  • The aerodynamic characteristics of FAST(Future Air Speed Transit) combined the body with tandem wing flying over nonplanar ground surface are investigated by using a boundary element method. To validate the present method, results of the present analysis are compared with the experiment and other numerical results. The arrangement of the tandem wing is determined to secure sufficient aero-levitation force and the stability through the analysis of the aerodynamic characteristics of the FAST. The FAST has the maximum lift characteristics when the tandem wing with lower endplate is located at the front side and the rear side of the body. The stability of the FAST can be secured by using the flaperon of the tandem wing.

  • The effects of strake planform shapes on the vortex formation, interaction, and breakdown characteristics of double-delta wings were investigated through pressure measurements of upper wing surface and off-surface flow visualization. Three different shapes of strakes were attached to a delta wing respectively to form double-delta wing configurations and tested in a medium-sized subsonic wind tunnel. The results of the pressure measurements indicated that the strake planform having a higher sweep angle generated more concentrated vortex systems at upstream locations, which, however, tended to diffuse and break down much faster at the downstream locations. It was also found from the off-surface visualization results that the cause for the vortex concentration was due to the acceleration of coiling and merging processes between the wing and strake vortices.

  • Velocity data were acquired at a series of stations in the chordwise direction above a delta wing with leading edge extension, using a triple axis hot film anemometry. Surveys normal to planform yield velocity field data at incidence angle of 24$^{\circ}$and 32$^{\circ}$at a centerline chord Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6$. Experimental results of velocity measurements of mean velocity of three components gave a confidence to quantitative investigate the vortical flow field over a LEX-delta wing with this probe. The present experiments indicated the existence of both wing and LEX vortex where the local mean axial velocity is maximum. It also shown the development of secondary vortex of opposite sign of rotating above the wing surface near the leading edge. The insertion of probe across the flow field was found to have little influence on the position of the vortex core.

  • We aimed to develop a non-clogging submersible slurry pump with two blades to replace the conventional vortex pump. To do this, we simulated the effect of parameters such as the blade angle $\beta$ and the blade-length angle $\alpha$ on pump efficiency. We used the commercial codes ANSYS CFX and BladeGen. The results showed that the best blade shape was obtained for $\beta$ = $30^{\circ}$ and that the pump efficiency was proportional to $\alpha$ in the simulated range.

  • This study was conducted to experimentally investigate the seismic retrofitting performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frames by introducing engineered cementitious composite (ECC) wing panel elements. Non-ductile RC frame tested in this study were designed and detailed for gravity loads with insufficient or no consideration to lateral loads. Therefore, Non-ductile RC frame were not satisfied on present seismic code requirements. The precast ECC wing panels were used to improve the seismic structural performance of existing non-ductile RC frame. A series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the structural performance of ECC wing panel elements alone a non-ductile RC frame strengthened by adding ECC panel elements. Failure pattern, strength, stiffness and energy dissipation characteristics of specimens were evaluated based on the test results. The test results show that both lateral strength and stiffness were significantly improved in specimen strengthened than non-ductile RC frame. It is noted that ECC wing wall elements application on non-ductile RC frame can be effective alternative on seismic retrofit of non-ductile building.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the aerodynamic characteristics of a variable span wing flying inside a channel guideway is accomplished using wind tunnel testing. A variable span wing with a NACA 0012 airfoil section was fabricated and actuated using a linear servo motor. The aerodynamic effects of 1) wing aspect ratio, 2) ground effect, and 3) the gap between the wingtip and the wing fence were investigated. It was found that both ground effect and wing fence gap increased lift. Also, the wing fence gap does not significantly affect drag. Therefore, it was found that a variable span mechanism can be used as an effective high lift device when flap use is limited.

  • The nonlinear aerodynamic analysis of wing with control surface is performed using the frequency-domain panel method. To take into consideration the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of wing an iterative decambering approach is introduced. The iterative decambering approach uses the known aerodynamic characteristics of airfoil to calculate the aerodynamic characteristics of wing. The multi-dimensional Newton iteration is used to account for the coupling between the different sections of wing. The present method is verified by showing that it produces results that are in good agreement with experiments. The present method will be useful for the analysis of aircraft in the conceptual design because the present method can calculate promptly the nonlinear aerodynamic characteristics of wing with a few computing resources.
