  • The study seeks to conduct an oral stereognosis assessment of the elderly, identify characteristics and confirm the association with cognition, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living(IADL), Quality of Life(QOL). Oral stereognosis(OS) was evaluated on 20 senior citizens aged 75 or older living in Gyeonggi-do. Cognition was used as MoCA-K(Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Korean), IADL as K-IADL(Korean Instrumental Activities of Daily Living), and QOL as GQOL(Geriatric Quality of Life scale). OS decreases accuracy with age, unaffected by the level of education. Shapes with clear edges and broad sides were found to be easy to recognize. OS is related to cognition, IADL and QOL. Through this study, the OS of the elderly could predict the functional level and QOL, including cognition. Therefore, it can be used as a basic research for the physical and mental health management of the elderly through oral lectures, and the development of oral stereognosis tools for the elderly through large scale subjects should be made.

Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 241 workers at nursing homes in Gwangju and Jeonnam, Korea from May to June, 2016. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 19.0 program for independent t-test or one-way ANOVA analysis. Results: The data analysis showed that workers at nursing homes had lower knowledge about periodontal diseases (65.1%) than about denture management (78.5%). The knowledge of periodontal disease and denture management of workers with experience of oral care education for elderly was significantly higher than that of non-experienced ones (p<0.01). On the question whether those workers should get oral health care education is necessary or not, respondents answered positively (They scored 4.10 points on the 5-point Likert scale from 1 point - Not at all to 5 points - definitely yes). Conclusions: It is necessary to provide elderly oral care education to workers at nursing homes. Furthermore, oral health professionals should be deployed for systematic and practical oral care for elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for improving the oral health of the elderly and quality of their lives by analyzing the relationship among the geriatric denture-related characteristics, denture satisfaction, and geriatric oral health assessment index. For this study, the elderly aged 65 or higher who resided in Euseong-gun, Yeongju-si, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do were surveyed from March 25, 2013 to May 9 of the same year. The results of this study showed that the denture satisfaction had high correlation with the 'satisfaction with denture attachment', 'satisfaction with aesthetic function of pronunciation', and satisfaction with masticatory function. Moreover, the causative relation was found to exist among the geriatric denture-related characteristics, denture satisfaction, and geriatric oral health assessment index. Thus, it is considered necessary to establish the institutional system and take measures that can improve the awareness towards the geriatric oral health education and geriatric oral health state with respect to effective use and management of denture.

The subjects of this study were 142 elderly women aged 60 years or older who were surveyed through questionnaires, interviews, counseling, and oral examinations. The SPSS program was used for frequency analysis, descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results of the study showed that the number affected on daily life were 1.4 in average and the oral health condition was the highest at scaling (59.4%). When the oral status was unsatisfactory, it was found to be uncomfortable in daily life. In case of oral pain, oral status and poor removal of calculus, the number and frequency in daily life were increased. In conclusion, the oral health of elderly women can improve their daily life ability and affect the quality of life. Therefore, a systematic oral care plan is needed through the expansion of oral health promotion education for elderly women and the development of continuous preventive programs.

Based on general characteristics, the study of the halitosis showed higher score which is older age, oral health attitude, and living together. The result showed that the use of denture, dental intelligent quotient (dental IQ) and type of denture were significantly correlated with halitosis. These results indicated that halitosis was affected by denture and oral health index. According to these findings, it is necessary to develop and apply the oral health promotion program which is include the management of halitosis especially for elderly person.

According to general characteristics, cardiovascular diseases were found to be related to gender, education level of those living with family; and age and income level of elderly living alone. The oral health status, oral health patterns and cardiovascular disease distribution of both groups for the past year were examined. The relationship between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease was related to hypertension only in the living with family. • Background: This study involved a geriatric oral care expert who developed the competencies of students in the Department of Dental Hygiene and conducted preliminary research to develop an effective curriculum. Methods: A questionnaire was conducted in the last week of class targeting students who took courses in geriatric dentistry, geriatric dental hygiene, and practice. In order to confirm the educational effect according to the differences in the geriatric dental hygiene curriculum, the differences in students' achievement of major competencies, awareness of the geriatric dental hygiene process, class satisfaction, and ageism were analyzed. Results: Regarding major competency attainment, 'communication competency' was significantly higher in PBL education that combined theory and practice than that theory-oriented PBL education (p=0.038). For ageism, the tendency to avoid older adults was low in PBL education, which combined theory and practice, and was statistically significant (p=0.040). For class satisfaction, the rate of responding 'very high' for the 'class atmosphere' was significantly high (p=0.025) for PBL education that combined theory and practice. Conclusion: The PBL teaching method can be useful as a geriatric dental hygiene curriculum. However, it would be more effective to create a curriculum so that education in geriatric dental hygiene care practice can be combined with theory rather than a theoretical education alone.
