  • The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the trend of urbanization and population distribution in North Korea. Although North Korean data lack comparable details, attention has been given to the comparison of urban system between North and South Korea. In North Korea, the pace of urbanization was most rapid just after the Korean War, from 1954 to 1960. However, the pace slowed down markedly in the early 1970s and has remained sluggish since then. North Korea is currently much less urbanized than South Korea. As specific features of urbanization in North Korea, emergence of new cities along inland borders, prominence of intermediate-sized cities, and sudden population growth of major cities due to boundary expansion are stressed. Available demographic data also indicate an overwhelming primacy of Pyongyang Municipality in the urban system, and rapid growth of satellite cities in the west-central region. It appears that, in North Korea, urbanization process has been a product of the government's development policies rather than individual's socioeconomic motivation to migrate urbanward. Finally, migration issues after unification of the Korean Peninsula and related problems are discussed in this study.

  • This study explores the effects of spousal dissimilarity on marital stability among transnational couples in Korea. Utilizing micro-data from the 2009 Korean National Multi-culture Family Survey, this paper examines whether formation of transnational marriage generally involves positive assortative matching on age and education. Indices of age dissimilarity and educational dissimilarity are calculated for each country of origin of the foreign wife, and their relationships to the average duration of marriage are analyzed. This study also conducts a micro-level analysis of whether age and educational dissimilarity between spouses helps explain variations in marital duration and probability of getting divorced. Results show greater incidences of spousal dissimilarity in age and educational attainment among transnational couples, which supports the transnational openness hypothesis proposed in this paper. The extant hypothesis that spousal dissimilarity increases the risk of marital dissolution and shortens the duration of marriage is not found to fit transnational couples in Korea.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to analyze sex and age composition of the 1994 North Korean census data. First this paper describes the background information concerning the first population census ever taken in North Korea since the separation of the North and South. It utilizes the available data to explain the trend and current population status of North Korea. The focus of this research is to point out and analyze the problems in the sex and age composition of the North Korean census data. One of the most striking characteristics of the census data is that an enormous portion of the young male population was excluded from the census counts. Such omissions are strongly suggested by a incredible drop in sex ratios for the age groups of 16 to 25. In addition, the total sum of the population by age groups turns out to be substantially smaller than the total sum of the population by geographical regions. The total discrepancy amounts to 691 thousand. Along with sex ratios and age ratios, Myers indices, UN age-sex accuracy indices, indices of relative difference, and indices of dissimilarity are calculated to analyze the characteristics and accuracy of sex and age composition in the North Korean census data. Finally, this paper readjusts the sex and age composition of the 1994 census data, and attempts to produce a more accurate population of North Korea.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to explore the impacts of foreign wife status and social capital on fertility among a group of Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese wives in Korea. Attention is focused on the argument that minority group status and immigrant social capital exerts an independent effect on fertility, apart from socioeconomic and demographic variables. It is hypothesized that the level and tempo of fertility of foreign wives reflect their social disadvantages and the adaptation process. Micro-data from two socio-demographic surveys were utilized to analyze the reproductive outcomes of foreign and native wives in Korea. Results of analyses reveal that foreign wives in Korea tend to have fewer children compared to native Korean women. It was found that a foreign wife's access to social capital significantly facilitates reproductive behavior. Those who engage themselves more in voluntary activities, have more friends in Korea, and possess better and higher-quality social networks tend to have more children. Foreign wives with a high degree of integration or assimilation to the new surroundings were also found to have more children than other foreign wives.

  • Absence of long head of biceps tendon is a very rare anomaly. We encountered a 19 year-old male patient who had right shoulder subluxation. On magnetic resonance imaging, shallow intertubercular groove on right humerus was observed, and absence of long head of biceps tendon was discovered. Arthroscopically, labral rupture and absence of long head of biceps tendon were also evident. Left shoulder had a similar symptom as right 5 months after the initial development of the symptom on the right shoulder. Both MRI and arthroscopy revealed absence of long head of biceps tendon and labral ruptre. Arthroscopic labral repair was performed for both shoulders, and, postoperatively, they were fixated with abduction brace. In this case, it is considered that the absence of long head of biceps tendon triggered the instability of shoulder found in our patient.

  • In this study, we analyzed the stick slip characteristics through friction experiments on materials used in mechanical and electronic products, and propose improvements to reduce abnormal noise generated inside refrigerators. To analyze the stick slip phenomenon of the materials, we fabricated a friction testing device and conducted friction experiments. Additionally, we measured the vibration and noise levels of internal components to analyze the occurrence and location of abnormal noise inside the refrigerator. By comparing the results of the refrigerator's phenomenon analysis and friction experiment, we confirm that the abnormal noise occurring inside the refrigerator is caused by the stick slip phenomenon of internal components. Finally, to propose improvements for abnormal noise reduction, we performed friction experiments using the Taguchi method and validated the performance of the proposed improvements by applying them to refrigerators.

  • The main purpose of this study is to analyze the level of fertility of Koreans in China in comparison to Hans. From the demographic perspective, this paper attempts to develop explanation for Korean immigration to northeast China since the mid 19th century. Of interest are the trend of population growth and geographic distribution of Koreans in China Attention is also given to the comparison of the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics between Koereans and Hans in China. The research is based on the raw data files of the 1990 Population Census from Jilin Province and Yanbian Korean Prefecture. The findings of the analysis suggest that the level of fertility of Koreans in China is substantially lower than those of Hans and other ethnic minority. This appears to be particularly true for Koreans residing in the regions densely populated with Koreans. The results of ANOVA and MCA confirm that the ethnic factor does have significant effects on the level of fertility. The lowest fertility of Koreans is found to be consistent after adjusting the effects of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the couple and the household. Despite the recent uprising of the sex ratio at birth in China, it is found in this study that the pattern of sex ratios for Koreans in Jilin Province and Yanbian Korean Prefecture has been fairly balanced and stable. Finally, Koreans are found to have higher level of child mortality than Hans and other ethnic minority.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of raising seedling at Hallasan area of sub-alpine (altitude of 600m above sea level) to improve fruiting.ate of Squash (Cucurbita maxima) in retarding culture. 'Ebis' cultivar was seeded in plug tray of 32 cells and the seedlings were grown for 25 days. They were transplanted on August 26, 2004, following L-stem training method under rain-shielding condition. Seedling height, number of nodes and leaf area were higher in lowland than in sub-alpine area. T/R ratio of seedling in sub-alpine was much lower as compared with that in the lowland. The first fruiting was on the 19th node in sub-alpine area, and on the 26th node in the lowland area(control). The succeeding fruiting nodes were lower by 3 to 5 node than those of control. Fruiting rate of second flower was improved by 17.2% compared with the 1.4% in control. The marketable yield was increased by 27% by raising seedling in sub-alpine area (4,460 kg/10a). This also brought out 20% labour saving effect. The environmental condition for raising seedling in the sub-alpine area of Hallasan was effective for the improvement of Squash (Cucurbita maxima) fruiting rate compared with lowland area.

  • Optimal date to cover plastic film tunnel for hastening the harvest and increasing the yield in asparagus was studied using 2-year-old 'Green tower' cultivar in Jeju. Plastic film tunnel was covered on January 10 and 21, and February 10 and 25 in 2004. The asparagus spear sprouted on March 3 in the control. They emerged earlier by about 2 to 3 weeks in the plots covered on January 10 and 25 than the control. First harvesting was hastened by 3 weeks in the plots covered on February 10 and two weeks in the plots covered on January 25 and February 10 compared to the control. Yield per plant was the highest in plastic film tunnel covered on January 10 and 25. Early harvesting in february in plastic film tunnel covered on January 10 and 25 were 325 and 333 kg/10a respectively with no significant difference between two treatments whereas yield was low significantly in plastic film tunnel covered on February 10 and 25.
