  • A number of screws are inevitably used for tightening flanges in constructing a vacuum system. A theoretical relation between the axial force and the torque exerted on a screw is easily obtained assuming that the friction force generated on the contacting plane is known, however, in practice the friction is influenced strongly by unknown detailed surface condition. It is difficult to tighten optimally and uniformly the flange seals if the screws commercially available have undefined surface conditions and scattered dimensions, and the axial force produced by the screws can not be expected properly. In this paper a scatter of the axial force over screws and the deviation from an expected one, depending on various fastening conditions, are investigated using a variety of M8, the most popular size for vacuum flanges, domestic stainless screws of hexagonal head and standard thread.

  • A parametric study of load distribution in bolt-nut joints is performed by the method of finite element contact analysis. The contacting surface is assumed unbonded and frictionless. Multi-body contact analysis is performed in elastic region under the assumption of axi-symmetric stress state. Load acting on the first thread from the fastened plate is much greater than that on the other threads in the standard setting. But the load distribution is shown to be improved by making the center of contact force acting on the nut surface move outwards. Such a modification is possible by enlarging the gap between bolt shank and fastened plate or by inserting suitable washers. Shape modification of the standard nut by the making a groove and a step on the nut surface is also suggested, which results in almost uniform load distribution and considerable decrease in the maximum stress of the joint.

  • As the size of electric products such as mobile phones and smart watches decrease, the bolts used to assemble these products should also be miniaturized. A miniature-sized bolt has to provide sufficient joining torque and anti-releasing torque to keep the components together. We studied a serrated bolt as a candidate for a miniature-sized fastener to increase the anti-releasing torque. In a serrated bolt, a serrated shape is formed on the bottom surface of the bolt head to create an obstacle to releasing. In this study, finite element analyses for the joining and releasing of bolts were carried out, and the anti-releasing performance was predicted. Based on the results of analyses using various numbers of serrations and fastening depths, the effects of the number of serrations and fastening depth on the anti-releasing performance were investigated.

  • When a bolt is tightened up to the range of plastic deformation, yielding may be governed by the combined stresses due to the axial force developed in the bolt and the frictional torque induced on the thread by the contact with the nut. Consideration is taken account of the fact that the unengaged portion of the thread has least sectional area, being subject to initial yielding. Once yielding has taken place some strain hardening effect may result. Incremental stress-strain relations are used to treat the continued yielding, which is equivalent to treat continued yielding as if summing up the effects of thin walled cylinders subject to plastic deformation. M10 bolts of fine threads are used for both computational and experimental purposes. Variation of axial forces and frictional torques vs. the frictional coefficients are presented together with other plots showing some characterist of bolt under plastic deformation. Finally, a design and control aid for the tightening(i.e., kind of nomograph) is presented, showing the relationships among the torque factor and frictional coefficients for that particular bolt used in the experiment.

  • In this paper, the finite element analysis of a valve screw for a LPG cylinder has been presented on the leakage safety and strength one, which are computed and investigated by a contact normal stress and von Mises stress between a female screw of a valve and a male screw of a neck ring in a LPG bombe. The LP gas charging pressure of a LPG bombe is $8{\sim}9kg/cm^2$, which is pressurized to the screw sealing contact areas between a valve and a LP gas cylinder. The peak failures of the screw tooth height due to a scratch wear and chipping loss of the contact area may decrease screw tooth strength and increase a leakage of a LP gas. These are strongly affect to the contact normal and von Mises stresses of the valve screws. The FEM computed results show that the tooth height loss due to a wear and chipping failure of the screw peak does not affect to the LP gas leak and strength of a valve screw theoretically. But if the tooth wear of the screw height of a brass valve overpasses the critical strength safety of the valve, the valve screw may be failed in fastening the valve and a LP gas bombe suddenly.

  • As micro screws feature reduced screw lengths and pitches, the resulting clamping force diminishes because of the reduced length of the actual joints. The elements of the clamping force are material, geometry, and friction. We studied the shrinking size of the screw and the methods to improve the clamping force by changing the material. We developed a micro screw using SWCH18A and SUS XM7 materials, and obtained the precision and thickness of the pitch through three-dimensional measurement. We also measured the external resistance of the micro screw by applying the Vicker's hardness test and conducted a break surface analysis using a break torque test and SEM for obtaining the break characteristics.

  • This paper describes the study on a method for improving the structural durability of bolted joints applied to a composite bogie frame. In this study, three bolted joints with and without inserts and screw threads were selected for determining the effect of the inserts, using experiment and analysis. The structural performances of the proposed bolted joints were compared and evaluated using the test method prescribed by the ASTM D5961 standard. The results revealed that the bolted joint having an insert shape without the screw thread offered improved durability for application to a composite bogie frame. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the frame comprising the bolted joints was evaluated using finite element analysis according to the JIS E 4207 standard. The Tasi-Wu and Von-Mises failure criteria were used for determining the failure of the composite structure and bolted joints, respectively. A sub-modeling technique was introduced for investigating the performance of the bolted joints in greater detail. The analysis results demonstrated that the Tasi-Wu failure index of the composite structure near the bolted joints was reduced by approximately one-half after applying an insert without the screw thread. This implies that the structural durability of the bolted joints of a composite bogie frame could be improved by using a metal insert without the screw thread.

  • Behaviour of a thread joint of a rocket motor case show complex structural characteristics. Pre-torque must be applied to the threads to prevent the loosening of the interface from the additional pressure load. During the pressurization of the rocket motor case, the jointing face may be opened if the pre-torque were not set properly or the structure may be failed if the local concentrated stress exceeds the strength of the material. In this paper, the structural behaviour of a thread joint of a rocket motor case were analyzed by the finite element method and the results were compared to the experimental ones. A method to set a pre-torque for a thread joint were proposed to ensure the structural safety.

  • This paper presents the application of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the damage absorption and optimal design of portable smart devices to close in life. CFRP specimens are subjected to a tensile test to estimate their mechanical properties in terms of the stacking angles. Further, the screw reverse torque and screw torque at each stacking angle are determined using a torque tester after tapping holes on the CFRP specimens. Two experiments are performed for comparing their results in order to determine optimal conditions. In the tensile test, a woven specimen is found to have the highest strength and stiffness. In the case of the woven specimen, no difference is observed even when it is applied to prevent loosening of the coating. And average result value was excellent.
