An experiment was carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils on the condition of uniform heat flux. The present work was conducted for various ranges for Dean number(1794~1321), Prandtl number (2.5~4.5), curvature ratio parameters (22~60). Heat transfer to steady viscous flow in coiled tubes of circular cross section was studied for fully developed velocity and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of uniform heat flux. The peripherally local Nusselt number correlated as a function of Dean and Prandtl numbers. We studied the flow in heat coiled tubes under the influence of both centrifugal and buoyancy forces in order to gain insight into the flow pattern. In the present study, we obtained three emperical formulas, $Nu_v=0.0231Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.13}$ (vertical) $Nu_c=0.0241Re^{0.86}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.08}$ (corrugated) $Nu_h=0.0227Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.09}$ (horizontal).

Heat transfer performance are studied for the turbulent flow of water in 3 smooth tube coils having ratios of coil to tube diameter of 16, 21 and 27, and a corrugated-coiled tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 29, for Reynolds numbers from 8000 to 60000 and is also compared with the limited results available to data. The experiments are carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils under the condition of uniform heat flux. This work is limited 0 tube coils of R/a between 10 and 30. The tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 27 among the 3 smooth tube coils shows the best heat transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube best transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube with a similar curvature ratio is better for a corrugated-coiled tube(R/a=17) than for a smooth coiled tube(R/a=16). An empirical relation which correlates most of the data within $\pm$25% was also developed. Test result shows that the Nusselt number is found to be affected by a secondary flow due to curvature.

The superheater and reheater tubes of a heavy-load fossil power plant boiler can be damaged by overheating, and therefore, the degree of overheating is assessed by measuring the oxide scale thickness inside the tube during outages. The tube temperature prediction from the oxide scale thickness measurement is necessarily accompanied by destructive tube sampling, and the result of tube temperature prediction cannot be expected to be accurate unless the selection of the overheated point is precise and the initial-operation tube temperature has been obtained. In contrast, if the tube temperature is to be predicted analytically, considerable effort (to carry out the analysis of combustion, radiation, convection heat transfer, and turbulence fluid dynamics of the gas outside the tube) is required. In addition, in the case of analytical tube temperature prediction, load changes, variations in the fuel composition, and operation mode changes are hardly considered, thus impeding the continuous monitoring of the tube temperature. This paper proposes a method for the short-term prediction of tube temperature; the method involves the use of boiler operation information and flow-network-analysis-based tube heat flux. This method can help in high-temperaturedamage monitoring when it is integrated with a practical tube-damage-assessment method such as the Larson-Miller Parameter.
Pipe cooling method is widely used for reduction of hydration heat and control of cracking in mass concrete structures. However, in order to effectively apply pipe cooling systems to concrete structures, the coefficient of flow convection relating the thermal transfer between inner stream of pipe and concrete must be estimated. In this study, a device measuring the coefficient of flow convection was developed. Since a variation of thermal distribution caused by pipe cooling has a direct effect on internal forced flows, the developed testing device is based on the internal forced flow concept. Influencing factors on the coefficient of flow convection are mainly flow velocity, pipe diameter and thickness, and pipe material. Using experimental results from the developed device, the coefficient of flow convection was calculated. Finally, a general prediction model was proposed by theoretical procedures. The proposed prediction model is able to estimate the coefficient of flow convection with flow velocity and material properties of pipe. From comparison with experimental results, the coefficient of flow convection by this model was well agreed with those by experimental results.

The cold eddies around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea were identified from satellite altimeter sea level data using the Winding-Angle method from 1993 to 2015. Among the cold eddies, the Dokdo Cold Eddies (DCEs), which were formed at the first meandering trough of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and were pinched off to the southwest from the eastward flow, were classified and their migration patterns were analyzed. The vertical structures of water temperature, salinity, and flow velocity near the DCE center were also examined using numerical simulation and observation data provided by the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model and the National Institute of Fisheries Science, respectively. A total of 112 DCEs were generated for 23 years. Of these, 39 DCEs migrated westward and arrived off the east coast of Korea. The average travel distance was 250.9 km, the average lifespan was 93 days, and the average travel speed was 3.5 cm/s. The other 73 DCEs had moved to the east or had hovered around the generated location until they disappeared. At 50-100 m depth under the DCE, water temperature and salinity (T < $5^{\circ}C$, S < 34.1) were lower than those of ambient water and isotherms made a dome shape. Current faster than 10 cm/s circulates counterclockwise from the surface to 300 m depth at 38 km away from the center of DCE. After the EKWC separates from the coast, it flows eastward and starts to meander near Ulleungdo. The first trough of the meander in the east of Ulleungdo is pushed deep into the southwest and forms a cold eddy (DCE), which is shed from the meander in the south of Ulleungdo. While a DCE moves westward, it circumvents the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) clockwise and follows U shape path toward the east coast of Korea. When the DCE arrives near the coast, the EKWC separates from the coast at the south of DCE and circumvents the DCE. As the DCE near the coast weakens and extinguishes about 30 days later after the arrival, the EKWC flows northward along the coast recovering its original path. The DCE steadily transports heat and salt from the north to the south, which helps to form a cold water region in the southwest of the Ulleung Basin and brings positive vorticity to change the separation latitude and path of the EKWC. Some of the DCEs moving to the west were merged into a coastal cold eddy to form a wide cold water region in the west of Ulleung Basin and to create a elongated anticlockwise circulation, which separated the UWE in the north from the EKWC in the south.

The surface roughness and heat transfer enhancement devices are known to increase the performance of a flat plate soar collector. This study includes the experiments on the effect of the several heat transfer enhancement devices inserted in duct to simulate the flat-plate solar collector. Experiment was basically at a constant heat flux on the upper duct wall. Inserted heat transfer enhancement devices are Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$, Chamfered rib $20^{\circ}$, Rib & Groove and Rib & Dimple. Reynolds number is in the range of 2,300 to 22,000 which corresponds to turbulent regime. With the heat transfer enhancement devices, heat transfer would increase by the secondary flow and the increase of the heat transfer area. Pressure drop also increases with the insertion of the enhancement devices. Rib & Dimple model is the best in heat transfer enhancement, however, Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$ model is the lowest in the pressure drop. Considering the heat transfer enhancement simultaneously with low pressure drop increase, performance factor was the best for the Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$.

A three dimensional numerical simulation of laminar flow and heat transfer in fully developed curved pipe flow has been performed to study the effects of Dean number and pipe curvature on the flow and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of axially uniform wall heat flux. The Reynolds number under consideration ranges from 100 to 4000, and the Prandtl number is 0.71. The curvature ratios are 0.01, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1. The axial velocity and temperature profiles and the local Nusselt number obtained from the present study are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of pipe curvature on the flow and heat transfer, the resistance coefficients and heat transfer coefficients are computed and compared with the results of the previous theoretical and experimental studies. The averaged Nusselt number is correlated with Dean and Prandtl numbers. Furthermore, the critical Reynolds number for transition to turbulent flow is observed to depend upon the curvature ratio.

Numerical predictions of a fully developed turbulent flow through a square duct ($30mm{\times}30mm$) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape plus interrupted ribs are respectively conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and flow patterns. A rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/$D_h$) of 0.067 and a lengthto-hydraulic diameter(L/$D_h$) of 30 are considered at Reynolds number ranging 8,900 to 29,000. The interrupted ribs are axially arranged on the bottom wall. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 28 mm, length of 900 mm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite walls of the square channel. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and significant improvements can be achieved with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs.
In this study, CFD computer simulations by FDS are carried out in order to confirm the performance of the combined operation of both sprinkler system and smoke curtain of 0.54 m depth installed for cooling and blocking the smoke which propagates beneath the sloped ceiling of a stairway corridor of which dimensions are 17.92 m long, 4.00 m wide, and 6.12 m high. It is shown that the response time of sprinklers decreases with fire size and it increases more about 1.1 second in case without smoke curtain than in case with smoke curtain, that the time of smoke transport from the fire source to the stairway outlet decreases considerably with fire size, and that the delay effect of smoke transport is not related to the sprinkler system, whether it is operated or not. This study shows that the combined operation of both sprinkler system and smoke curtain is very effective in smoke cooling, but it is a little for effect on smoke blockage. Although the hazard of skin burn due to radiative heat flux from hot smoke layer is decreased by spray cooling effect, the hazard of smoke suffocation and the weakening of visibility is increased by smoke downdrag and the turbulence of smoke-air mixing due to water spray. These conditions may result in preventing occupants from going out of the stairway during evacuation.

Oceanic fronts, which are areas where sea water with different properties meet in the ocean, play an important role in controlling weather and climate change through air-sea interactions and marine dynamics such as heat and momentum exchange and processes by which properties of sea water are mixed. Such oceanic fronts have long been described in secondary school textbooks with the term 'Jokyung water zone (JWC hereafter) or oceanic front', meaning areas where the different currents met, and were related to fishing grounds in the East Sea. However, higher education materials and marine scientists have not used this term for the past few decades; therefore, the appropriateness of the term needs to be analyzed to remove any misconceptions presented. This study analyzed 11 secondary school textbooks (5 middle school textbooks and 6 high school textbooks) based on the revised 2015 curriculum. A survey of 30 secondary school science teachers was also conducted to analyze their awareness of the problems. An analysis of the textbook contents related to the JWC and fishing grounds found several errors and misconceptions that did not correspond with scientific facts. Although the textbooks mainly uses the concept of the JWC to represent the meeting of cold and warm currents, it would be reasonable to replace it with the more comprehensive term 'oceanic front', which would indicate an area where different properties of sea water-such as its temperature, salinity, density, and velocity-interact. In the textbooks, seasonal changes in the fishing grounds are linked to seasonal changes in the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC), which moves southwards in winter and northwards in summer; this is the complete opposite of previous scientific knowledge, which describes it strengthening in summer. Fishing grounds are not limited to narrow coastal zones; they are widespread throughout the East Sea. The results of the survey of teachers demonstrated that this misconception has persisted for decades. This study emphasized the importance of using scientific knowledge to correct misconceptions related to the JWC, fishing grounds, and the NKCC and addressed the importance of transferring procedures to the curriculum. It is expected that the conclusions of this study will have an important role on textbook revision and teacher education in the future.
