  • The backward-facing step (BFS) is a benchmark geometry for analyzing flow separation occurred at the edge and resulting development of shear layer and recirculation zone that are occupied by turbulent flow. It is important to accurately reproduce and analyze the mean flow and turbulence statistics of such flows to design physically stable and performance assurance structure. We carried out 3D RANS computations with widely used, two representative turbulence models, k-ω SST and RNG k-ε, to reproduce BFS flow at the Reynolds number of 23,000 and the Froude number of 0.22. The performance of RANS computations is evaluated by comparing numerical results with an experimental measurement. Both RANS computations with two turbulence models appear to reasonably well reproduce mean flow in the shear layer and recirculation zone, while RNG k-ε computation results in about 5% larger velocity between the outer edge of boundary layer and the free surface above the recirculation zone than k-ω SST computation and experiment. Both turbulence models underestimate the shear stress distribution experimentally observed just downstream of the sharp edge of BFS, while shear stresses computed in the boundary layer downstream of reattachment point are agree reasonably well with experimental measurement. RNG k-ε modeling reproduces better shear stress distribution along the bottom boundary layer, but overestimates shear shear stress in the approaching boundary layer and above the bottom boundary layer downstream of the BFS.

  • The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.

  • To investigate the flame dynamics in an annular combustor with single swirl injector, a 3D large-eddy simulation (LES) and a level-set flamelet turbulent combustion model have been implemented. The LM6000 developed by GEAE has been used as the combustor of concern and boundary conditions are based on experimental data. The strong central toroidal recirculation zone induced by the volume expansion of the combustion gas and the vortex breakdown continuously occurred through the procession of the vortex with decreasing strength, are observed.

하이브리드 모델로는 벽에 인접한 격자의 해상도에 상대적으로 민감하지 않은 SST(shear-stress transport) 난류 모델을 이용하는 DES(detached-eddy simulation) 기법을 적용하였다.

  • This research has been proceeded over the transition region(H/B=10) of two-dimensional impinging air jet system, in which square rods has been set up in front of heating surface in order to increase heat transfer. The objective of this research was to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and air flow, in cases the clearance from rods to heating surface(C=1, 2, 4, 6 mm) and the width of rods(W=4, 6, 8 mm) changed. And this research compared the above with the experimentation without rods. As result, heat transfer performance was best under the condition of C=1 mm, and as the width is 8 mm, it is largely influenced by eddies and acceleration in case width of rods changed.

  • We developed a general purpose program for the analysis of flows in the combustor with recirculating flow regime and simulated the flows. The program uses non-staggered grids based on finite volume method and the primitive variables are cartesian velocities. The combustion model is irreversible one step reaction with infinite chemistry The Favre averaged governing equations are considered and the clipped gaussian distribution is considered as a probability density function of the conserved scalar. We calculated turbulent diffusion flame with recirculating flow regime. Simulation shows two recirculating regions like experimental results. Velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, temperature and concentration distribution in simulation agree well with experimental data.

  • The optimum design of Hanyang low speed wind tunnel has been performed to augment flow uniformity and to reduce turbulence intensity of wind tunnel test section have to be known for reliability of wind tunnel test. The non-uniformity and turbulence intensity of Hanyang low speed wind tunnel were measured with Pilot tube and X-type hot-wire probe at various wind speeds. As the results, the non-uniformity decreases as the wind speed increases. The non-uniformity is relatively high in the proximity of the diffuser. The turbulence intensity is a little higher than design requirement in the middle of the test section.

  • Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been conducted to insight interaction effects of turbulent flow and chemical reaction of a lean-Premixed swirl combustor. The unsteady turbulent flame is carefully simulated so that the motion of flow and flame can be characterized in detail. Fuel lumps escaping from the primary combustion zone move downstream and consequently produce local hot spots conveying large vortical structures in the azimuthal direction. The correlation between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release is examined by the spatial and temporal Rayleigh parameter.

  • This paper investigates the impacts of turbulent anisotropy on the mean flow and turbulence structures in vegetated open-channel flows. The Reynolds stress model, which is an anisotropic turbulence model, is used for the turbulence closure. Plain open-channel flows and vegetated flows with emergent and submerged plants are simulated. Computed profiles of the mean velocity and turbulence structures are compared with measured data available in the literature. Comparisons are also made with the predictions by the k-$\epsilon$ model and by the algebraic stress model. For plain open-channel flows and open-channel flows with emergent vegetation, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles by isotropic and anisotropic turbulence models were hardly distinguished and they agreed well with measured data. This means that the mean flow and Reynolds stress is hardly affected by anisotropy of turbulence. However, anisotropy of turbulence due to the damping effect near the bottom and free surface is successfully simulated only by the Reynolds stress model. In open-channel flows with submerged vegetation, anisotropy of turbulence is strengthenednear the vegetation height. The Reynolds stress model predicts the mean velocity and turbulence intensity better than the algebraic stress model or the k-$\epsilon$ model. However, above the vegetation height, the k-$\epsilon$ model overestimates the mean velocity and underestimates turbulence intensity Sediment transport capacity of vegetated open-channel flows is also investigated by using the computed profiles. It is shown that the isotropic turbulence model underestimates seriously suspended load.
