  • Eggs and larval development of Chelon affinis were reared and observed in the laboratory with parent fishes obtained in the Minrak fish market Pusan on March, 1997. The spawned eggs of the species are transparent, round, separated, floated, and their diameters were varied within 0.95$\~$1.06 mm. Hatching began about 73 hours after spawning at $16.0^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were 1.72$\~$1.92 mm in total length with 19 myomeres, mouth and unopened anus, rod shape melanophores distributed in body. The larvae absorbed yolk material completely in 5 days after hatching and became postlarvae.

  • Egg development and early life history of the endangered Korean freshwater fish, Microphysogobio koreensis, was investigated to get a basic information for establishing its conservation strategy. The matured adult fishes were sampled at Imsil-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea in May 1 2012 and artificially fertilized. The fertilized eggs were spherical, separated demersal and $1.8{\pm}0.14mm$ in diameter. The hatching of the embryo began at about 29 hours after fertilization under water temperature of $23^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched pre-larvae were average $2.2{\pm}0.48mm$ in total length. At 4 days after hatching, the post-larvae were $3.6{\pm}0.55mm$ in total length and york sac was completely absorbed. At 20 days after hatching, their fin rays were formed and finally the larvae entered juvenile stage and grew up to $6.5{\pm}0.77mm$ in total length. At 60 days after hatching, the total length reached $24.4{\pm}1.71mm$, and the band patterns of he head and lateral side were similar to adult fish. Based on this study, the fertilized eggs of M. koreensis hatched more quickly and the pre-larvae length was also smaller, compared with related species.

  • Gonadal development, fertilization and egg development in the maternal body and reproductive cycle of ovoviviparous rockfish, Sebastes inermis, were investigated histologically. Gonadosomatic index(GSI) of male and female were increased from September and reached maximum values in December. In the male, GSI decreased from January, but in the female maintained high values till February and decreased from March. Hepatosomatic index(HSI) was related to GSI conversely. In both sex, HSI increased from February and reached maximum in August as the gonad were degenerating and resting, and began to decrease from September as gonad were glowing. This ovoviviparous rockfish copulates in December. Fertilization with sperms maintained between ovulated oocytes in the ovary occurs in January mainly. Egg development in the ovarian cavity and discharging of hatched preiarva occurs from January to February. The reproductive cycle includes the successive stages: Growing(September), Mature (October-November), Ripe and Fertilization(Decembr-Janua), Egg development and Discharging of hatched larva(January-February), Degeneration and Resting(February-August). According to the frequency distribution of egg diameter and histological observation, the ovoviviparous rockfish discharged the prelarva at a time in a spawning season. The sexual maturation is first attained at 2 ages. All females and males reaches first maturity at body length of 17.1cm and 15.1cm respectively. The mean number of the embryos increased with the increase of the total length of female.

  • We investigated egg collection and the effects of water temperature (4, 7, 10, 13 and $16^{\circ}C$) on egg development, hatching and larval growth of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus under laboratory conditions. Fertilized eggs were round in shape ($1.01{\pm}0.03\;cm$) and adhesive to nylon nets. Fertilization rate was 68% by wet method. The time of egg development was negatively proportional to water temperature with the range of $4^{\circ}C$ to $13^{\circ}C$. Eggs hatched only at $7^{\circ}C$ after 288 hours of fertilization and $10^{\circ}C$ after 192 hours. Hatching rate was highest as 65% at $7^{\circ}C$ followed by $34.4^{\circ}C$ at $10^{\circ}C$. Survival rate was 18.3% at $7^{\circ}C$ and 5.2% at $10^{\circ}C$.

  • The fertilized eggs were obtained from mature adult slime flounder Microstomus achne to determine the water temperature effect on egg development. The lowest water temperature for the flounder egg development was $0.4^{\circ}C$ on average. The temperature-dependent duration from fertilization to hatching ranged 86.5 to 296.7 hours at $9\sim21^{\circ}C$ with an accelerated development at higher temperature. Agreeable hatching rates, 95.8~97.0%, were obtained at $12\sim18^{\circ}C$, while lower at both extremes, 86.9% at $9^{\circ}C$ and 9.3% at $21^{\circ}C$. The highest water temperature, $24^{\circ}C$, had the life of the fertilized eggs confined within 24 hours. Water temperature was a parameter that induced an abnormal egg development: with abnormalities of 88.3% at $21^{\circ}C$, 2.1% at $9^{\circ}C$ (P<0.05), and 0.4~0.8% at $12\sim18^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of water temperature on spawning induction, larval development, spat settling and its growth of the cockle shell, Fulvia mutica, were investigated to obtain the basic data for effective seed production. The eggs, which were randomly divided into 6 groups of water temperatures of 14, 17, 20, 23, 26 and $29^{\circ}C$, were transferred into 1 L beaker, respectively. The relationships between the water temperature and the required time (1/h, hour) by each egg developmental stage were calculated. Biological minimum water temperature and the cumulative water temperature until egg development of the veliger stage were calculated to be $0.1^{\circ}C$ and $397.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The optimal water temperature for developmental bioassay of F. mutica was clarified to be $23^{\circ}C$. The required time for the embryo to become veliger larvae was 20 hours at $23^{\circ}C$.

  • We investigated to elucidate the early life history of siberian stone loach, Barbatula nuda (Pisces: Nemacheilidae). Adult fish were collected using net in the Sangcheoncheon Stream, Cheongpyeong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, 26th April 2020. HCG 10 IU/g was injected to female and male fish and fertilized by dry method in the laboratory. The number of eggs of B. nuda was 1,308±293 (TL: 70.64~79.24 mm), and the egg color was yellowish grey. Fertilized eggs measured 1.13±0.01 mm (n=10) in diameter and showed adhesion. The fertilized eggs started hatching after 104 hours. At the time of egg development, the 15℃ group showed an average hatching rate of 80.1±1.2% and the 20℃ group showed 61.5±6.8%, so the 15℃ group was suitable (p<0.05). Newly hatched larva an average were 3.12±0.06 mm (n=10) in total length. At 4 days after hatching, the total length was 4.89±0.09 mm (n=10), and feeding began with the mouth and anus opened, and entered to preflexion larvae stage. At 21 days after hatching, the total length was 10.98±0.40 mm (n=10), and the distal part of the notochord was bent to 45°, and entered to postflexion larvae stage At 26 days after hatching, the total length was 13.47±0.37 mm (n=10), and entered the juvenile stage.
