than $34^{\circ}C$, the inside temperature was recorded as $40.7^{\circ}C$ and $37.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two facilities when outside was below $32^{\circ}C$ The quality such as soluble solids and marketable fruit was increased, and fruit cracking of grapes and vine leaf spot also drastically diminished in the newly developed rain shelter.

  • The study was compared for growth and yield of cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme) crops as affected by various homemade liquid fertilizer (LF), commonly applied in the environmentally friendly farmhouses. LF treatment included UT (untreatment, water), OC (oil cake), BF (bone+fish meal), FA (fish amino meal), SO (sesame oil meal), and SF (starfish). Seasonal pH and EC in SO- and SF-LF rapidly decreased at 30 days after the storage, which were the highest EC of 0.6 - 0.8 dS/m, followed by BF-LF with 0.4 dS/m EC. T-N concentration in LF was the highest on the SF (0.0062%), followed by SO (0.0059%) and BF materials (0.0030%), which were all the great for the K concentration in the LF. P and Ca concentrations were the highest on the FA-LF, with the highest Mg concentration observed on the vegetable SO-LF. Soil EC was the highest on the SF-LF plots of 0.74 dS/m, with no significant differences between the treatments observed on the macro-nutrient concentrations in the soil and leaf. Leaf dry weight, leaf temperature, stem diameter, and plant height were investigated at once per 15 days. UT-LF reduced the leaf dry weight at all the measurement time while the plant height was low at an initial measurement but increased and similar to the other homemade LF treatments at a later measurement. Fruit yield and average fruit weight were the lowest on the UT-LF plots at 75 days after fertigation. Fruit diameter was increased by the BF-LF and SF-LF, with the highest fruit soluble solid contents and fruit coloring observed on the FA-LF. BF-LF maintained high fruit firmness.

  • This study was carried out to induce plant regeneration via shoot formation from sucker explants of Rubus fruticosus L. To induce adventitious shoots, sucker explants were sterilized in $1.2\%$ NaOCl solution, and cultured on the MS solid medium supplemented with kinetin (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mg/L) and BA (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mg/L), respectively. As above, to induce adventitious shoots, sucker explants were cultured on the MS solid medium supplemented with IBA (0, 0.1, 1.0 mg/L) and BA (0, 0.1, 1.0, 2.0 mg/L). After 4 weeks of culture, the highest frquency $(100\%)$ of shoot formation from sucker explants was obtained from the medium with 1.0 mg/L BA. The highest shoot number per explant from in vitro shoot explants was 5.3. After 10 weeks of culture, the number of shoot per explant was increased. The highest frequency $(85\%)$ of root formation was obtained at 0.5 mg/L glycine medium, when the explant with shoot were cultured on the MS medium containing glycine at various concentrations from 0 to 2.0 mg/L. The survival rate of the plantlets after transfer to plastic pots containing sand, soil, and vermiculite (1:1:1, vol.) was $95\%$. The results indicate that micropropagation procedure can be applied for an efficient mass propagation of Rubus fruticosus.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of effective microorganisms (EM) on growth, yield and fruit nutrient contents of two cultivars ('Muhanjilju' and 'Daetong') of hot pepper. The number of injection of EM cultivated are 6 times from the pepper plant seedlings until harvested in both cultivars. Stem girth was highest in the treatment of Lactobacillus plantarum whereas lowest in no EM control. In 'Muhanjilju', the number of branches was highest (79.3) in the treatment of Bacillus subtilis whereas in 'Daetong' was highest (119.0) as treated with Lactobacillus plantarum. Yield of the red hot pepper fruits that sum of two varieties was highest in the treatment of Rhodopseudomonas capsulatas (53.1kg FW per 10a). Regardless of EM treatments, average yield was 8% higher in 'Daetong' than is 'Muhanjilju' (33.8kg vs 31.2kg per 10a). The incidence of antracnose was lowest by the Rhodopseudomonas capsulatas treatment, which led to the highest yield. As for the effect on fruit mineral nutrients, total N and phosphorus concentrations were highest in the treatment of Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis in both varieties, respectively. The highest content of total carotenoids was obtained from the treatment of Lactobacillus plantarum in both varieties.

  • This experiment was to determine the effects of soil pH on crude components and aromatic constituents of Codonopsis lanceolata. Vine length of Codonopsis lanceolata grown at soil pH of 6.5 was longer(299cm) compared to that grown under other soil pHs. Fresh root weight increased at soil pH of 5.5 and 6.5, showing 17.9 and 15.6g per plant, respectively. Contents of crude components such as protein, fat, fiber, and ash decreased as soil became alkalized and crude ash content ranged from 2.99% to 3.85 %, showing a similar response to soil pH. Forty-eight volatile aromatic compounds in the root of Codonopsis lanceolata were identified by GC/MS. Major aromatic compounds were 1-hexanol, cis-3-hexanol, and trans-2-hexanol. In particular, trans-2-hexanol was highest in soil pH of 6.5, attaining the 156.87% area. Essential oil content was also highest at soil pH of 6.5 with 0.007%. As a result, it was considered that the soil pH of 6.5 was most effective for the improvement of essential oil and aromatic constituents in the roots of Condonopsis lanceolata Trautv.

  • In order to evaluate the utility of the bituminous coal fly ash, gypsum, oyster shell as soil amendments, acid sandy loam soil with low boron content were amended in the upper 15cm with amendments, and then chinese cabbage was cultivated in fall. Amendments treated were, in metric tons per hectare, i ) none(Check) ; ii) 80 fly ash(FA) ; iii) 4shell(SH) ; iv) 56 fly ash+24gypsum (FG) ; v) 40 fiy ash + 24 gypsum +0.8 shell(FGS). On the whole, amendments imoroved soil chemical properties and contents of N, P, K, Ca, and B in leaves. Among treatmens, FA prominently neutralized soil pH and increased available $P_2O_5$ ,B but decreased Fe contents in soils. FGS also affected the increment of exchangeable Ca, Mg, and available B. Yield response in fresh weight of chinese cabbage was in order of 85% for FGS>77% for FG>66% FA>5% for SH plants. Reducing sugar and vitamin-C contents of leaves depending on treatments showed the same tendencies as that in yields, whereas crude fiber opposite to theme. In particular, FA, FG, and FGS plants showed normal growth without boron deficiency symotoms which appeared in Check and SH plants.Taken together, FGS was an effective combination enable to maximize the utility of fly ash, gypsum, and shell as soil amemdments, especially in cabbage yield and quality.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum intensity of root pruning and the initial seedling size of 1-year-old Quercus serrata for producing 2-year-old healthy seedlings. Large( > 26 cm hight) and small size ( < 24 cm hight) seedlings were pruned their root by the length of 5, 10, and 15cm and then transplanted on nursery. Stem height, root-collar diameter(RCD), height to RCD ratio(H/D ratio), shoot dry weight(DW) and root development were measured during first growing season after transplanting. Seedling size and pruning intensity influenced on shoot growth such as height, RCD, H/D ratio and DW after transplanting. In addition, the development of lateral roots such as number, length, DW and diameter were affected by the seedling size. Taproot pruned by 15cm was shown excellent above-ground growth in large seedling group, but pruned by 10 and 15cm showed respectively better shoot growth in small seedling group. Large seedlings increased their above-ground growth, taproot regrowth, and number of lateral roots more than those of the small seedlings. But the length and DW of lateral roots were increased in the small seedlings. In conclusion, in order to produce high quality 2-year-old seedlings, it is important to produce large size of Q. serrata seedlings. Also root pruning length of 1-year-old Q. serrata was reasonable on 15 cm in taller than 26 cm or 10cm in less than the height.
