Estimation of Tensile Properties of Pipe Bends Manufactured by Cold-Bending (냉간 굽힘 가공된 곡관의 인장물성치 예측)

  • In this study, tensile tests were performed on specimens that simulated the cold-bending and heat-treatment of pipe bends to understand the mechanical properties of pipe bends manufactured by cold-bending followed by heat-treatment for relieving residual stress. The strength and ductility of cold-worked materials were respectively found to be higher and lower than those of the parent material although heat-treatment was carried out to relieve residual stress. In addition, the increase in strength and decrease in ductility were proportional to the applied strain levels for cold-working. It was thus inferred that the intrados and extrados regions of pipe bends that were cold-bended and heat-treated show higher strength and lower ductility compared to the parent straight pipe and that the mechanical properties at the crown region are nearly the same as those of the parent straight pipe.

  • $360^{\circ}$ bending of Ti-6Al-4V large-diameter seamless tube(62.37 mm $OD {\times} 4.40mm$ wall thickness) has been achieved at room temperature without heating. The bending process comprised two steps : the first step is $360^{\circ}$ bending by an uniquely designed rotary bender allowing spring back, which is subsequently eliminated by the second or finishing step which comprised repeated bending processes by powered three roll bender, In odor to prevent collapse of tube during bending, Cerro $Tru^{TM}$(Trade name of a non-ferrous low melting point alloy)has been employed as a filler metal. The resultant ovality(out of roundness) obtained was 1.28%, as compared with 6~8% without applying Cerro $Tru^{TM}$.

An Evaluation of Bending Fatigue Strength for Cold Forged Bevel Gear (냉간단조 베벨기어의 굽힘피로강도 평가)

  • Gears are the most commonly used parts in automotive and industrial applications. One of most common modes of gear failures is tooth breakage, which is usually produced by the bending fatigue failure. It is important to manufacture the gears which can withstand the applied stresses in view of safety and economic requirement. This paper deals with bending fatigue strength for cold forged bevel gear. Especially, to compare fatigue characteristics for manufacturing processes difference, bending fatigue tests of bevel gears made by three different processes respectively. Results indicate that the fatigue strength of bevel gear is improved by cold forging process. Intergranular fracture is found on fatigue fracture surface, and dimples are observed on final fracture surface. The fatigue failure cannot be considered as a deterministic quantity, but must be characterized statistically. This study proposes a method to estimate bending fatigue lift of the bevel gear using the probability-load-life and Weibull analysis.

  • The wall thickness of the Ti-6Al-4V Large-Diameter Seamless Tube, which is supposed to be a very important parameter in a system design, was measured during $360^{\circ}$ cold bending processes. The factors or processes affecting the wall thickness include 1) primary bending, 2)secondary or finishing step of the $360^{\circ}$ bending, 3)cleaning processes in CERO TRUTM(CT)process. But thinning effects of the wall thickness during the cleaning processes are negligible compared to those during the formers. The variations in the percentages of the change in wall thickness were found to be from -14% to +16%.

  • In aluminum sheet metal forming, the conventional forming methods of T4 or T6 heat-treated sheets result in low formability and dimensional accuracy. This study suggests a new forming method for aluminum sheets called as hot forming quenching (HFQ) that solves the problems faced in the conventional method. HFQ combines the heat treatment and forming processes through the forming die during the quenching of a solid solution. To evaluate the application of HFQ to the sheet forming of aluminum, an Erichsen and V-bending test are performed in this study to measure the dimensional accuracy and formability, which are then compared with those of the conventional forming method. Furthermore, the strength and hardness of the products formed by HFQ are measured to confirm the degradation in mechanical properties compared with the conventional forming method, which shows the validity of the application of HFQ to aluminum sheet metal forming.

  • The characteristics of the tool system give many effects into the costs and qualities for the finished components. Therefore, a tool life is one of the important issues on cold forging industry. However, since variables related with tool life are many complicated, the studies for solution should be investigated by the systematic research approach. In this study, heat-treatment of tool material is investigated to improve the tool life. Deep cryogenic treatment of tool steel is very efficient to improve the wear resistance due to the fine carbide. And, it is investigated that the shape and dimension of tool give effect into both tool life and quality of forged product.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the cold reduction rate and an ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) on the fatigue behaviors of STS 304L. The tensile strength, yield strength, hardness value and fatigue limit in the UFT fatigue test linearly increased as thickness decreased from 1.5 mm to 1.1 mm, as the cold reduction rate of STS 304L increased. As a result of the UFT fatigue test (R = -1) of four specimens, the fatigue limit of the S-N curve formed a knee point in the region of $10^6$, and the 2nd fatigue limit caused by giga cycle fatigue did not appeared. In the case of t = 1.1 mm, the highest fatigue limit was 345 MPa, which was 64.3% higher than the original material (t = 1.5 mm). As a result of the UFT fatigue test of STS 304L, many small surface cracks occurred, grown, coalesced while tearing.

  • The flange hub is a main component of an automotive steering system. Dimensional precision of the flange hub is very important for precise control of the steering force. Consequently, the process design for precision forming of a flange hub is required. The teeth of the flange hub are generally formed by bending. In this study, the formability of flange bending was investigated using FE simulations. For the optimum process conditions, the flange is bent by movement of an insert die, and the die angle and bending length are selected as $90^{\circ}$ and 4mm respectively.

  • Bending is one of the most common cold-stamping operations, recently it is many used to produce structural frame. Depending on the shape and dimensions of complex structural frame, a successive bending operation with simple dies may be economic. But, in this paper, it has been focused to reduce the bending operations by a successive-action compound die. Designed compound-die consists of blank-holder, cam, wedge and etc. In the result, this compound-die for structural frame enabled that it makes seven bending processes into one process, and improved productivity.
