Type of Gender Role Identity in Older Korean Men (남성노인의 성역할정체감 유형 연구)

  • Gender role identity is a key subject toward adaptation in later life. In this paper, we tried to understand the specific types and characteristics of gender role identity in view of older men. The research collected and examined 40 representative descriptions representing gender role identity, including 20 for masculinity and 20 for femininity from 40 older men. We obtained four types of gender role identity of older men from this research. "Powerful-expressive type" is energetic and reveals his brave and dominant tendency when they are working. "Powerful-taciturn type" is strongly independent and has a firm conviction, but they do not express those characters and remain silent. "Powerful-paternal type" handles his work with a driving force, and has a tender character. "Paternal-caring type" finds his own worth in life by caring for his family and children, and considers others more than himself. Future research is needed to verify how the types of gender role identity are linked to psychosocial adaptive aspects, health behaviors, mental and physical health.

Alteration of masculinity Types Shown in Melodramas -From 1992 to 2012- (멜로드라마에 나타난 남성상 유형의 변화 (1992년부터 2012년까지))

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the masculinity types of the male lead appearing in melodrama genre TV series with 2005 as the borderline when we perceived the change of female types in TV drama series. To attain the goal, the paper analyzed the change of the male lead in 74 melodrama series that ranked high from 1992 till 2012 in terms of the ratings. As a result, from 2005, the types of masculinity of the male lead changed significantly. The followings deal with the details of the change: first, about the age of the male lead, those in the 30's or older increased. Second, unmarried men increased. Third, more of them saw men and women equally, and masculinity types setting no role division for men and women increased. Fourth, masculinity types of having more concern over their appearance increased. Fifth, masculinity types of relying on others when a problem occurred increased. Sixth, in relationship with others, passive masculinity types increased. There was no change in men's jobs, economic level, personality, or sexual consciousness. This study result shows that from 2005, stereotyped masculinity types shown in advanced research have disappeared a lot, and the current men image tends to show both male and female features.

A Study on the Subjective Causal Perception of Hwa-Byung among the Korean Elderly Men (한국남성노인의 화병에 대한 주관적 원인지각)

  • The aim of this study is to understand the types of subjective causal perception of Hwa-byung among the Korean elderly men and reveal the characteristics of each type. Q-methodology was used to analyze each individual participant's subjectivity on Hwa-byung. A total of 25 Korean elderly men arranger 31 pre-selected Q-statement cards on a 9-point scale, shaping the cards' pile into a normal distribution. Then, the data from the arranged cards were analyzed using the QUANL PC Program. Data analysis showed that participants perceived four situation to cause Hwa-byung: Lack of sympathetic relationships, Incompetence and misfortune of their own, Weakness due to aging, and Regrets about the past to life. The analysis of the different types will be able to provide material on how to specifically offer psychological support to the Korean elderly men.

  • 본 연구에서는 신체밀착형 의복의 유행으로 맞음새가 우수한 의복의 중요성이 부각되고 있는 20대 나성을 대상으로, Size Korea의 제 7차 인체치수조사 계측데이터를 분석하여 전신 체형의 특성을 알아보고, 전신 체형을 유형화하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 20대 전반 남성의 의복 제작에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 20대 남성의 체형은 4개로 분류되었다. 유형 1은 둘레 및 너비요인의 적재량이 높고, 몸통길이와 발목/종아리 굵기, 엉덩이처짐 요인 높이 요인의 적재량이 낮은 '짧고 굵은 몸통새다리 체형'이다. 유형 2는 어깨너비와 길이, 몸통길이의 적재량이 높고, 둘레 및 너비와 어깨처짐 요인의 적재량이 낮으며, 높이요인의 적재량이 높은 '가는 역삼각형 체형'이다. 유형 3은 발목/종아리 굵기 요인의 적재량이 높고, 높이요인, 둘레 및 너비와 몸통길이 요인의 적재량이 낮은 '짧고 가는 몸통 굵은 다리 체형'이다. 유형 4는 높이요인과 엉덩이처짐, 어깨처짐 요인의 적재량이 높고 어깨너비와 길이 요인의 적재량이 낮은 '긴 삼각형 체형'이다.

Subjectivity toward Death among HIV-Positive Men (HIV 감염인 남성의 죽음에 대한 주관성)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the attitude of Korean HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)-positive men toward death. Methods: A Q-methodology was performed with 20 HIV-positive male individuals. Participants were asked to select and answer questions among a set of 40 Q-statements using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using the PC QUANL program. Results: Participants' attitudes toward death were categorized into four types. Type I was characterized by respect for life, type II by reality orientation, type III by pain evasion and type IV religious beliefs. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an assessment tool and an intervention program for HIV-positive individuals.

Analysis of Gendered Job Sequence through Optimal Matching (최적일치법을 이용한 남녀간 직업 배열의 분석)

  • This paper analyzes job sequences of men and women using optimal matching in order to find patterns of intra-generational mobility in Korean society. Men and women differ in their job careers: men show long-lasting job sequences with few gaps, while women either have short careers or have interrupted careers with long gaps. Long gaps in men's career are limited to those cases in which men move from agricultural to other job. The results from a combination of optimal matching and cluster analysis show that men's job sequences cluster around major occupations while women's cluster in terms of sequence length. The interrupted careers characteristic of women are considered to be consequent on the burdens of house keeping and child raising together with the discrimination against women pursuing careers.

Whole body shape of middle-aged males for development of men's wear

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the direct measurement data of 40-59 year old middle-aged men from Size Korea's 7th anthropometric survey, and to identify the body shape characteristics and to type the body shape of middle-aged men. Through this, this study aimed to provide basic data necessary for the clothing patterns of middle-aged men with excellent fit. The data was SPSS Ver. 24.0 program analysis. Factors extracted six including body horizontal, vertical, shoulder, waist front length, leg thickness, and shoulder deflections. The body shape of middle-aged men was classified into three types. Type 1 had a thin body circumference, a narrow width, a low height, a short waist front length, and a thin ankle and calf. Type 2 had a high body height, a long waist front length, a normal circumference and width, a thick ankle, a calf, and a sagging shoulder. Type 3 had a large body circumference, a wide body, a wide shoulder, and a long waist front length. A prominent feature of the changes in body shape of middle-aged men is the increase in the circumference and thickness items due to abdominal protrusion and fat accumulation. Therefore, pattern design according to these physical characteristics is considered to be necessary.

  • This study examined the gender role identity within the Korean context with particular focus on how the changes within Korean society may have impacted on the gender role identities of middle-aged men. This research adapting Q methodology created a sampling distribution of P with 40 middle-aged men aged between 40-59 years old. Each of 40 Q samples were placed in a forced distribution of 9 scales. Secondary analysis of the results was then conducted by principal component factor analysis using the QUANL PC program. Middle-aged men are likely to have traditional masculinity and newly developed femininity, such as caring for others and sensitivity. This means that a consideration of these characteristics needs to understand the gender role identity of middle-aged men.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 TV드라마 출연 여성 아이돌스타의 스타 마케팅 기법과 이에 따른 수용자의 선호유형을 분석해 보는 것이다. 아이돌 스타의 TV방송 드라마 출연은 최근 유행처럼 빠르게 번지고 있다. 철저한 스타마케팅 차원에서 고려된 것이기는 하지만 남성아이돌 스타와 다르게 여성 아이돌 스타가 방송 드라마에서 차지하는 비중은 상대적으로 아직까지 매우 미약한 수준에 그치고 있다. 이는 드라마 소비계층의 차별적 요인도 있겠지만 전반적 여성 아이돌 스타에 대한 수용자들의 인식이 남성 아이돌과는 다른 방식으로 작용한다는 것을 의미하기도 하다. 따라서 본 연구는 남성 아이돌 스타와 차별화된 여성 스타에 대한 수용자 인식유형과 이에 따른 팬덤현상을 주관성 연구방법인 Q방법론을 중심으로 분석해 볼 것이다.

Latent Profile Analysis of Meta-Awareness of Gender Discrimination Among Korean Young Adults: Group Differences in Gender Role Conflict, Sense of Distance from the Opposite Sex, and Support for Gender Discrimination Issues (성인초기 남녀의 성차별 메타-인식에 대한 잠재프로파일 분석과 유형별 성역할갈등, 이성과의 거리감, 성차별 논쟁에 대한 지지도 차이)

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the latent classes of meta-awareness of gender discrimination among Korean young adults using Latent Profile Analysis based on 'perceived ambivalence toward men among women', 'perceived ambivalent sexism among men', 'perceived gender(reverse-) discrimination in Korea'. After identifying the latent classes, the difference between gender role conflict, sense of distance from the opposite sex, and support for gender discrimination issues were explored among the classified groups. As a result, 3 latent classes among women and 2 latent classes among men were identified. Latent classes among women were named 'women with low sensitivity of sexism', 'women with high sensitivity of sexism' and 'women against sexism' and latent classes among men were named 'men with perception of gender equality', 'men with perception of reverse discrimination'. Types with higher levels of meta-awareness of gender discrimination were related with higher gender role conflict and higher sense of distance from the opposite sex. Among women, types with higher levels of meta-awareness of gender discrimination perceived higher levels of gender discrimination and showed more support for gender discrimination issues while among men, types with higher levels of meta-perception of gender discrimination only perceived higher levels of reverse discrimination. Based on the present findings, implications about the severe gender conflict among Korean young adults are further discussed in the article.
