In this paper, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of propane and iso-butane in micro-fin tubes were investigated experimentally. Test section has a micro-fin tube with outside diameter of 12.70 mm, and 75 fins with a fin heights of 0.25 mm. The experimental results summarize as the followings: The average evaporation heat transfer coefficients of He's refrigerants is higher than those of HCFC22, and appeared in the order of iso-butane, propane with respect to the approaching of the high mass flux. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of micro fin tube is about $10{\sim}80%$ higher than those of smooth tube. This results from the study can be used in the case of designing heat transfer exchanger using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

Condensing heat transfer characteristics of hydrocarbon refrigerants are experimentally investigated. Single component hydrocarbon refrigerants (propane, isobutane, butane and propylene) and binary mixtures of propane/isobutane and propane/butane are considered as test fluids. Local condensing heat transfer coefficients of selected refrigerants are obtained from overall conductance measurement. Average heat transfer coefficients at different mass fluxes and heat transfer rates are shown and compared with those of R22. Pure hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher values of heat transfer coefficient than R22. It is also found that there is a heat transfer degradation for hydrocarbon mixtures due to composition variation during condensation. Measured condensing heat transfer coefficients are compared with predicted values by available correlations. An empirical correlation for pure and mixed hydrocarbon is developed, and it shows good agreement with experimental data.

In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of 2 nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC134a and HFC134a/HCFC123 at various compositions were measured on a horizontal smooth tube. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3~8K. Test results showed that HTCs of tested mixtures were 11.0~85.0% lower than the ideal values calculated by the mass fraction weighting of the pure components HTCs. Thermal resistance due to the diffusion vapor film was partly responsible for the significant reduction of HTCs with these nonazeotropic mixtures. The measured data were compared against the predicted ones by Colburn and Drew\`s film model and a good agreement was observed.
High pressure, pressure ratio, refrigerating effect, heat transfer from the condenser and the power of the compressor etc. of a self-made refrigeration equipment for R-12 are investigated when R-12 and R-134a are used as the coolants. The comparison between the performance for R-12 and that for R-134a is made. As a result, R-134a is better than R-12 in the view of high pressure, refrigerating effect and the coefficient of performance and vice versa in the view of pressure ratio, exit gas temperature from the compressor and heat transfer from the condenser.

In numerical analysis on the thermal performance of the heat exchanger with phase change fluids, the numerical values of thermodynamic properties are needed. But the steam table should be modeled properly as the direct use of thermodynamic properties of the steam table is impossible. In this study the function approximation characteristics of neural networks was used in modeling the saturated vapor region of refrigerant R12. The neural network consists of one input layer with one node, two hidden layers with 10 and 20 nodes each and one output layer with 7 nodes. Input can be both saturation temperature and saturation pressure and two cases were examined. The proposed model gives percentage error of ${\pm}$0.005% for enthalpy and entropy, ${\pm}$0.02% for specific volume and ${\pm}$0.02% for saturation pressure and saturation temperature except several points. From this results neural network could be a powerful method in function approximation of saturated vapor region of R12.

CFC-12 used in mobile air conditioning(MAC) system has been replaced by R-134a, a type of HFC refrigerant, from 1991 to 1994. R-134a has since been widely used as a refrigerant of a mobile air conditioner. However, it is one of the six main green house gases listed in Kyoto Protocol, which makes it imperative to regulate its emission and develop alternative refrigerants. In this study, the concentration of leaked R-134a was measured using VT(Variable Temperature) shed and Running loss test shed to analyze the level of air conditioner refrigerant leaked in a vehicle. According to the analysis of the concentration of R-134a leaked from a vehicle parked, annual leakage amount of R-134a was in the range of 6.46~13.28 g/yr. The figure was similar with the leakage from the mobile air conditioning system currently used. In a study using the same vehicle model, a vehicle equipped with dual evaporation system had a higher leakage rate of refrigerant than a vehicle with a single evaporation system. It appears that the added fittings and joints of the dual evaporator system led to higher leakage rate. Besides, the analysis of the change in R-134a concentration under various car speed found that more refrigerant leaked under high speed(100km/hr) and but the volume of the wind did not affect to the variation of refrigerant leakage.

In this study, the computer modeling for prediction of the performance of fin-tube heat exchanger using alternative refrigerant, HFC-134a was developed and the computer program for calculating the various properties of HFC-134a and the existing refrigerant CFC-12 and HCFC-22 was made. The heat exchanger modeling is based on a tube-by-tube approach, which is capable of analysis for the complex coil array. Performance of each tube is analyzed separately by considering the cross-flow heat transfer with external airstream and the appropriate heat and mass transfer relationships. A performance comparison according to the different refrigerants is provided using this developed model. As the result of this study, total heat transfer rate of evaporator and condenser using HFC-134a were found higher than that of using CFC-12 for the same operating conditions. When the mass flow rate of HFC-134a was less than CFC-12 about 18. 16%, the cooling capacities of evaporator were found to be the same.

The method to consider gravity effect on the performance of a condenser is developed, and a simple condenser having 'nU' type two circuits is analyzed. Each circuit has the same length and inlet air-side operational conditions. The only difference between two circuits is the direction of refrigerant flow, which is exactly opposite each other between the upper 'n' type circuit and the lower 'U' type circuit. It is shown that the gravity makes the distribution of refrigerant flow uneven in the two circuits at lower refrigerant flow rates; heat transfer rate also becomes uneven. Moreover, much of the refrigerant exists as liquid state in the circuit having low refrigerant flow rate, which will make the cycle balance unstable in the refrigeration cycle system like a heat pump.

This study is focused on the experimental analysis of the noise induced by phase change of refrigerant at the entrance of capillary tube. The refrigerant is usually two-phase condition when it flowed into the capillary tube. At the entrance of capillary tube, the phase condition of refrigerant is formed by sub-cool control. If it has sufficient sub-cool temperature, all of the vapor refrigerants turned to liquid, which means there is only liquid. Otherwise, the gas is coexisted. Based on this theory, we experiment on each case by changing sub-cool temperature using refrigerant-supplying equipment. The noise level is measured for each case and compared.
The performance and the internal flow of the impeller of the centrifugal chiller compressor with refrigerant R12 as working fluid were studied numerically, using CFD code, CFX-Tascflow, which is commercially available. In this numerical study, the thermodynamic and transport properties of the refrigerant gas were generated by the property program of NIST and linked with main program to extend the capability of the code to refrigerant gases. Numerical study was applied to several mass flow rates near the design mass flow rate at constant rotating speed. Overall performance and flow characteristics of the impeller at impeller exit were investigated. The results were physically reasonable and showed good agreement with experimental measurement at the design flow rate.
