Copolyeters consisted of p-oxybenzoly, naphthalene isomer and dimethyldisiloxyl group in different comonomer sequences were synthesized by solution polycondensation and characterized. The naphthalene isomers used in this study were of the 1,4 1,5, 2,6 and 2,7 naphthylene units. The inherent viscosities of the polymers were between 0.27~0.42dl/g and all of the polymers, with the exception of the 2,7-ordered copolyester, showed enantiotropic nematic behavior. Annealing the copolyesters resulted in increasing molecular weights and degree of crystallinity of crystallizable compositions. Ordered copolyesters exhibit significant differences in thermal transitions, thermal stability, crystalline properties and liquid crystallinity when compared with the properties of the corresponding radom copolyesters.

An immobilization zone can be constructed by modifying soils in the vadose zone with surfactants, which can be used to promote retardation of organic contaminants in the subsurface. Column experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of surfactants and organic contaminants in unsaturated and saturated conditions with different water contents (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). Transport and sorption of surfactant (dialkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide) in the columns containing aluminum oxide was similar under the conditions at different water contents. However, transport of a model organic compound (naphthalene) was retarded as the water content decreased by enhanced partitioning of the compound into the surfactants that were sorbed on the aluminum oxide. This suggests that the immobilization method could well be applied to vadose zone as well as to saturated zone.

The purpose of this research is to investigate how separated and reattached flow affects mass transfer, by comparing the local mass transfer characteristics on an inclined flat plate with those on a parallel flat plate. The local mass transfer coefficients for the flat plate were measured using the naphthalene sublimation technique; the inclined angle of the flat plate was varied from $-10^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$ at $5^{\circ}$ intervals, and the free-stream velocity was varied from 2m/s to 15m/s. At positive inclined angles, the local Sherwood numbers decreased gradually because the boundary-layer thickness increased. On the other hand, for negative inclined angles, the local Sherwood numbers assumed the minimum value at the separation point of the recirculation flow and the maximum value at the reattachment point. The average Sherwood numbers for both positive and negative inclined angles were lower than those in the case of the parallel plate.

Fate and transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants can be influenced by naturally-existing humic substances and surfactants applied to wash polluted soils in the subsurface environment. The objective of this paper is to study the solubility enhancement of four PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) and p,p'-DDT in humic acid and surfactant solutions. As the number of aromatic ring is increased, the extent of solubility enhancement of PAHs by humic acid increased. Although the hydrophobicity of p,p'-DDT was the largest among five organic compounds used, the extent of solubility enhancement of p,p'-DDT by humic acid was lower than that of pyrene. In case of anionic surfactants, the extent of the increased solubility of five organic compounds by SDS and SDDBS was increased linearly, but the extent of the increased solubility of p,p'-DDT by MADS-12 was lower than that of perylene.
Sulfonated polyimides had been utilized and studied widely as available materials in chloro-alkali electrolysis, cationic exchange resins, and so on. However, a slow decrease in performance during experiments had been reported, which could be attributed to a loss of ionic conductivity related to either a continuous dehydration or polymer degradation. One of main reasons to account for the degradation of sulfonated polymers is the hydrolysis leading to polymer chain scission and decrement of molecular weight. Therefore, the objective of our study was to investigate possible imide cycle and additional ester bond cleavage connected with $SO_3$H presence under hydrated condition. In order to confirm and obtain as clear information as possible about breakages of bonds via $^1H\; and \;^{13}C$ NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses, our study was performed by model compound. Consequently, model compounds with both phthalic and naphthalenic imide ring and ester bonds were synthesized to evaluate the hydrolysis stability of sulfonated polyimide. The experiments were performed for prepared model compounds before and after aging in deionized water at $80^{\circ}C$ and were terminated by lyophilization technique. The aging products were finally analyzed by NMR and IR spectroscopy.
The separation and purification of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) present in the light cycle oil (LCO) fraction was investigated by a crystallization operation. Solute crystallization (SC) was performed using LCO fraction and iso-propyl alcohol as a raw material and a SC solvent, respectively. Increasing the operation temperature and volume ratio of the solvent to the raw material (S/F) resulted in improving the purity of 2,6-DMN, whereas the yield decreased. As a result of the crystallization operation in three steps containing the SC using LCO fraction (13.9% 2,6-DMN) and isopropyl alcohol, the re-crystallization 1 (RC 1) using the crystals recovered by SC and methyl acetate, and RC 2 using the crystals recovered by RC 1 and methyl acetate, the crystal with 99.9% 2,6-DMN was recovered with 19.5% yield. Furthermore, the separation and purification process of 2,6-DMN present in the LCO fraction was reevaluated by using the experimental results obtained through each operations of SC, RC 1, and RC 2.

This research was focused on the selective separation of $CO_2$ or $CH_4$ from mixture of these gases, by controlling the size of pore or pore gate. Pitch based activated carbon fibers(ACF) were used as adsorbents. The size of pore gate was controlled by the molecule having similar size to that of pore opening. After the adsorption of adsorbate on pore surface, planar molecules such as benzene and naphthalene covered the pore gate. The slow release of adsorbate from the pores covered by planar molecules makes apertures between planar molecules covering pore gate and this structure can be fixed by rapid pyrolysis. The control of pore gate using benzene as covering molecules could not accomplished due to the simultaneous volatilization of benzene and adsorbate$(CO_2)$ caused by similar temperatures of benzene volatilization and adsorbate desorption. Therefore we replaced benzene with naphthalene looking for the stability at a $CO_2$ desorption temperature. The naphthalene molecule was adsorbed on the ACF up to 15% of ACF weight and showed no desorption until $100^{\circ}C$, indicating that the molecule could be used as a good cover molecule. Naphthalene could cover almost all the pore gate, reducing BET surface area from 753 $m^2/g$ to 0.7 $m^2/g$. A mixed gas$(CO_2:CH_4=50:50)$ was adsorbed on the naphthalene treated OG-7A ACF. The amount of $CO_2$ adsorption increased with total pressure, whileas thai of $CH_4$ was not so much influenced on the pressure, indicating that $CO_2$ made more compounds on the ACF surface along with total pressure increase. The most $CO_2$ and the least $CH_4$ were adsorbed in the condition of 0.4 atm, resulting in the highly pure $CH_4$ left in ACF.
The present research was experimentally performed to analyze the effect of delta-wing vortex generators(DWVG) on the heat transfer of fin surface of the plate fin-oval tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of the fin surface for four kinds of DWVG's arrangement was measured by the naphthalene sublimation technique for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 3200. The results showed that the heat transfer of the plate fin-oval tube can be significantly enhanced by DWVG for relatively low Reynolds numbers.

Mass transfer experiment by naphthalene sublimation method has great advantages in measurement of local transfer coefficients in the region of a three dimensional flow or for a model of complex geometry, which is considered to be very difficult with conventional heat transfer measurements. Mass transfer data obtained by naphthalene sublimation technique are converted to the heat transfer data through heat/mass transfer analogy. This analogy is valid for a simple or laminar flow, but new insight is needed when applying to a turbulent flow or complex flow such as separation, reattachment and recirculation, The purpose of this research is to investigate how geometries and flow conditions incorporate heat/mass transfer analogy. Mass transfer experiments are performed using naphthalene sublimation technique for a flat plate, a circular cylinder, and rectangular cylinders. And mass transfer data are compared with earlier heat transfer measurements for the same geometries. Usefulness of analogy relation between heat and mass transfer is examined with these results.
