The second phase of low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW) disposal facility is under planned on the sedimentary rock in unsaturated zone. In this study, we created two meshes which were a matrix continuum mesh and a fracture continuum mesh to carry out 2 dimensional numerical modeling for groundwater flow in the unsaturated zone containing fractures focused on the second phase of LILW disposal facility. Two continuum meshes were developed using MINC in meshmaker module of TOUGH2 code. A fracture continuum mesh was included the k-field distribution of the permeability derived from the Discrete Fractured Network (DFN) modeling. To apply the unsaturated zone for the modeling, the gridding steps to generate mesh were developed. Each step to generate a mesh consisted of definition of materials, setting the initial conditions and creating grids using MINC. The methodology development of meshes in this study will be applied for more precise modeling of groundwater flow and mass transport.

This research proposed a model for automatically monitoring the quality of insulation adhesive application in external insulation construction. Upon case implementation, the area segmentation model demonstrated a 92.3% accuracy, while the area and distance calculation accuracies of the proposed model were 98.8% and 96.7%, respectively. These findings suggest that the model can effectively prevent the most common insulation defect, insulation failure, while simultaneously minimizing the need for on-site supervisory personnel during external insulation construction. This, in turn, contributes to the enhancement of the external insulation system. Moving forward, we plan to gather construction images of various external insulation methods to refine the image segmentation model's performance and develop a model capable of automatically monitoring scenarios with a considerable number of insulation materials in the image.

This paper investigated the method to predict a thermal response of internal insulation in a solid rocket motor considering both thermal decomposition and ablation. Changes in properties due to the thermal decomposition, swelling of char layer and movement of decomposition gases inside the material were considered during a modeling. And radiative/convective heat flux from the exhaust gas were applied as boundary conditions, while the chemical ablation of the material surface is modeled with algebraic equations. Test SRM with thermocouples was solved for a validation purpose. The results showed that predicted temperatures have identical trends and values compared to the experimental values. And an error of predicted thermal destruction depth was around 0.1 mm.
Hydraulic-mechanical (H-M) coupled numerical modeling was used to evaluate the evolution of hydrogeological properties in response to the installation and expansion of a borehole. A domain with a discrete fracture network was adopted for discontinuum modeling to simulate changes in fracture apertures. Comparison with real hydraulic test data shows that the effects of principal stress direction and expansion of borehole diameter were reasonably simulated by H-M coupled numerical modeling. The modeling confirmed that aperture changes depended on the principal stress direction, with an increase in aperture size due to vertical displacement being the dominant effect. A concentration of shear dilation around the borehole had an additional, subsidiary, effect on the hydrogeological evolution. These results show that the permeability of fractured rock can be increased by changing the hydraulic properties of a fracture through stress redistribution caused by the installation and expansion of a borehole.
The IIS(Internal Insulation System) is applied in most Korean apartment buildings which are the most common type of residential buildings. Consequently, there are many cases in which the layer of insulation is disconnected by the structural components at the wall-slab and wall-wall joints in the envelope. These joints become thermal bridges where the risk of heat loss increases. It is expected that the EIFS(External Insulation and Finish System) is the solution to this problem. In this study, annual heating and cooling loads of apartment buildings with IIS and EIFS were compared using Design Builder program in order to evaluate the thermal storage effect of EIFS where the concrete thermal mass is located inside of the insulation material. As results, the apartment building with EIFS could reduce annual heating and cooling loads by 2.4% and 4.1%, respectively.

This paper reports a fundamental study of temperature characteristics of a solar pond with an insulation layer. Further, these characteristics were compared with those of a solar pond without the insulation layer. The governing equation was discretized via finite difference method. The governing equations are two-dimensional unsteady-state second-order partial differential equations. The conclusions of the study are as follows: 1) If the depth of the solar pond was increased, the desired effect of increase in temperature was not produced because the amount of solar insolation received by the bottom of the solar pond decreased. 2) As the temperature of the soil during winter is higher than the temperature of the water in a solar pond, heat was transferred from the soil to the solar pond. 3) For the case of the solar pond with insulation layer, it was estimated that the dependence rate of solar energy was 83.3% and that of the boiler was 16.7%.
Sloshing impact loads on liquefied natural gas (LNG) carr iers are the main issue of damage to the insulation system in LNG cargo containment system (LNG CCS). The damage to the insulation system would be fatal in maintaining a temperature-savings environment in LNG CCS. The typical method is to enhance the insulation materials that can maintain a constant cryogenic temperature. Insulation materials consist of polyurethane foam and plywood, an adhesive for bonding these two materials. This study intends to improve the absorption energy of the material when the impact load is applied by creating a glass bubble/epoxy composite resin as part of the insulation. The experimental scenarios consider the effect of temperature ($20^{\circ}C$, $-163^{\circ}C$), glass bubble weight fraction in epoxy resin through free fall experiments. Experiments have shown that if the glass bubble additive reaches 20 wt.%, the cryogenic absorption energy is a maximum performance and that 0 wt.% has a maximum ambient absorption energy. However, the agglomeration has been occurred due to deterioration of the stirring performance if weight fraction was 20 wt.% and the result of 0 wt.% have been revealed that ambient absorption energy is significantly lower.
Earthquake can change underground stress condition around the hypocenter and affect the fracture systems of the rocks. In Korea, the M5.8 Gyeongju earthquake on September 12, 2016 and M5.4 Pohang earthquake on November 15, 2017 occurred inside the Yangsan fault zone and possibly affected the fracture systems in the Yangsan fault zone and nearby rock masses. In this study, the characteristics of the fracture system (fracture orientation, number of the fractures, fracture spacing and aperture, dip angle, fracture density along depth, and relative rock strength) of the rocks in the low/intermediate level radioactive waste repository site located in the coastal area of the East Sea are analyzed by the impact of the Gyeongju and Pohang earthquakes using acoustic televiewer data taken from the boreholes at the radioactive waste repository site in 2005 and 2018. As a result of acoustic televiewer logging analysis, the fracture numbers, fracture aperture, and fracture density along depth overall increased in 2018 comparing to those in 2005. This increase tendency may be due to changes in the fracture system due to the impact of the earthquakes, or due to weathering of the wall of the boreholes for a long period longer than 10 years after the installation of the boreholes in 2005. In the borehole KB-14, on the whole, the orientation of the fractures and the average fracture spacing are slightly different between 2005 and 2018, while dip angle and relative rock strength in 2005 and 2018 are similar each other.
