  • Bacteria play a major role in the etiology of apical periodontitis. Traditionally it has been held the microorganisms are present in necrotic tissue in the root canal system and in tubules of the root dentin whereas the periapical tissues are free of bacteria. However, it is reported the presence of bacterial in the periapical lesions. They may form the biofilm and survive in the periapical tissues. Especially high incidence of biofilm is reported in the refractory periapical lesions. treatment was presented in the left maxillary first premolar with a long-standing fistula and apical calculus. Also. the role of biofilm and its treatment were discussed.

  • This report is the results of an experimental study on the relative effectiveness of different types of steel fiber in concrete. The fibers considered in the study were straight-indent and hooked-collated with aspect ratios of about 50~100. A fiber volume of 0~2 percent was used throughout this investigation. The fresh fibrous mixes were characterized by the slump and vebe-time, and the hardened materials by their compressive and flexural load-deflection relationships. Hooked fibers were found to be more effective than straight ones in improving the strength and energy absorption of concrete.

  • Recently, large scale concrete structures exposed to severe environment are increasingly built in various locations. The corrosion may severely affect the durability and service life of such a concrete structure. It is therefore, necessary to develop a method to enhance the corrosion resistance of a concrete. And the purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of anti-corrosion polymer cement coated rebar. The corrosion resistance of a concrete with anti-corrosion coating can be identified through accelerated corrosion test. And the bond strength test of a concrete using anti-corrosion coating was also carried out.

  • Shrinkage and creep are the fundamental properties of concrete. These long term deformations can be seen as bothersome(increased deflection) or can be seen as reduction of compressive stress of prestressed concrete. Steel fibers advance the mechanical properties of concrete:tensile strength, ductility, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and post-cracking resistance, etc...Silica fume is pozzolanic material which combines with hydrated lime to generate silicate materials which increase the compressive strength and reduce somewhat the creep of concrete. This paper is the result of the long-term deformation by silica fume and steel fibers with varying percentages.

  • Concrete and shotcrete should withstand the conditions for which they have been designed, without deterioration, over a period of years. But connote and shotcrete are being deteriorated according to aging by internal and external causes. Recently, many studies on the durability of concrete have been conducted But the durability of shotcrete is rarely studied. So, in this study, chloride ion penetration test freeze and thaw test neutralization test were conducted to examine the durability characteristics of shotcrete with several accelerator and chemical admixture types. These results indicate that shotcrete with allah free accelerator and with superplasticizer are durable. Therefore, the present study provides a fm base to make high performance shotcrete.

  • By bond mechanism between the prestressing strand and the concrete surrounding it, the effective force of prestressing must be transferred to the concrete entirely. The distance required to transfer the effective force of prestressing is called the transfer length, and the development length is the bond length required to anchor the strand as it resists external loads on the member. Transfer length was determined from the concrete strain profile at the level of the strands at transfer and development length was determined from various external loading lengths and compared with current code equation. Through the test results, bond failure is predicted based on the distress caused by cracks when they propagate within the transfer zone of prestressing strand. The current code equation was found to be conservative in comparison with the measured value.

  • The occurrence of longitudinal cracking in concrete deck of box girder bridge is affected by many factors, but the most important factors are the shrinkage and thermal gradient of deck slabs. In this study, therefore, the tensile stresses at the bottom of deck were calculated from the experimental data(autogeneous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and thermal gradient of deck slab). Also, the possibility of longitudinal cracks at bottom of deck was estimated. For this purpose, full-scale box girder segments have been fabricated and tested. The thermal gradients and shrinkage strains of deck slabs were measured after placement of concrete. Also, analytic program was conducted for the evaluation of longitudinal cracking in bridge deck considering differential shrinkage induced from non-uniform moisture distributions in concrete.

  • Tailings piled up at Okdong mine in Euiseong consists of fine powder, and are mainly composed of pyrite, sphalerite, chlorite, illite, plagioclase, smectite, gypsum, etc. Smectite is concentrated in the upper part of tailings and chlorite is downwardly increased. Gypsum is generally observed on the surface of the mine tailings, suggesting that it was formed by the reaction of Ca and $SO_4$ in leachate after evaporation. Through the electron microscope study of sphalerite within the tailings, it was observed that there is significant weathering both on surface and in the inner part of the sphalerite, suggesting that the reaction of the failings with groundwater for long period of time contributed a significant addition of Zn and $SO_4$ into the leachate.

  • This study was conducted to find to change of component by different species, plant parts and growth stage of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas Among the species of peony, the contents of compounds was higher in cultivated peony (P. lactiflora P.) as compared with wild peony (P. japonica M., P. obobata M., P. anomala L.). Amount of methyl gallate was highest in 0.45% at Euisung jakyak. Amount of compounds in peony was the highest in 1.0% at paeoniflorin, followed by methyl gallate, astragalin and kaempferol in order. Contents of compounds with different growth stage were observed highest in April, and showed decreased trend in the later growth stage. Methyl gallate was present in 1.79% at petal, 0.56% at leaf and 0.01% at root, astragalin present at 0.27% at petal, 0.20% at leaf and 0.03% at root, and paeoniflorin present at 0.43% at petal, 1.09% at leaf and 2.52% at root.

  • The development of subcutaneous emphysema is a well-known complication that has been reported after dental extraction, endodontic treatment, or restorative preparation. Gaseous invasion, leading to swelling, crepitus on palpation, is commonly restricted to the connective tisssues immediately adjacent to the entry site. However, the use of compressed air- and water-cooled turbines may allow large amounts of air and water to be driven through the fascial planes into the mediastinum, pleural space, or even the retroperitoneum. This case report is about the patient who presented with subcutaneous emphysema that occurred after fracture line inspection. Possible cause, treatment, and prevention of emphysema will be discussed.
