  • Purpose: This study was tried whether expectation of astigmatism from spherical equivalent visual acuity was possible. Methods: For 54 men and women (108 eyes) corrected to emmetropia, average age of 23.3, changes of visual acuity (5m) were measured with an increasing the powers at every ${\pm}$0.25D when the (-) axis of cross cylinder is $180^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$, respectively. Results: As the power of cross cylinder was increased, visual acuity was decreased. When the powers of cross cylinder were ${\pm}$2.50D ($180^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$) and ${\pm}$2.25D ($45^{\circ}$), visual acuity was 0.05 which is the minimum measurement possible. Conclusions: The diagram on astigmatism dealing with each spherical equivalent visual acuity was able to tabulate.

  • Purpose: This study is to predict refractive errors according to uncorrected visual acuity using uncorrected visual acuity of the first glasses wearers. Methods: For 886 children who visited an ophthalmic clinic, subjective refraction was carried out with maintain refraction (MR) and cycloplegic refraction (CR), and objective refraction was carried out using auto-refractometer. Uncorrected visual acuity and corrected visual acuity were tested using on a trial lens and a Han's visual acuity chart. Results: In correlation between with the uncorrected visual acuity and refractive the myopia was the highest (r=0.774) and followed by hyperopia (r=0.670), simple astigmatism (r=0.623), simple with-the-rule astigmatism (r=0.604)and simple against-the-rule astigmatism (r=0.508). Conclusions: There were differences in the predictions between uncorrected visual acuity and refractive error according to the types of refractive error and astigmatism.

  • We investigate the variation in the shape of confusion circle as the real amplitude distribution of incident beam in pupil area is shifted and the effect of the shift of incident beam on the astigmatism for eye. The shifted magnitudes of Incident beam are 0.0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 and the shifted direction of incident beam ${\pi}/2$. We also consider the optical system having the astigmatism which are $0.0{\lambda}$, $0.25{\lambda}$, $0.5{\lambda}$ and $0.75{\lambda}$. As the shifted magnitude of the real amplitude distribution of incident beam increases, the shape of confusion circle on the image surface transfers from the rotational symmetry to the asymmetry like ellipse and the length of the major axis for confusion circle on the Image surface increases. We know from results in this paper that the shift of the incident beam in pupil area compensates the effect of astigmatism and the real amplitude distribution of incident beam in pupil area is shifted to minimize the effect of astigmatism for eye.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the refractive state of an asian population (male: 39, female: 53) from 21 to 30 years old who visited the A optical shop at jongnogu in seoul. Methods: The visual acuity test was performed by the object and subject method. Results: Among the 184 eyes, myopia is 83.16% and emmetropia is 16.84%, respectively. As for the equivalent spheric power of myopic abnormal refractive eyes, the -m0.5Dt < spheric equivalent ${\leq}$ -2.00Dt was 40.53%, the -2.00Dt < spheric equivalent ${\leq}$ -6.00Dt was 51.63% and anything over the -6.00Dt was 7.85%. The percentages of with-the-rule, against-the-rule and oblique astigmatism among people with astigmatism were 46.67%, 35.56% and 7.77%, respectively. The average of pupillary distance in male (64.5${\pm}$2.9 mm) was greater than that in female (61.9${\pm}$2.3 mm). Conclusions: Korean opticians were provided some useful information about making up a prescription by this research.

  • Purpose: This study investigated visual acuity and refractive error in elementary schoolchildren and examined relationship between visual acuity and refractive error. Methods: Naked visual acuity and refractive error for selected 200 schoolchildren (400 eyes) of 1st, 3rd and 6th grades. Results: The refractive error in hyperopia was gradually decreased and visual acuity was increased as higher grade. The regression line of Y=2.1471X-3.1484 (F=313.9377, P<0.001) and closed inter-relationship were found between visual acuity and refractive error in myopia. The regression line equation of Y=-0.6854X+1.1764 (F=7.054, P<0.01) and closed inter-relationship were found between visual acuity and refractive error in hyperopia. The relationship between visual acuity and refractive error in astigmatism was Y=2.2509X-2.8738 (F=21.7952, P<0.001) and closed inter-relationship was found. Conclusions: Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism showed closed inter-relationship with visual acuity.

  • Purpose: In this study, the effect of lens fitting status on the contact area between spherical/aspherical RGP lens and the cornea having different astigmatic degree and corneal type was investigated for guiding the proper selection of RGP lens. Methods: Spherical and aspherical RGP lenses were applied on ninety eyes $(25.12{\pm}3.52years)$ having with-the-rule astigmatism by different fitting status. Then, their central, mid-peripheral and peripheral areas of fluorescein pattern were calculated and compared for the quantitative evaluation of the contact area between spherical/aspherical RGP lens. Results: The central and peripheral areas with the alignment fitting was significant different based on lens design. However, the central area didn't show any significant difference by lens design and corneal type when fitted in steep or flat. When analyzed by the corneal shape, both lenses with alignment and flat fitting had significant difference in central and peripheral areas. However, the central, mid-peripheral and peripheral areas with steep fitting didn't show the difference by corneal types. When analyzed by the astigmatic degree, the central and peripheral areas with alignment fitting changed proportionally to the increase of corneal astigmatism regardless of corneal shape. With steep and flat fitting, however, the central, mid-peripheral and/or peripheral areas in round- and symmetric bowtie-typed corneas showed the conflicting result when compared to those of alignment fitting when analyzed by the astigmatic degree. Conclusions: In this study, it was confirmed that the contact areas of cornea and RGP lens fitted steep and flat status were largely affected by the corneal type and corneal astigmatism rather than RGP lens fitted in alignment status. Also, this result commonly occurred in both spherical and aspherical RGP lenses.

  • Purpose: To represent the shape of toric corea in the elliptical function for the determination of curvature distribution and lacrimal thickness between cornea and contact lens when the lens is fitted. Methods: Topography measurements of corneal curvature and curvature equation derived from the assumed elliptical function were evaluated using the Excel program which included the necessary equation derived. Results: Mathematical expressions for the cornea whose ribbon shaped-topography image, in which the center does not coincide with the corneal apex, can be determined. Conclusions: For the application where the higher accuracy on the cornea is not required, such as higher order aberration, the cornea cal be expressed in the simple elliptical function.

  • When we wear contact lenses for correcting astigmatism, we often experience the axis-rotation of contact lenses that is happened in case we could not fit the axis of lens exactly or by the eyelid used to blink. In this case, because the exact correcting state becomes in the wrongly correcting state, the asthenopia is led, and the decline of eyesight can be led. For this reason, we need to know axis-rotating degrees of contact lenses. If a contact lens rotated, a residual astigmatism may be detected in the refraction examination after wearing. Using this, we developed a program that calculates the axis-rotating amount of contact lenses.
