  • Thymus quinquecostatus var. magnus (Nakai) Kitam., an endemic taxon in Ulleung Island, is lectotypified. The lectotype is designated based on careful examination of the original materials (deposited in TI) cited in the protologue of the variety. In addition, taxonomic identity of T. quinquecostatus var. japonicus H. Hara, a problematic name often mistakenly referred to the above taxon, was throughly reexamined.

  • Two naturalized plants belonging to Plantaginaceae and Labiatae are newly recorded for Korean flora. Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton, a taxon of the unrecorded genus Nuttallanthus (Plantaginaceae), was founded in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. This species can be distinguished from the Linaria species by its corolla with a pale blue to a pale purple color, a lower lip longer than the upper lip and seed with 4-7 angles when cross-sectioned. Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. was found in Gwangju Metropolitan city, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do and Gochang-gun, Jeollanam-do. It can be distinguished from L. purpureum L. by its irregularly dentate bracts and upper lips 3-4 mm in length. New Korean names were given, as Sol-lip-hae-rancho to Nuttallanthus canadensis (L.) D. A. Sutton and Eu-reop-gwang-dae-na-mul to Lamium purpureum var. hybridum (Vill.) Vill. In addition, their descriptions, photos, illustrations and keys to related genera and species are provided here.

  • A comparative micromorphological study was examined on the leaves of the genus Glechoma and related genera (Nepetinae, Lamiaceae) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy. The leaves of taxa Marmoritis, Nepeta sect. Glechomanthe, G. hederacea var. longituba (Korea) are revealed amphistomatic type, while the remnants of taxa had hypostomatic type. The size range of the guard cells is $12.50-28.75{\times}9.17-21.25{\mu}m$: the smallest one was found in M. pharicus ($12.50-15.83{\times}9.17-11.25{\mu}m$), while the largest one was measured to G. hederacea var. longituba (Korea: $28.75-28.88{\times}21.25-21.38{\mu}m$). The stomatal type of genera Agastache, Dracocephalum was mostly diacytic, however for the rest rarely together with anisocytic and anomocytic, except G. hederaca var. longituba (Korea), Meehania urticifolia by having combined with diacytic and anomocytic. The shapes of epidermal cells are differ from in abaxial and adaxial side, and dived with two types (e.g., platelet, stripe pattern). Five types (three glandular, two non-glandular hairs) of trichomes are distributed in leaves. Among trichomes, long and stalk capitates glandular trichome, subsessile glands are different from studied taxa so that leaf micromorphological characters are significance features in the taxonomy.

  • The nutlet morphology and pericarp structure of 14 taxa (4 taxa of the genus Glechoma and related taxa) were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy, and a detailed description of nutlet morphological features for all examined taxa is provided. The shape of the nutlet is ovate to elliptic. Its size is 1.36-3.83 mm in length and 0.80-2.65 mm in width. The largest one was found in Marmoritis rotundifolia, while the smallest one was in Agastache nepetoides. Three different surface types were recognized in the studied taxa based on differences in cell outline and cell boundary relief (rectangular, pitted, and ridged negative reticulate-cell). Three types of trichome (uni-cellular non-glandular trichome, multi-cellular non-glandular trichome, and peltate glandular trichome) were distributed in the nutlets. The pericarp is formed in three layers (i.e., exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp including sclenchyma tissue), and the pericarp in the studied species is $39.0-237.5{\mu}m$ thick. The morphological and anatomical features (the nutlet shape, surface type, and trichome distribution) in the genus Glechoma and related taxa are described and discussed.

  • Two unrecorded naturalized species, Stachys agraria Schltdl. & Cham. and Dracocephalum moldavica L (Lamiaceae), are newly reported in Korea. Stachys agraria and D. moldavica were found at Seogwipo-si on Jeju-do and at ChunChen-si in Gangwondo in Korea, respectively. Stachys agraria is distinguished from other related Korean taxa by corolla of 2.4-5.2 mm long with six to twelve flowers in the node. Its local name is "Ae-gi-seok-jam-pul" based on shorter than longer corollar. Dracocephalum moldavica was distinguishable from other Dracocephalum in Korea by the following combination of characters, oblong to ovate-triangular ($1.7-2.4cm{\times}0.8-1.2cm$) leaves and rough crenate at the margin. This taxon is referred to as 'Hyang-yong-meo-ri' in Korean based on its fragrance. We provide a description, illustrations, photographs, and a key of related taxa in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to select suitable plants for beach revegetation as a preliminary study for quantifying the effect of decreasing sand movement. After planting some herbal plants in field, monitoring of temporal change of vegetation coverage which was index of the growth rate was conducted. Through literature reviews, 24 candidate plants for beach revegetation were selected, then seven species of them, Peucedanum japonicum Thunb., Dianthus japonicus Thunb. ex Murray, Sedum oryzifolium Makino, Sedum takesimense Nakai, Sedum spectabile Boreau, Farfugium japonicum (L.) Kitam., Aster sphathulifolius Maxim. were picked through salinity tolerance experiments in laboratory. Seven species selected by salinity tolerance experiments and two additional herbal plants, Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai and Linaria vulgaris Mill., not the candidates, were nine final species which were planted in the beach around Osan port, Uljin, Korea. The changes of vegetation coverage of each species were investigated from photos periodically taken for about a year using image processing methods. As a result of the monitoring, Sedum takesimensei, Dianthus japonicus and Aster sphathulifolius were observed with high coverages during the whole monitoring while Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina and Linaria vulgaris were observed with low coverage during the same period. Consequently, Sedum takesimensei, Dianthus japonicus and Aster sphathulifolius were concluded as the most suitable plants for beach revegetation. Furthur study to quantify the effects of decreasing sand movement by the selected species is needed.

  • The natural populations of Lycopus lucidus Turcz. ex Benth. var. hirtus Regel (Lamiaceae) were found in Gangwon province, Korea. This taxon was mainly distinguished from L. lucidus Turcz. ex Benth. var. lucidus by having multicellular hairs on the stem and leaves. However, the delimitation of this taxon from the typical plants of this variety (var. lucidus) was never assessed and the existence of this taxon was obscure in Korea. So, we provide a detailed morphological description of this taxon, as well as its geographical distribution and habitat.
