  • The purpose of this study is to provide evidences throught integrative review of non-pharmacological intervention studies for constipation in the elderly in Korea. Through the domestic search engines RISS and KISS, eleven studies were selected by searching for theses and academic journals published in Korea from 2010 to January 2023. According to the study result, relevant studies were 11, and non-pharmacological interventions included abdominal massage, foot massage, acupressure, moxibustion, lifestyle intervention, carbonated water intake, and complex therapy. Constipation, sleep quality, and depression were confirmed as effects of the intervention. However, there is no study confirming the quality of life related to constipation in the elderly, so it is necessary to develop and apply a non-pharmacological intervention program for constipation considering the quality of life of the elderly.

  • This study explores the images of the elderly held by non-elderly. Unlike previous studies on the topic, it considers various dimensions of the images including health, personality, intelligence, and economic ability. The study also attempts to examine factors affecting the images by age groups of non-elderly as well as the dimensions above. The data come from a nationwide survey on the Korean Elderly conducted by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2004. Analysis of the samples aged 20-64 reveals that the overall image of the elderly are negative across four dimensions. Nonetheless, differences by dimensions are also observed. Young people in their 20s are more likely than other age groups to have negative views on elderly's health. In the meanwhile, the middle aged are more likely to have negative views on elderly's economic ability. Multivariate analysis based on legit regression model shows that the images of the elderly are affected by age, place of residence, co-residence with older persons, attitude toward life in old age. The findings from this study contain important implications for the improvement of the elderly's images in rapidly aging society.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between elderly suicide rates and socio-economic factors from the macroscopic perspectives. As certain theoretical background of elderly suicide, sociological and economic perspectives are applied. The economic factors of elderly suicide rates consisted of economic growth and unemployment rate, economic activity rate of the aged, and relative poverty rate (income inequality rate). The sociological factors included social welfare spending, divorce rate, growth rate of population aging, and elderly dependency ratio. According to research findings, first, the more economic activity of the aged is low, the more elderly suicide rate is high. Second, the more social welfare spending rate goes flat, the more elderly suicide rate is growing. Third, the more relative poverty rate (income inequality), increasing population aging rate, and elderly dependency ratio are high, elderly suicide rate goes high at the same time. Finally, this study proposed several socio-economic policy alternatives for preventing continuous growth of Korean elderly suicide rate.

  • Various kinds of living circumstances are making population structure of Korean changed. That is, number of the children is decreased and that of the aged is increased. It is predicted that population of the children and the aged will be almost same until 2020. With above, as the expectation of the aged on healthy living might be increased, some special programs for the aged will be needed strongly. At this point, Korean aged population might be economically poor, comparing with other generation. In general, economic factor affects the subjective living-satisfaction and health status of them. Moreover, educational status, household shape and family tieing also affect their health status. According to the foreign articles, health status of the aged might be related to income, educational status, job, employed or/not, marital status, family structure, sex, and childhood condition. decrease of the income or unemployment could make the death rate of the aged higher. During childhood, discordance among the family might affect their health status after. IGUR is also important factor to affect the adulthood health. Positive life style of the aged would lessen their unequality of the health among them. Nutritional status of the Korean aged population might be indicated under the nutritional recommendation. It is affected by their income, education level, social class, and residing place. (Korean J Nutrition 33(1) : 86-101, 2000)

  • This study is tried to contribute to the development of nursing intervention for the health promotion of the elderly by comparing the health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) of the working and non-working elderly using the data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2020). The subjects of the study were the elderly aged 65 or older, 512 working elderly and 862 non-working elderly, with a total of 1,374 people. As a result of the study, it was found that the quality of life of the working elderly was higher than that of the non-working elderly in all five areas of health-related quality of life. In particular, the non-working elderly had a lower health-related quality of life at twice (95%CI=1.32-3.14) in the area of self-care compared to the working elderly. Anxiety/depression was found to be 1.6 times (95%CI=1.19-2.35), daily activity 1.6 times (95%CI=1.18-2.25), mobility 1.5 times (95%CI=1.19-1.92), and pain/discomfort 1.2 times (95%CI=1.02-1.64). Therefore, based on this, it is suggested that it is necessary to develop a program that can maintain and promote the independent standard of living and mental health of the elderly.
