Livestock Wastewater Treatment Using the DOF and PO2 System with High Concentration of Ozone (고농도 오존을 적용한 DOF와 PO2 시스템의 축산폐수처리)

  • Livestock wastewater is known to be very difficult to treat because it contains highly non-biodegradable organic material. Thus the DOF(Dissolved Ozone Flotation) system and the PO2(Pressurized Ozone Oxidation) system were built at the livestock wastewater treatment plant, and characteristics of treatments were investigated in this paper. Suspended Solids(SS) removal efficiency was over 94% by DOF system. 90% of $COD_{Mn}$ was removed, from 620 mg/L down to 63 mg/L by the DOF-PO2 system. During the period of operation, $SCOD_{Cr}$ was removed an average of 82%, from 890 mg/L down to 160 mg/L. 96% of UV-254 absorbance was also removed. TP removal efficiency was over 98%, from 27 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L, and TN was also removed 68% along with suspended solids. It was possible to meet effluent standards of the livestock wastewater treatment plant by the DOF-PO2 system along with biological treatment.

Investigation of SO2 Effect on TOMS O3 Retrieval from OMI Measurement in China (OMI 위성센서를 이용한 중국 지역에서 TOMS 오존 산출에 대한 이산화황의 영향 조사 연구)

  • In this present study, we identified the $SO_2$ effect on $O_3$ retrieval from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurement over Chinese Industrial region from 2005 through 2007. The Planetary boundary layer (PBL) $SO_2$ data measured by OMI sensor is used in this present study. OMI-Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) total $O_3$ is compared with OMI-Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (DOAS) total $O_3$ in various $SO_2$ condition in PBL. The difference between OMI-TOMS and OMI-DOAS total $O_3$ (T-D) shows dependency on $SO_2$ (R (Correlation coefficient) = 0.36). Since aerosol has been reported to cause uncertainty of both OMI-TOMS and OMI-DOAS total $O_3$ retrieval, the aerosol effect on relationship between PBL $SO_2$ and T-D is investigated with changing Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). There is negligible aerosol effect on the relationship showing similar slope ($1.83{\leq}slope{\leq}2.36$) between PBL $SO_2$ and T-D in various AOD conditions. We also found that the rate of change in T-D per 1.0 DU change in PBL, middle troposphere (TRM), and upper troposphere and stratosphere (STL) are 1.6 DU, 3.9 DU and 4.9 DU, respectively. It shows that the altitude where $SO_2$ exist can affect the value of T-D, which could be due to reduced absolute radiance sensitivity in the boundary layer at 317.5 nm which is used to retrieve OMI-TOMS ozone in boundary layer.

  • The characteristics of ozone generator targeted for air or water sterilizing in the vessel utilizing the surface corona discharge between the electrodes on the ceramic substrate was investigated by using the frequency control method. The frequency control was achieved by controlling the degree of resonance between the secondary winding inductance of transformer and the electrode capacitance of ceramic discharge plate, and the range of control was found to be 5 times of discharge current. This frequency control method showed the efficiency of 28 mP ozone generation and the stability within 3.4 % when the input voltage was varied within 40% range. The frequency control method is regarded to be more efficient way of corona discharge control compared to the conventional on/off control or voltage control methods.

  • A pilot scale study for removing odor and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was investigated in the standard water treatment plant equipped with ozone oxidation and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption processes. The removal efficiency of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the pilot scale standard water treatment process (PSWTP) was about 25%, however, no more removal in the ozone oxidation process. On a GAC after 30 days operation, DOC removal efficiency was about 75%. Odor removal efficiency was about 30% in PSWTP, 60% in ozone oxidation, and almost complete in well as DOC. Mid-1 and 2 that showed breakthrough in odor inducing material as well as DOC. Mid-1 and 2 chlorination was able to reduce trihalomethanes (THM) by 25% compared to prechloringation, while postchlorination alone could reduce them by 30%.

Changes in Quality of 'Mipung' Chestnut during Storage by Pre-treatment Methods after Harvest (수확 후 전처리 방법에 따른 '미풍' 밤의 저장 중 품질 변화)

  • The effects of pre-treatment methods (water cooling, water cooling+ozone, precooling+microbubble, water cooling+ozone+microbubble) after harvest on the quality of 'Mipung' chestnut were studied. Changes in quality of chestnut were greater precooling treatments effect than washing treatments. But, decaying rate and total microorganism were significantly differences among treatments. The decaying rate after 12 weeks storage was highest at 20.0% in non-treatments and lowest at 3.3% in water cooling+ozone and water cooling+ozone+microbubble treatments. The total microorganism immediately after washing treatments was in the order non-treatments (4.4 log CFU/g) > water cooling treatments (4.0 log CFU/g) > water cooling+ozone+microbubble treatments (3.5 log CFU/g) > water cooling+ozone treatments (3.4 log CFU/g) > water cooling+microbubble treatments (3.3 log CFU/g), and after 12 weeks storage was increased within 4.7 to 5.9 log CFU/g. Thus, the washing treatments, especially ozone treatments, extended the shelf-life of the 'Mipung' chestnut by inhibiting the decaying.

  • The butadiene rubber(BR) blends with chloroprene rubber(CR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Cure characteristics, mechanical properties, ozone resistance properties and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. The properties of ozone resistance of pure BR was significantly improved through blending with 50 wt% CR. Dynamic characteristics determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transition($T_g$) for the entire blends, $tan{\delta}$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with the increasing content of CR. Optimum cure time of compound was significantly lengthened with loading of CR.

  • The well-established nitric acid-sulfuric acid mixed acid process for the nitration of aromatic compounds has serious problems due to the large amount of waste acids and severe reaction conditions. Nitration of toluene can be conducted using nitrogen dioxide and ozone instead of mixed acid. We found that conc. nitric acid increased the reactivity as catalyst and the amount of nitrogen dioxide controlled the extent of nitration. Dinitration proceeded to more than 92 mole % conversion within 2 hr at $0^{\circ}C$ with 6 eq. of nitrogen dioxide and 2 eq./hr of ozone flow. Toluene completed mononitration within 30 min using 3 eq. of nitrogen dioxide, 3 eq. of nitric acid, and 1.5 eq./hr of ozone flow. As a clean process of aromatic nitration, this method is expected to replace the present process which causes the environmental problems.

  • This research investigated the exhaust gas purification system of gaseous ozone for pigpens. This system is applied to exhaust the gas outside after purification with ozone. This is very effective for purification and simple. And because this is not set in the pigpens, this system is not influence of pollution gas. This is effected to extend the life time of this system and this system is applied for non-window pigpens which does not need the ventilation.

  • This study is to identify the hazard of ozone and to evaluate ozone effect that is flowed into the cabin when the airplane is flying at high altitude. For this purpose, it is studied that how ozone is generated in the air, what the effect on human body is due to the cabin ozone and what the design criteria is considering or preventing the ozone hazard. And, finally the regulations and means of compliance are studied and introduced to assure that the aircraft satisfies the design criteria related to ozone.
