The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-week elastic band exercise on body composition, blood lipids and AMPK in 24 elderly female volunteers aged 65-75 years, and they were divided into the combined exercise group(n=12) and the control group(n=12). The elastic band exercise method was to do exercise 3 times a week for 60 minutes per session, 1-4 weeks for low intensity of OMNI-RES 3-4, 5-8 weeks for medium intensity of OMNI-RES 5-6, 9-12 weeks for OMNI-RES 7-8 of high intensity. In order to compare the differences in the groups before and after the elastic band exercise, two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to verify the interaction between group and time. The difference in the groups of the measured data was paired t-test, the difference between the groups was paired independent t-test, and analysis of covariance ANCOVA was performed to minimize the inter-group error. The statistical significance level of each item was set to .05. As a result, body fat percentage of exercise group significantly decreased (p<.05), and skeletal muscle volume was significantly increased (p<.01). TC, TG and LDL-C were not significantly different between the exercise and control groups, and HDL-C was significantly decreased in the control group (p<.05). AMPK was significantly decreased in the exercise group (p<.001), but there was no significant difference in the control group. According to the covariance analysis to minimize the error of difference between the pre-exercise groups (p<.05), there was significant difference in AMPK of groups after exercise. These results suggest that the 12-week elastic band exercise has a positive effect on the body composition and AMPK of the elderly women.

Previous epidemiological studies reported that significant muscle loss is observed with advancing aging, called sarcopenia. This study is to investigate the effects of treatment dumbbell exercise on prevention of sarcopenia. The subjects were elderly between 60~70 years old who participated in J-Welfare senior center exercise program at J-gu in S-city and divided into control group(N=19) and exercise group(N=8). Treatment dumbbell exercise was performed 2 times per week for 12 weeks and body composition, fitness, and blood lipid profiles were measured before and after this program. There was no significance in body fat before and after 12 weeks of treatment dumbbell exercise, but there was significance in weight(F=4.312, p=0.048), BMI(F=4.532, p=0.043), and FFM(F=4.743, p=0.039). There was no significance in fitness such as arm curl(F=1.103, p=0.304), and back scratch(F=0.214, p=0.648), but there was significance in 2-minute step(F=33.638, p<0.001), chair stand(F=14.575, p=0.001), chair sit and reach(F=7.198, p=0.013), and 8-ft up and go(F=14.890, p=0.001). The variables of blood lipid profiles such as TC(F=0.030, p=0.864), TG(F=0.142, p=0.710), HDL(F=2.066, p=0.163), glucose (F=0.125, p=0.727), and HbA1c(F=0.945, p=0.340) has no significance. It was found that treatment dumbbell exercise has positive effects on body composition and fitness but has no positive effects on blood lipid profiles of the elderly.

Falls are a threat to the physical health of the elderly as well as to their overall quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identify which type of exercise is effective for improving the balance of the elderly, and to obtain the basic data for developing the falls prevention exercise intervention program for the elderly. We compared to the differential effects between rhythmic step exercise and core muscle strengthening exercise in terms of functional balance test and self-reported balance test. Women older than 65 years and under 80 years of age were assigned to one of the step exercise group(21), core muscle exercise group(20), and control group(21), and for 8 weeks, twice per week, 20-30 minutes of exercise were treated. All participants performed one foot static balance test with open and closed eyes. And they responded to self-reported balance test, such as Fall Efficacy Scale(FES) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence(ABC) Scale. The results of statistical analysis are summarized as follows. First, rhythmic stepping exercise was more effective in improving functional balance than core muscle strengthening exercise. In particular, the effect of step exercise was obvious in the one-foot static balance test with open eyes. Second, the self-reported balance test showed better step exercise than core muscle exercise. Specifically, rhythmic step exercise was more effective in enhancing fall efficacy than core muscle exercise. In conclusion, the rhythmic step exercise was more effective in improving the balance ability of the elderly than the core muscle exercise. The rhythmic step exercise is more related to the lower extremity muscles, and especially since the rhythmic step exercise is performed in various ground changes, it seems to have a high similarity to the fall occurrence situation. For future research, we recommended the development of task-oriented ankle proprioceptive exercise intervention program and exercise equipment based on the specific motion situation in which the fall accident occurs in the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of utilization level and to propose the improvement related in obtaining qualification for senior sports instructors. The population of this study was participants who took the course of the general course and special course Training Program for Sports Instructors for senior in JeollaNam-do from 2015 to 2017. A total of 113 of them answered the survey. The data process of this study was used by the IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 program, and frequency analysis was conducted. The results of this study are follows. First, What was your situation when they took the qualifications program of sports instructor for senior, the largest number of answer were 'working in the sports field'. Most respondents answered that the reason for acquisition was to have various abilities. Second, The qualification of sports instructor for senior helped person get a job but did not help with promotions or wage increases. the largest number of answer to the reason were'the lack of benefits from qualification'. At the national level, the system of sport instructor qualification for senior must be an important system for preparing for future social problems and maintaining a healthy society. In order to be effective, however, the training program should be strengthened for the senior and provide professional experiences.

The purpose of this study is to find out whether the environment is based on the Color Universal Design (CUD, CUD Recommended Color Set Guidebook), which is located in the area with the highest proportion of elderly people in the city of Busan in Korea. Five nearby parks in the walking district of Busan were selected to measure the environmental color with a spectrophotometer(Minolta CM-2600d) and web color search. The range of the color survey was limited to the pavement; public facilities(sign, benches, restroom), and exercise&sports facilities. The results of the study are as follows. Overall, the Y color group was dominant, with similar color usage and intensity, and similar levels of saturation. This was analyzed based on the Color Universal Design theory, suggesting that the visual characteristics of the elderly were not taken into account, and the Neighborhood Park located in Busan was found to lack the environmental color of consideration for the visual characteristics. In addition, this study could act as a basic study that can be applied to social and environmental colors that reflect the color perception and cognitive characteristics of the elderly.
The aim of this study was to examine the structural relationship between leisure function, self-efficacy and quality of life among elderly participating in leisure sports. To achieve the purpose of this study, a total 222 surveys gathered from indoor, outdoor sports facilities in Seoul, Jeonbuk province were utilized for analysis. For analysis of the data, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis and structural equating modeling were performed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0. Main findings were as follows : First, Leisure function had a positive effect on self-efficacy. Second, Self-efficacy had a positive effect on quality of life. Third, Leisure function had a positive effect on quality of life. Fourth, Self-efficacy mediated the relationship between leisure function and quality of life. Our findings revealed a meaningful way to lead healthy life in the elderly.
The purpose of this study is to compare the physical, psychological, and social well-being of elderly women living in rural areas depending on their participation in swimming activities. Study sample consisted of 41 elderly women residing in the G province of C region who participated in swimming activities at least 3 times per week for one or more years, and 43 elderly women of the same area who did not participate in swimming activities. Data was collected over the course of 6 weeks. Analysis of the data showed that there are significant differences between participants and non-participants of swimming activities in their physical well-being(pain, flexibility), psychological well-being(perceived health status, depression), and their social well-being(strengthened interpersonal relations). In other words, participants of swimming activities, compared to non-participants, were in better physical, psychological, and social conditions. Thus, active encouragement and support must be in place for elderly women in rural areas to engage in swimming activities by utilizing local swimming facilities.

It is necessary to pay attention to healthy eating habits and attitudes toward health functional foods at a time when the incidence of diseases increases exponentially due to side effects of westernized eating habits. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of healthy eating habits and attitudes toward health functional foods on mood states of college students and the elderly. As a result of the analysis, in the elderly, the explanatory power for vitality emotion was lower than that of college students, and only healthy eating habits were factors that significantly explained. For anxiety-depression, it was found that health eating habits could explain the decrease in anxiety-depression emotions even less only in the elderly, and for anger emotions, neither college students nor the elderly showed significant explanatory power. This suggests that it is necessary to further research and analyze the experimental and practical effects based on a wider group and various emotions on how health functional foods and healthy eating habits affect emotions.

The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze life habits and senior fitness according to metabolic syndrome by sex and age in the elderly and prevent metabolic syndrome in the elderly. A questionnaire survey for life habits and senior fitness measurement were conducted with 159 old men and 233 old women(a total of 392) who used welfare facilities for the elderly located in G Metropolitan City. The results were as follows. 1. In the comparison of life habits according to metabolic syndrome by sex and age, while old men showed a significant difference in smoking, drinking and drug intake, and stress relief, old women showed a significant difference in drinking and drug intake and dietary habits. 2. In the comparison of senior fitness according to metabolic syndrome by sex and age, while old men had a significant difference in lower and upper body muscle strength, old women had a significant difference in lower and upper body muscle strength, and general endurance. Based on the findings, the elderly's life habits according to metabolic syndrome had a difference in smoking, drinking and drug, and dietary life and senior fitness had a significant difference in muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance. Thus, the elderly need the methods for exercise habits and stress relief for healthy life. Also, old men should steadily strive to improve flexibility, endurance, agility, and balance and old women should steadily strive to improve agility and balance. When the elderly are careful for decreased fitness with age and strive to maintain healthy life habits, their quality of life will be improved and metabolic syndrome will be prevented.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the local stability of the lower extremity joints and muscle activation patterns of the lower extremity during walking between falling and non-falling group in the elderly women. Method: Forty women, heel strikers, were recruited for this study. Twenty subjects (age:72.55±5.42yrs; height:154.40±4.26cm; mass:57.40±6.21kg; preference walking speed:0.52±0.17m/s; fall frequency=1.70±1.26 times) had a history falls(fall group) within two years and Twenty subjects (71.90±2..90yrs; height:155.28±4.73cm; mass:56.70±5.241kg; preference walking speed: 0.56±0.13m/s) had no history falls(non-fall group). While they were walking on a instrumented treadmill at their preference speed for a long while, kinematic and EMG signals were obtained using 3-D motion capture and wireless EMG electrodes, respectively. Local stability of the ankle and knee joint were calculated using Lyapunov Exponent (LyE) and muscles activation and their co-contraction index were also quantified. Hypotheses were tested using one-way ANOVA and Mann-Whitey. Spearman rank was also used to determine the correlation coefficients between variables. Level of significance was set at p<.05. Results: Local stability in the knee joint adduction-abduction was significantly greater in fall group than non-fall group(p<.05). Activation of anterior tibials that acts on the foot segment dorsal flexion was greater in non-fall group than fall group(p<.05). CI between gastrocnemius and anterior tibials was found to be significantly different between two groups(p<.05). In addition, there was significant correlation between CI of the leg and LyE of the ankle joint flexion-extention in the fall group(p<.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, muscles that act on the knee joint abduction-adduction as well as gastrocnemius and anterior tibials that act on the ankle joint flexion-extention need to be strengthened to prevent from potential fall during walking.
