Lead Isotope Analysis of Bronze Artefacts Excavated from Inyongsaji Site (납동위원소비 분석을 활용한 인용사지 출토 청동기의 원료 산지 연구)

  • Chemical and Pb isotope analysis were performed in order to determine the origin of bronze artefacts excavated from the Inyongsaji site in South Korea. The result of ICP-MS shows that they are tin bronzes in which lead was not intentionally added during production. Pb isotope data analyzed by TIMS are plotted in the southern region of Korea and China of the distribution map drawn by Mabuchi(1985). On the other hand, the identical isotope data are plotted in the Taebaek basin and the Olcheon metamorphic belt correspondent to zone2 and zone3 respectively. It is believed that the isotope data on the tin bronzes which have very low lead content can be used to trace the origin of copper ore rather than those of either lead or tin ore. Pb istope analysis allows diverse interpretation as it can be applied to any object containing trace amounts of lead. In addition, accumulation of isotope data as well as further studies will improve reliability of the provenance studies.

Distribution and Sources of Pb in Southern East/Japan Sea Sediments using Pb isotopes (동해 남부 해역 퇴적물에서 Pb동위원소를 이용한 Pb의 기원 추적 연구)

  • In order to identify the Pb pollution and its sources in continental shelf and slope areas, Pb concentration and Pb isotope ratios ($^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb\;and\;^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$) were determined far 6 box corer sediments collected from the southern East/japan Sea. Pb concentration, and $^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb\;and\;^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$ ratios were constant at around $25\pm5 ppm$ and 0.842 and 2.092 from 1700 to 1930 year, respectively and increased steadily up to $40\pm5 ppm$ and 0.867 and 2.123 at the beginning of 1990s', respectively. The increase of concentration and isotope ratios in the labile fraction (leached by 2M HC1+0.5M $HNO_3$) explains their increase in bulk sediments, while Pb concentration and isotope ratios in the residual fraction were nearly constant during 300yrs. Temporal variation of Pb isotope ratios was explained by simple two end-members mixing of geo-genic and anthropogenic sources because isotope ratios and the inverse of Pb concentration showed the good linear relationships. Using Pb isotope ratios, we can constrain two Pb sources in the study area. The one is atmospheric particulates, compared with mean values of isotope ratios in atmospheric particulates collected at Jeju and Oki ;stands, based on the history of Pb emmission in Korea and China, and judged by oceanographic processes capable of homogenizing many sources. The other is local sources related to iron mills, refineries of Pb ore and of petroleum located at the coast of the study area. Isotope ratios of anthropogenic Pb can be estimated using two end-members mixing equation and were $0.879\pm0.005\;and\;2.144\pm0.008$ before 1950s' while they increased up to $0.900\pm0.008\;and\;2.162\pm0.011$ after 1980s', respectively.

Exploration for the Carlin-type Gold Deposits and Its Potential to Korea (칼린형 금광상 탐사와 국내 적용성 연구)

  • Abstract Based onthe characteristics of Carlin-type gold deposit in Nevada district, a potential in Korea is evaluated to the Yemi area where is structurally controlled by folds and trust fault. The fault of high angles are combined with a more permeable rocks such as the Yemi breccia and laminated silty limestone. The pattern of enrichment factors for Tl, Sb, As, Ag, Pb, Zn, Cu, Mo and W of limestones in the southern area are geochemically similar with those reported from the Carlin-type Bold deposit. Moreover, the oxygen and carbon isotopes show a hydrothermal alteration is widely developed in this area. According to the result of geophysical interpretation, stable isotope, alteration mineralogy, geochemical study, and geological structure, this mineralized zone may be extended to the M direction, so a detailed systematic exploration is required to identify this alteration zone.

  • 대부분의 국내 다목적 댐은 유역면적이 넓고 강우기 집중강우로 인하여 유입되는 입자성 물질이 상당히 많은 편이며, 영양염의 증가로 인하여 저수지내부에서 발생되는 입자성 물질도 많다. 이로 인하여 호소에는 외부에서 유입된 무기$\cdot$유기성 입자와 내부 생성된 유기성 물질들이 장기간 축적되어 저수지 용량이 줄어든다. 본 연구에서는 저수지 퇴적물 상태를 탐사하는 효율적인 조사기법을 제시하고자 한다. 퇴적물 탐사기법에는 탄성파탐사 등을 이용하는 간접적인 방법과 코아를 이용하는 직접적인 방법, 퇴적층 동위원소 분석 기법 등이 있으며, 이러한 기법에 대한 기본원리 및 특성, 효용성 등을 평가하고 현장에 적합한 방법을 실제 적용하였다. 퇴적물 분포를 조사하기 위하여 먼저 다중빔(MBES)을 이용한 정밀 지형조사를 실시하였으며 이를 통하여 호저지형의 특징을 간접적으로 평가할 수 있었다. 직접적인 조사방법으로 gravity corer를 사용하여 몇 개의 지점을 sampling하였으며, 잠수부가 직접 핸드코아링를 실시하여 퇴적층을 측정하였다. 16지점에서 실시한Gravity core 결과 세 곳의 조사 정점에서 최대 70cm 두께의 퇴적층이 중력식 시추기에 의해 획득되었으며 다른 정점에서는 50cm, 20cm가 시추되었고 그 나머지 지점에서는 퇴적물이 채취되지 않았다. 이는 퇴적층이 얇아 코아가 쓰러지거나 시료채취가 되지 않은 것으로 판단되었다. 잠수부가 hand corer를 이용한 시료 채취시에 채취된 시료의 퇴적층은 각 지점별로 덕치리 25cm, 경계지점 25cm, 우산리 지점 45cm로 조사되었다. 납-210(반감기 22.3년)을 이용하여 최근에 형성된 주암댐 호수저 퇴적물 중 퇴적작용 이후 교란을 받지 않은 지역의 시추 시료를 대상으로 퇴적속도를 구하였다. 주암호에서 취한 코아퇴적물 시료는 현장에서 냉동하여 실험실에서 약 2cm 간격으로 절단하여 절단체 별로 동위원소 분석을 실시하였다. $^{210}Pb$의 농도는 grand-daughter인 $^{210}Po$를 측정함 후 감마분석에 의하여 구하였다. CF:CS 연령모델을 적용한 결과 깊이에 따른 supported $^{210}Pb$와 퇴적 속도는 0.91cm/year 인 것으로 산정 되었다.

Chemical Composition and Lead Isotope Ratio of Poong-Tag(Wind Bell) from Winggyeong Site, Cyeongju (경주 왕경지구 금동풍탁(金銅風鐸)의 성분조성과 납동위원소비)

  • The chemical compositions and lead isotope ratio of Poong-Tag(wind bell) bell excavated from Wanggyeong site, Gyeongju have analyzed by ICP and TIMS. The analysis result of chemical composition of Poong-Tag shows that it consists of 92:4 ratio of Cu:Sn. Other 8 minor elements(Pb, Zn, Fe, Ag, Ni, As, Sb and Co) show the concentration of below 0.2% respectively. This result means that Poong-Tag have made using highly purified Cu and Sn ore. For the study of provenance of raw material with the lead isotope ratio, the origin of the raw material of Poong-Tag can not be presumed owing to beyond the scope. The observation result of microstructure of Poong-Tag show the dendrite structure made through casting process. The chemical composition, microstructure, and lead isotope ratio of Poong-Tag excavated from Wanggyeong site, Gyeongju can be used as fundamental data to compare with other Poong-Tag of different regions and periods.

Determination of Lead in Steels by Hydride generation-Inductively Coupled Plama/Mass Spectrometry (수소화물 발생-유도결합플라스마 질량분석법에 의한 철강 중의 납의 정량)

  • An analytical method has been developed which determines lead in steel samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with sample introduction by the hydride generation. The lead hydride is not stable and requires and oxidant for the oxidation into metastable Pb(IV) before reduction to $PbH_4$ with $NaBH_4$. A study was carried out to find and optimum lead hydride generation condition for a sample solution with more than $1000{\mu}g/mL$ Fe matrix. $K_2Cr_2O_7$ was found to work as an efficient oxidant when more than $10{\mu}g/mL$ Fe matrix was present. Lactic acid was used with the oxidant as a complexing agent of the metastable Pb(IV) to enhance sensitivity. Optimum concentrations of the sample acidity, oxidant and lactic acid were different depending on the matrix concentration. The isotope dilution method was employed for the quantitation of lead. The determined Pb concentrations of the NIST steel SRM 361 and 362 were in good agreement with the certified values within the uncertainty range.

  • In accordance with the KRR-1 & 2 decommissioning project, the decontamination and dismantling activities of the KRR-2 auxiliary facilities, radioisotope production facilities, were completed from Aug 2001 to Dec 2002. The auxiliary facilities were composed of the concrete hot-cell, lead hot-cells and several laboratories for the radioisotope production. The dismantling objects are home hoods, experimental desks, sinks, and contaminated inner facilities. For the purpose of the safe decommissioning activity, the method statements and working procedures were set up. The manpower of the total 20,933 man-hour was required and several dismantling equipments were also. The maximum surface contamination is: 9.24 Bq/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in removable contamination and 350,000 cpm in fixed contamination. The total amount of 62.146 Ton was raised as dismantled waste with kinds of the concretes, wood, steels, etc. The collective dose was evaluated as 0.33 mam-mSv during this period.

  • Isotope-dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine trace amounts of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn in sediment. Sediment samples were dissolved by microwave digestion with addition of mixed acid ($HNO_3$, HF and $HClO_4$). Lead was determined after separation of alkaline and alkaline earth metals by an ammonium pyrrolidenedithiocarbarmate (APDC) solvent extraction. The other elements were determined after separation of iron, tin and titanium by hydroxide precipitation. Recovery efficiency of the analyte elements was not satisfactory, but most of matrix elements causing the isobaric interference could be effectively eliminated by the separation. Good agreement was achieved with the certified values in the analysis of the two sediment reference materials.

  • Seungja Chongtong is a small korean tubular arm that made by particular arm-making way imitating a chinese arm. This study organizes scientific analysis results with results of inscriptions reading of Seungja Chongtong in the Central museum of Kyunghee University. Three of Seungja Chongtongs are made with Cu-Sn-Pb ternary alloy which is not much differ in contents and the results of microstructure analysis of Seungja Chongtong 1 which could investigate a microstructure among the Chongtongs were found out that Seungja Chongtong is made by general casting, with no evidences of an additional heat-treatment and tempering. Furthermore, in results of lead isotope ratio analysis to find out a source of lead using during the production of Seungja Chongtong, It seems that Seungja Chongtong is made with a lead ore from northern Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and southern Gangwon-do Province called Korea southern zone 2 area.

The Study on Material Characteristics of the By-Products of the Production of Bronze during the Goryeo Dynasty Excavated from the Sinpung Site, Wanju, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea (완주 신풍유적 출토 고려시대 청동생산 부산물의 재료학적 특성)

  • This study interpreted the characteristics of the site and provenance of raw material by performing material characteristics analysis of the slags and tuyeres excavated from the Sinpung site in Wanju, Jeollabuk-do. The major chemical compositions suggested that the slags and tuyeres were created when Cu-Sn-Pb was alloyed. Metal microscope and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer analyses revealed that the slags and tuyeres were by-products formed in the alloying process. This alloy, created by adding galena to copper and tin ingots, was an intermediary material used in making the finished products. According to the lead isotope ratio analysis result, slags could be made using galena of the southern Zone III region of Korea. Based on the decomposition of mica group minerals and the formation of mullite detected through X-ray diffraction analysis, it is possible to conclude that the tuyeres operated at approximately 1,000℃ as, the mullite was detected on the outside of the tuyeres.
