This study analyzed the efficiency of a trunk with branches and a trunk with feeders route system comparing the user cost and operator cost of those route systems. Basically, a trunk with branches is more efficient than a trunk with feeders in the passengers' perspective if the transit system of a trunk and feeders are the same. In the case that the trunk system is hierarchically higher than the feeder system, a trunk with feeders has the competitive edge over a trunk with branches if the saving of travel cost induced by using the trunk line is larger than the increasing waiting and transfer cost. This result is consistent with the previous research by Park et al.(2007c), which analyzed the efficiency of hierarchical structure in a grid transit network. If the travel demand of each origins and destinations is low, increasing headway according to the travel demand can increase passenger load or operating efficiency in a trunk with feeders route system. In this case, a trunk with feeders route system is more prevalent as the operating cost, route length, and number of destinations increases, while it is less prevalent as the transfer cost and passengers' time value of the waiting time increases. In cases that central business district, which is located in the middle of a trunk line, generates travel demand, a trunk with feeders is more efficient than a trunk with branches with the increasing travel demand from and to the CBD. Therefore it can be concluded that to have a dual operating system between CBD and suburban is more efficient than one type transit system. The efficiency of that system can be increased through an efficient transfer system that can reduce the transfer cost.
Max-plus algebra is a nonlinear system comprised of two operations, maximization (max) and addition (Plus), which are corresponding to the addition and the multiplication in conventional algebra, respectively. This methodology is applicable to many discrete event systems containing the state transition with the maximization and addition operation. Timetable with connection is one of such systems. We present the method based on max-plus algebra, which can make up timetable considering transfer and analyse its stability and robustness. In this study, it will be shown how to make up the timetable of the urban train and analyse its stability using Max-Plus algebra.

Recently, the management of metro business in large cities has become more difficult because of increased construction and operation costs. The purpose of this paper presents the construction of transfer system to resolve about recent tendency to decrease of metro-users and diminution of use efficiency which are serious problems of Busan metro. To cope with this situation, it is necessary to examine the methods of obtaining returns on development profits of land value rises that occur due to transfer system construction between Busan metro line #1 and line #2 in Yangsan area. Therefore, it was made use of research on metro utilization to presuppose service improvement, as an alternative, in the transfer system construction between metro and metro which might be powerful influence over metro-users. In this research, it was examined the actual situation of rises in land values brought about by the transfer system construction of metro line #1 and line #2 in Yangsan area with application of four (4) methods, and have calculated a basis of the development profits produced by the transfer system construction of metro line. According to the economical efficiency analysis, the total construction cost amount to 4,827.1 billion won of case #1 based on single track, and evaluate economically as B/C to 1.013, NPV to 72.7 billion, IRR to 5.614 percent.

Station transfers for smart card based railway networks refer to transfer pedestrian movements that occur at the origin and destination nodes rather than at a middle station. To calculate the optimum path for the railway network, a penalty for transfer pedestrian movement must be included in addition to the cost of within-car transit time. However, the existing link label-based path searching method is constructed so that the station transfer penalty between two links is detected. As such, station transfer penalties that appear at the origin and destination stations are not adequately reflected, limiting the effectiveness of the model. A ghost node may be introduced to expand the network, to make up for the station transfer penalty, but has a pitfall in that the link label-based path algorithm will not hold up effectively. This research proposes an optimal path search algorithm to reflect station transfer penalties without resorting to enlargement of the existing network. To achieve this, a method for applying a directline transfer penalty by comparing Ticket Gate ID and the line of the link is proposed.
Four alternative plans for the bus network in Daejeon metropolitan city, which have different hierarchical structure, were proposed : Alternative 1 represents a bus network without hierarchical structure, and Alternative 2, 3, and 4 represent bus networks with primary, intermediate, and advanced hierarchical structures, respectively. Efficiency of the alternative plans were evaluated based on the evaluation index including travel time cost, waiting time cost, and transition penalty cost. The travel time cost was decreased as the level of hierarchical structure gets higher until it reaches the extremely high level. As the level of hierarchical structure get higher, the waiting time cost significantly decreased while the transition penalty cost increased. Collectively, a bus network with hierarchical structure was shown to be more efficient than without it in the light of total travel cost. For the bus network with hierarchical structure, total travel cost shows a concave curve, which implies that there exists an optimal level of hierarchical structure in a bus network.
The recent increase of light rail construction by the private sector in Korea has caused a new issue in forecasting rail demand. Integrated fare systems between several rail operators is convenient and brings cost savings to users, and therefore is also very effective in increasing demand. However, it causes some short-term revenue loss to operators so that the private sector often suggests a non-integrated fare system. The current rail demand forecasting model is based upon an integrated fare system. Thus this model cannot be used to forecast the demand with a non-integrated fare system. Some value of transfer fare should be estimated and applied to forecast the demand in a non-integrated fare system. This study conducted a stated preference (SP) survey on urban railway passengers and estimated the value of transfer fare. The estimated value is 2,609 Won/hr, which is about 52% of in-vehicle time. This shows railway users have a tendency to pay more for transfer fares to save time or distance. This value has some limitations since it is derived from the SP survey. If some non-integrated fare system is applied in the future and a RP survey is conducted and compared with these study results, a more clear value of the transfer fare will be derived.
The study suggested a demand forecasting method which explicitly reflects transfer between various transport modes especially related light rail transit project with multi-modal transit system. The suggested method classifies several groups depending on characteristic of trips and applies different demand model for each group to explain travel pattern more realistically More specifically. the trips was classified by trips within the LRT route, trips between inside and outside of the LRT route. and through trips via the LRT route. The study also suggested a evaluation measurement of time saving due to the LRT construction, which are consistent along with the do-case and the do-nothing-case even though some mode shift could be happen after introducing the LRT.

In smart card data, movement of railway passengers appears in order of smart card terminal ID. The initial terminal ID holds information on the entering station's tag-in railway line, the final terminal ID the exit station tag-out railway line, and the middle terminal ID the transfer station tag subway line. During the past, when the metropolitan city rail consisted of three public corporations (Seoul Metro, Incheon Transit Corporation, and Korail), OD data was expressed in two metrics of initial and final smart card terminal ID. Recently, with the entrance of private corporations like Shinbundang Railroad Corporation, and UI Corporation, inclusion of entering transfer line terminal ID and exiting transfer line terminal ID as part of Chain OD has become standard. Exact route construction using Chain OD has thus become integral as basic data for revenue allocation amongst metropolitan railway transport corporations. Accordingly, path detection in railway networks has evolved to an optimal path detection problem using Chain OD, hence calling for a renewed solution method. This research proposes an optimal path detection method between the initial terminal ID and final terminal ID of Chain OD terminal IDs within the railway network. Here, private line transfer TagIn/Out must be reflected in optimal path detection using Chain OD. To achieve this, three types of link-based optimum path detection methods are applied in order of 1. node-link, 2. link-link, 3. link-node. The method proposed based on additional path costs is shown to satisfy the optimal conditions.

Separate transportation card readers that record the amount of transfer volume occurring during movement in-between lines within the metropolitan railway transfer stations do not exist. This research proposes a model to estimate passenger transit movements in transfer stations that adequately reproduces characteristics arising during a transfer trip. The model used in this study assumes that passengers adopt transfer behaviors that minimize their generalized costs during transfer trips. Further, two measures are sought in order to reflect attributes of the metropolitan railway. The first is that similar paths connect origin and destination stations. For this, the M-Similar Paths method is applied to the model to identify the similar paths that arise. The second is that passengers perceive increasing number of transfers as additional transfer costs, which is reflected by means of the Stepwise Transfer Coefficient. Two case studies of metropolitan railway are used to propose measures for analysis of transfer trips. Twenty directional transit phenomena are reproduced for Sindorim railway station. Aggregate directional transit(A), aggregate inter-line transit(B), and B/A are calculated on a percentage basis for 33 metropolitan railway transfer stations, and using this, the functional role of transfers is explored.

Recently, the Korean government promoted the construction of metropolitan express subway to connect major transportation hub in the metropolitan area within 30 minutes. Most stations of the metropolitan express subway are connected to existing subway stations, so the importance of transfer increased. Although many studies have been conducted on the effect of transfer penalty on route choice, there are few studies on the transfer behavior of the metropolitan express subway. Therefore, in this study, a transfer behavior analysis was conducted on the Shinbundang Line, a representative metropolitan express subway. To analyze the transfer behavior according to the degree of traffic congestion and the presence of fare payment, route choice models were made using transport card data divided according to week, time, and user characteristics. As a result of the analysis, users of the metropolitan express subway had greater disutility to the transfer waiting time compared to the transfer moving time. Furthermore, especially during the peak time, EIVM(Equivalent in-vehicle minutes) of the transfer waiting time was 3.51. In this study, EIVM for metropolitan express subway users were analyzed to be 2.6 minutes, which is significantly lower than the results of previous studies on subways. This suggests that there is a difference in the transfer penalty between subways and metropolitan express subway, and that it is necessary to apply the transfer penalty between subways and express subway differently when forecasting subway traffic demand.
