The objectives of this study were to characterize the health status, the requirement of home nursing care, and dependency of daily life of the elderly so that the result could be used to provide basic data necessary for establishing home nursing care practices. The study subjects were 249 elders over 65 years old who resided at home in low income areas of three districts in Pusan. The field survey was conducted from December 27, 1993 through January 27, 1994, with a structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis was done by X²-test and Student's T-test using SPSS/PC/sup +/ program. The result were as follows; 1. Alcohol drinking rate was 50.0% for men and 27.7% for women, and cigarette smoking rate was 77.8% for men and 27.1% for women. 92.9% of elders aged 65-75 exercised regularly as compared to 81.9% of elders aged 75 and over(p<0.05). 2. 63.9% of male and 85.9% of female elders had chronic diseases showing singnificant differences(p<0.01), and both sexes had 1.7 kinds of chronic diseases in average; musculoskeletal diseases were the most common in 25.7%, while 6.8% of the elderly had cardiovascular diseases. 3. Partially movable elderly was 6.9% for men and 6.8% for woman, showing 47.1% of causes being cerebrovascular accidents. 4. The home nursing requirement was the highest for medication(66.3%), intramuscular injection(53.8%), and measurement of blood pressure·body·temperature·pulse rate(47.0%). 5. Among Physical Activities of Daily Life, bathing(10.4%) and movement(4.0%) showed high dependency rates, and among Instrumental Activities of Daily Life, phone calling(25.3%), shopping(24.5%), going out by bus(22.5%) showed high dependency rates. 6. For five categories of home nursing showing high requirements such as physical health examination, blood pressure·temperature·pulas rate measurements, medication, and intravascular injection, the requirements were different by age groups, education, and marital status(p<0.05).
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of a senior functional game (Rejuvenescent village) on cognitive function, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), depression, and life satisfaction in Korea. Methods: An one-group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Data were collected twice (at the beginning and the end) from 100 elderly adults in S city who played "Rejuvenescent village" 8 times (twice per week, one hour per session) for a month. Also they completed questionnaires on their cognitive function, IADL, depression, life satisfaction, and general characteristics. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 programs. Results: The mean age was 70.06(${\pm}3.77$) years, with a range of 65-80 years old. Among 100 subjects, 21% were male and 85% were young old. There were statistically significant differences in cognitive function (t=-3.32, p=.001), IADL (t=1.98, p=.049), and life satisfaction (t=-2.15, p=.034). Although there was no statistically significant difference in mean depression score (t=1.06, p=.292), categorized depression was statistically significant (${\chi}^2=62.97$, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings in this study show that the serious game (Rejuvenescent village) was effective for older Koreans' cognitive function, IADL, depression, and life satisfaction. Thus, we need to consider senior functional games to get health benefits by making elderly adults active with enjoyment.
The purpose of this study is to grasp the inconvenience and problems with caregivers' uniforms and preferred designs by examining the wearing conditions of these uniforms in medical welfare facilities for the aged. To attain this purpose, a questionnaire was completed by direct observation and by interviewing caregivers in specialized hospitals for the aged and those engaged in nursing and then a preliminary examination was carried out. The questionnaire was given to 228 caregivers. Following are the results of this research. It was found that the caregivers in medical welfare facilities for the aged were women in their 50s, wearing primarily a size 77 uniform. It was revealed that when the caregivers bathe patients, they usually get wet from the knees to the bottom part of their pants and many of them (61.2%) change both their tops and pants after giving a bath. The caregivers said that every part of the tops of existing uniforms, except the armpits, were a little large or too long. It turned out that the area of the armpits, the front buttons, crotch, hip area, and knees are mostly the areas that readily wear out in the uniforms. It was reported that the uncomfortable parts in the uniforms a.e the armpits, shoulders, and the front adjusting parts of the tops and the hips, thighs, and the crotches of the pants. The material for the uniforms have problems in ventilation, fluffing, absorption of sweat, and permeation of odor.

This study aims at developing dialog system to improve the quality of life of the elderly with a dementia. The proposed system mainly consists of three modules including speech recognition, automatic search of the time-sorted dialog database, and agreeable responses with the recorded voices of caregivers. For the first step, the dialog that dementia patients often utter at a nursing home is first investigated. Next, the system is organized to recognize the utterances in order to meet their requests or demands. The system is then responded with recorded voices of professional caregivers. For evaluation of the system, the comparison study was carried out when the system was introduced or not, respectively. The occupational therapists then evaluated a male subjects reaction to the system by photographing his behaviors. The evaluation results showed that the dialog system was more responsive in catering to the needs of dementia patient than professional caregivers. Moreover, the proposed system led the patient to talk more than caregivers did in mutual communication.

Purpose: This study aimed to suggest strategies for advancing local-government-based accreditation systems and surveyor training in long-term care facilities in Korea. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature including research papers and official reports issued by governments from the United States, Australia, and Japan was conducted to explore domestic and international policies related to long-term care facility certification and accreditation systems. Results: The USA has two types of care quality assurance systems including mandatory certification (5-star rating system) by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and voluntary accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Australia operates a government-based mandatory accreditation system for all long-term care facilities through the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency. Japan, particularly the Tokyo district, operates a third-party evaluation system that involves the voluntary participation of long-term care facilities. Conclusion: This study provides several strategies to enhance accreditation processes and surveyors'expertise. For instance, motivating facilities to voluntarily participate in accreditation is necessary by 1) providing sufficient and continuous consultations and feedback about how to improve care quality, 2) differentiating accreditation domains and indicators from the national health insurance certification system, and 3) actively utilizing accreditation results and providing incentives.

This study examined the effects of favorite music therapy on the anxiety and vital signs at each point in gynecologic surgery using the general anesthesia. The research design was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from May 1 to July 30, 2013 and the participants were 44 patients (experimental group, 21, control group, 23) received music therapy while waiting for anesthetic induction and PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit). Repeated measures ANOVA was performed to analyze the data by SPSS 18.0. Music therapy reduced the anxiety level at inducing the anesthetic time, and awakening time (p=.003; p=.011). The systolic blood pressure maintained stability at discharge from the PACU (p=.023), and pulse rate was stable at the awakening time (p=.016). This findings support the use of music as a nursing intervention to reduce anxiety and maintain the vital signs for gynecologic surgery patients under general anesthesia.
This study is a descriptive study to understand the effect on the health behavior compliance of men who got coronary intervention, focusing on the elapsed period. The subjects of this study were 249 men who underwent coronary intervention at a university hospital, and the collected data were analyzed using Stepwise multiple regression. As a result of the study, the influencing factors the implementation of healthy behaviors were self-regulation(β=0.35, p<.001), risk factors among educational request(β=-0.26, p<.001), and the elapsed period(β=0.19, p<.001), marital status(β=0.15, p=.001), educational level(β=-0.12, p=.035), and the total explanatory power was 29.1%. IIn order to increase the health behavior performance of male patients who underwent coronary intervention, it is necessary to develop a program that can strengthen the autonomous motivation of subjects with high severity and elapsed time of less than 1 year and more than 1 year.
Purpose: This study provides information for the development of educational programs for improving awareness of support to the elderly among adolescents. Methods: The 350 students of high schools located in Seoul were selected as subjects and surveyed using structured questionnaires during 11th~15th of April in 2014. The 327 subjects were used for analysis and the response rate was 93.4%. SPSS/WIN18.0 program was performed for t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: First, adolescents with parents aged over 50 compared to those with parents younger than 40 showed high level of awareness of support to the elderly. The high level of cognitive factors including image and perception towards the elderly (t=3.07, p=.01) were significant factors of awareness of support to the elderly. In experiential factors, adolescents with extensive influence of media and experiences with cohabitation with grandparents, and experiences with voluntary service activities were statistically significant with the high level of awareness of support to the elderly. Second, in regression analysis, adolescents' economic support awareness was higher with the stronger influence in the elderly-related media (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). The emotional support awareness was higher among the eldest sons (${\beta}=.220$, p=.017) and perception (${\beta}=.352$, p=.001) to elderly (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). Physical support awareness was higher when the positive image for the elderly (${\beta}=.223$, p=.016) and the high perception towards the elderly (${\beta}=.293$, p=.007). Conclusion: The awareness of support to the elderly should be constantly strengthened to the adolescents. Despite the rapid increase of the elderly, studies are not sufficient. Further research will be necessary.
