A Study on Formation Pattern of DBPs by Disinfection of Drinking Raw Water II (음용 원수의 염소소독에 의한 소독부산물 생성패턴에 관한 연구 II)

  • The formation pattern of DBPs (disinfection by-products) in raw water treated with hypochlorite, chlorine disinfectant was studied. TOC (total organic carbon), residual chlorine, turbidity and 14 DBPs in raw water from Han-river and Nakdong river during 1 ~ 14 days were determined. Total DBPs in Han river was 101.3 ng/mL (789.6 nM) after 7days and THMs (trihalomethanes) are the dominant portion of 68%. HAAs (haloacetic acids) and chloral hydrate were determined 19% and 10% respectively. In Nakdong river total DBPs was 98.4 ng/mL (678.6 nM) and dominant class was HAAs. (55.8 ng/mL, 57%) THMs(34%) and N-compounds like HANs (haloacetonitriles, 5%) and chloropicrin were increased. It may be explained that high concentration of NH4-N in Nakdong river react with chlorine produced chloramine and this formed different pattern of DBPs. As a result, total DBPs formation pattern depends on raw water and disinfectant and in generally the initial concentration of acidic HAAs was high and THMs was increased gradually.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the variations of headloss rate and of specific deposit to depths with effective size of media and configuration of filter layer during algae blooming period. 0.51mm size media was disqualified because most of headloss occurred rapidly below 5cm from surface layer however 0.91mm size media acted deep filtration more than 20cm from top, as result 0.91mm sixte media filter had 2~3 times longer filtration time than 0.51mm sixte media filter, but 0.91mm size media have break-through potentiality. multi-layer filter with 1.02mm anthracite and 0.51mm sand had large deposit volume in upper layer that could longer filtration time, moreover smaller media in lower layer that could protect break-through.

Improving Water Quality and Bacterial Characteristics during Water Treatment Process Using Biological Activated Carbons on Downstream of the Nakdong River (낙동강 하류 상수원수의 생물활성탄에 의한 수질개선 및 세균분포 특성)

  • Improvement of water quality and Investigation of bacterial characteristics have been conducted in a pilot plant using biological activated carbon (BAC) in water treatment process at the downstream of the Nakdong River. Most of water control parameters were highly improved after passing through BAC. Approximately 54% of dissolved organic carbon was removed in coal-based BAC process. Bacterial biomass and bacterial production appeared $9.8{\times}10^8 CFU/g and 7.1mg-C/m^3$.hr in coal-based BAC, respectively. Predominant bacteria species grown in BAC were identified as Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, Alcaligenes, Acinetobacter and Aeromonas species. Particularly Pseudomonas vesicularis was dominant in both coal-based and coconut-based BACs, while Pseudomonas cepacia was dominant in wood-based BAC.

  • TOC environmental standard was established to understand the pollution level accurately and to improve the water quality. It was found that the relationship between COD and TOC showed a significant coefficient($R^2$=0.639) in four lakes for drinking water located in Nakdong River basin. The relationship between COD and TOC($R^2$=0.774) was higher with respect to the elevated concentration level when the data was added. Resulting in the oxidation(C) was $62{\pm}8%$ regardless of COD concentrations. It was difficult to find a significant difference by lakes. The result showed the similar organic property in study lakes. It was necessary to evaluate the level of organic matters in consideration of characteristics and utilization of lakes to use COD data wisely until TOC data be accumulated sufficiently.

  • 강변여과는 지표수와 지하수가 각기 갖는 장점과 제약점을 상호 보완하여 수질이 양호한 상수원수를 대량 확보하기 위한 실제적 대안이다. 자연적인 여과작용에 의해 수질이 개선되는 효과가 있어 경제적이고 안정적으로 확보할 수 있지만, 장기간 취수는 지하수위의 저하를 가져 올 수 있으므로 유역의 수문분석을 통한 기저유출량 산정에 관한 연구가 필요하다. 대상지역으로는 현재 강변여과를 개발중인 창원시 대산정수장 취수장 지역이며, 대상지역의 기저유출량을 산정하기 위해 대상지역 상류에 위치한 낙동강 본포교의 낙동강 유량을 기초로 기저유출량을 산정하여 지하수 함양율을 평가하였다. 수문곡선 분리는 여러 방법 중 다른 방법보다 상대적으로 간편하고 실무에서 많이 사용되는 방법인 수평직선분리법을 사용하여 적정 취수 가능량을 산정하기 위한 최소 기저유출량을 산정하고자 한다. 이에 따라, 보유 자료 중 연 평균 최저 유출량을 보인 2008년 가을 갈수기의 시작(2008년 10월)부터 2009년 가을 갈수기의 시작(2009년 10월)까지의 자료를 분석했다. 본포교 유량 자료는 8일부터 10일 간격으로 측정되고 있기 때문에 결측치는 최인접 두 지점 사이의 선형보간법으로 보완했다. 다소 많은 양의 결측치에 대한 보정과 해당 유역의 연간 유출 특성을 파악하기 위해서 이동평균(moving average)을 적용했으며, 적용 결과 관측 주기에 해당하는 10일 이동평균 유출수문곡선이 가장 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 10일 이동평균에 의한 유출수문곡선에 의하면 상승부의 기점은 2009년 6월 12일로 나타났으며 유출량은 47.87cms로 나타났다. 따라서 총 기저유출량은 상승부 기점의 유출량으로 111일 동안 발생하는 것을 알 수 있었으며 그 총량은 약 45,900만$m^3$으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서의 결과 본포교를 유역출구로 하는 이 유역에는 임의 유출이 생기는 호우사상 시, 기저유출량은 총 유출량의 6.38%를 최소한 기대할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

Effect of pH Control, Ozonation and Coagulation on THMs Formation in Dringking Water Treatment Process of the Downstream of Nakdong River (낙동강 하류의 정수처리 공정에서 pH, 오존 및 응집이 트리할로메탄 생성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of pH control and ozonation, coagulation on trihalomethanes (THMs) formation during prechlorination of the Nakdong river water. The results showed that lower pH was reduced THMs formation during prechlorination. THMs formation of water lowered pH 9.5 to 9.0, was reduced 18.3% and lowered pH 9.0 to 8.0 was reduced 14%, lowered pH 8.0 to 7.0 was reduced 7%, lowered pH 9.5 to 8.0 was reduced 29%. A low ozone dose ($0.11{\sim}0.48mg{\cdot}O_3/DOC$) before chlorination reduced the yields of THMs (reduced 6~24% in chlorination) compared with no preozonation. Thus the low ozone dose pretreatment is relatively effective plan to reduce THMs formation during chlorination. When ozone 1.0 mg/L, Alum 40 mg/L and sulfuric acid 6 mg/L dosed, The yields of THMs formation was reduced 42% compared with only chlorination. Input of chlorine after preozonation (followed coagulation, pH control) is more effective than only decline pH at a intake station to control THMs formation in a water treatment process. When chlorine 2.5 mg/L was added before coagulation (alum 40 mg/L), THMs formation was reduced 19% by lower pH and decreased 18% by a natural organic matter (NOM) removal compared with only chlorine 2.5 mg/L addition. Because coagulation could induce simultaneously lower pH and NOM removal, THM formation concentration is more effectively lowed than decreasing pH in the Nakdong river water.

  • The contents of chloride ion, calcium and magnesium in Nagdong River water were determined at Mul Geum where the intake station for Busan city water is located. Samples were taken in spring and neap tides of every month from March 1914 to March 1975. The range and mean values of the chloride ion and total hardness were 5.12-39.4ppm, 11.9ppm; 27.8-70.8ppm, 49.5ppm respectively from March 1974 to January 1975. The highest values were found in the period of the widest tidal range of a year, from February 9 to March 9 in 1975, such as tile ranges and means of chloride ion and total hardness were 10.8-876 ppm, 89.8ppm : 48.0-407ppm, 89.9ppm. On several days of this period those concentrations were over the criteria of drinking water, 150 ppm in chloride and 300ppm in total hardness. Chloride ion concentration was increased with increasing of water level of the Nagdong River at Mul Geum. The patterns of the variations of tide level were similar to that of water level with delay of 2.5 hours in spring tides and 3 hours in neap tides.

A Study on the Correlation between Odorous Compounds, Actinomycetes and Algae in Drinking Water Source of Nakdong River (낙동강 상수원수 중 이취물질과 방선균 및 조류의 상관관계 연구)

  • We have investigated the correlation between odorous compounds and actinomycetes in drinking water source of Nakdong River in 2011. Geosmin was mainly detected in the spring and summer seasons (Mar, Aug, and Sep) and 2-MIB was mainly detected in the winter and spring seasons (Feb, Mar and May). The odorous compounds concentrations were highest on March which also overlapped with the peak of actinomycetes, geosmin and 2-MIB were detected highly in the diluted culture solution of isolated actinomycetes strains from Nakdong River. For these reasons we could confirm that odorous compounds on March and August are closely related with actinomycetes. Meanwhile, geosmin increase on September supposed to relate with Microcystis.

  • Riverbank filtration for water supply has been employed for about 150 years in developed countries. In Korea, the feasibility of riverbank filtration has been investigated since 1990's for large river basins, to find a solution to stably meet the ever-increasing demand for water. Recently, some cites in the Nak-dong River Basin have been supplying the water through riverbank filtration. This research studies the feasibility of riverbank filtration in Seoul. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which selects the most optimal alternative by hierarchically classifying various attributes and then quantifying the importance of each attribute, was applied to candidate locations for the selection of riverbank filtration site. The Kwangnaru district, which has advantages in water quality and close connectivity to the existing water purification facility, was selected as the most optimal site.

Effect of Ozone Treatment for Nakdong River Raw Water I. Efficiency of Water Treatment by Conducting Batch Test of Ozonation Experiments (낙동강 상수원수의 오존처리 효과 I. 회분식 오존처리에 의한 수처리효과)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using ozonation. for raw water, Nakdong River was used. By conducting batch ozonation test, the following results were obtained. when ozone dosage of 5mg/$\ell$was used, preozonation of raw water reduced turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC(dissolved organic carbon), UV254 absorbance, THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential) as much as 3.9NTU, 5.5mg/$\ell$, 1.15mg/$\ell$, 0.112 and 0.065mg/$\ell$, respectively. In case of postozonation of sand filtered water, water quality was also improved with decrease in turbidity, KMnO$_4$consumption, DOC, UV254 absorbance and THMFP at the amount of 0.08NTU, 2.6mg/$\ell$, 0.88mg/$\ell$, 0.042 and 0.018mg/$\ell$, respectively. On the other hand, contents of dissolved oxygen increased at the level of 1.3mg/$\ell$ after preozonation process and 1.0mg/$\ell$ after postozonation process. The effect of ozone dosage was higher than that of its contact time for the removal of the pollutants.
