The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance and pressure drop on the air-side particulate fouling of heat exchangers for air conditioners. Air conditioners being used in the field such as inn, restaurant, and office are collected in chronological used order. Test results show 15% decrease of the cooling capacity and 44% increase of the pressure drop for the 7 years air conditioners used in the seaside inn.

The evaluation of aluminum flat tube and louver fin heat exchangers for a condenser in residential air-conditioning applications has been conducted. A series of tests for two-different brazed aluminum heat exchangers was performed and the results were compared with conventional fin and tube heat exchangers for residential air-conditioning system. Refrigerant charge amount for a window-system air-conditioner with the brazed aluminum condenser is decreased by 35% and the volume and material of heat exchanger can be reduced by 50% compared to the conventional fin and tube heat exchangers.

A popular type of residential air conditioner is the split system which has two separate units: indoor and outdoor units During field installation of the split system, the potential exists for not setting the charge exactly to the manufacturer´s specifications. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the refrigerant charge on the performance of the air conditioner. An air conditioner with capillary tube expansions was tested for various refrigerant charges. The results indicated that the more charge resulted in the more flowrate of the refrigerant. The flowrate of the refrigerant was one of the most important factors to understand the e(sects of the charge on the performance of the air conditioner with capillary tube expansions. Under-charge results in wide region of superheated vapor of the refrigerant in the evaporator, while over-charge results in high temperature of the liquid refrigerant in the evaporator.

An experimental study using a psychrometric calorimeter was conducted to investigate the temperature and pressure mea surement errors permitted for determining cooling capacity of an air conditioner. First, the instrument calibration was made in accordance with the related test methods and guidelines in order to accurately evaluate basic performance (cooling capacity and airs flow rate). Secondly, a parametric study was performed to examine the effect of measurement error involved if temperature and pressure measuring instruments on the cooling capacity calculation. From the results, it was found that the degree of accuracy for both temperature and pressure measurements played an important role on the error occurring in the determination of cooling capacity and needed to be maintained within a certain value to guarantee required accuracy of cooling capacity.

Experiments have been conducted in order to make comparisons of a alternative refrigerant (R-410A) cycle characteristic with an existing refrigerant (R-22) cycle characteristic in terms of cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP). The parameters examined in the present work include air flow rate, indoor/outdoor air temperatures, and indoor relative humidity. These two refrigeration cycles share all components except compressor, accumulator, oil separator, and piping connecting them. The measurements were made using an air-enthalpy calorimeter. The experimental results show that the R-410A cycle has many advantages over indoor conditions while the R-22 cycle has better performance over outdoor conditions.

Slim telecommunication cabinet cooler, equipped with parallel flow heat exchangers and operating with R-22, is developed. The performance is compared with imported one, equipped with fin-tube heat exchangers and operating with R-134a. Test results show that the newly-developed cooler increases the cooling capacity by 6% and EER by 33%. The refrigerant charge for the developed cooler is 500g compared with 1250g for the imported one. The adoption of parallel flow heat exchanger appears to have reduced the refrigerant charge. In addition, it is shown that the reduced air flow rates through parallel heat exchangers as compared with those through fin-tube heat exchangers are beneficial to the reduction of the equipment noise.

Thermodynamic analysis of cascade refrigeration systems has attracted considerable research attention. On the other hand, a system evaluation based on thermodynamic analyses of the individual parts, including the evaporator, condenser, intercooler, expansion valve, etc., has received less attention. In this study, performance analysis was conducted on a cascade refrigeration system, which has an individual cooling and refrigeration evaporator, and equips the intercooler and air-cooled condenser in a series in a lower cycle. The thermo-fluid design was then performed on the major components of the system - upper condenser, lower condenser, cooling evaporator, refrigeration evaporator, intercooler, compressor, electronic expansion valve - of 15 kW refrigeration, and 8 kW cooling capacity using R-410A. A series of simulations were conducted on the designed system. The change in outdoor temperature from 26 C to 38 C resulted in the cooling capacity of the lower evaporator remaining approximately the same, whereas it decreased by 9% at the upper evaporator and by 63% at the intercooler. The COP decreased with increasing outdoor temperature. In addition, the COP of the cycle with the intercooler operation was higher that of the cycle without the intercooler operation. Furthermore, the increase in the upper condenser size by two fold increased the upper evaporator by 4%. On the other hand, the lower evaporator capacity remained the same. The COP of the upper cycle increased with increasing upper condenser size, whereas that of the lower cycle remained almost the same. When the size of the lower condenser was increased 2.8 fold, the intercooler capacity increased by 8%, whereas those of upper and the lower evaporator remained approximately the same. Furthermore, the COP of the lower cycle increased with an increase in the lower condenser. On the other hand, the change of the upper condenser was minimal.

Numerical performance analysis of the vane-roller integral type swing compressor was conducted. The swing compressor has been investigated for the highly efficient air conditioning system. Performance analysis results of the swing compressor were compared with those of a conventional rotary compressor. Mechanical and gas losses of a swing compressor were larger than those of a rotary compressor. However in case of mass flow rate from the discharge port, the swing compressor was about 6.68% higher than the rotary compressor. Hence the EER, the cooling capacity and the compressor work of the swing compressor were about 3.71%, 6.69% and 2.90% higher than the rotary compressor respectively.

The running condition of multi-system air conditioner is prone to vary largely as it is designed for individual conditioning in each space of middle and small sized buildings. This leads to overcooling in case of partial load run, while the lack of capacity happens in case of full load run. Besides these, there exist such problems as instabilities due to the uneven refrigerant distribution caused by fluctuation of load and the change in piping line. Based upon the basic study on the function characteristics found in parts needed for maximized system working design in order to troubleshoot, the system functioning pattern should be identified through the different tests with various operating circumstances and the analysis models should be developed. With this ground, the control logic has to be made to have a control over capacity and make possible the efficient distribution of refrigerant.
The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fouling characteristics trough accelerated tests. The fouling characteristics are analyzed as functions of a dust concentration (1.28 and 3.84 $g/m^3$), a face velocity (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s), and a surface condition. The cooling capacity in the slitted finned-tube heat exchangers at the face velocity of 1 m/s decreases about 2% and the pressure drop increases up to 57%. The rate of build-up of fouling is observed to be 3 times slower for this three-fold reduction of dust concentration whilst still approaching the same asymptotic level.
