  • Fabrication of a high-resolution shadow mask, or called nanostencil, is presented. This high-resolution shadowmask is fabricated by a combination of MEMS processes and focused ion beam (FIB) milling. 500 nm thick and 2x2 mm large membranes are made on a silicon wafer by micro-fabrication processes of LPCVD, photolithography, ICP etching and bulk silicon etching. Subsequent FIB milling enabled local membrane thinning and aperture making into the thinned silicon nitride membrane. Due to high resolution of FIB milling process, nanoscale apertures down to 70 nm could be made into the membrane.

  • A new cutting parameter is defined in the spherical part of ball end-mill cutter. A series of slot cutting experiments were carried out to obtain the cutting parameter. The cutter contact area is expressed as the grid posiotion in the cutting plane using Z map. The cutting forces in each grid are calculated and saved as force map, prior to the average cutting forces calculation. The cutting force, in the arbitrary cutting area, can be easily calculated by summing up the cutting forces of the engaged grid in the force map. This model was verified in the inclined surface cutting by cutting test of a cylindrical part.

  • In this study, a cutting force in the Ball-end milling process is calculated using Z-map. Z-map can describe any type of cutting area resulting from the previous cutting geometry and cutting condition. Cutting edge of a ball-end mill is divided into infinitesimal cutting edge elements and the position of the ele- ment is projected to the cutter plane normal to the Z axis. Also the cutting area in the cutter plane is obtained by using the Z-map. Comparing this projected position with cutting area, it can be determined whether it engages in the cutting. The cutting force can be calculated by numerical integration of cutting force acting on the engaged cutting edge elements. A series of experiments such as contouring and upward/downward ramp cutting was performed to verify the calculated cutting force.

  • In this paper, an actively controlled aerostatic bearing is studied to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficients. The actively controlled aerostatic bearing is composed of aerostatic bearings, non-contact type of displacement sensors, piezoelectric actuators and controllers. The cylindrical capacitance sensor (CCS) is used as the displacement sensor. The reason for using CCS instead of the commercial gap sensor is that it can give us the pure error motion of the spindle because it removes the roundness error or the geometric errors in the spindle. The controller is designed by the state space equation and quadratic optimal control theory. The characteristic data of the actively controlled aerostatic bearing system in the frequency domain are presented and the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are mentioned. This paper shows the possibility to reduce the motion error up to 6000 rpm.

  • Recently, EI nino and La nina phenomena have known as a cause of the unusual weather and meterological disasters in the world. The meteorological disasters in Korea have mainly caused by typhoons. In this paper, we studied the relationship between EI Nino and La Nina phenomena and the number of typhoons which have affected on Korea using the long-term data for the period from 1940 to 1999 (60 years) in case of normal years, EI Nino years and La Nina years, the numbers of typhoons which have affected on Korea are 3.1/year, 2.7/year and 3.9/year respectively. The number of typhoons which have affected on Korea in La Nina years is more than those in EI Nino years and normal years The occurrence rate of typhoon in La Nina years is also higher than those in EI Nino years and normal years.

  • The hemodynamic effects of thyroid hormone are well established, and this hormone affects myocardial contractility, heart rate, and myocardial oxygen consumption. But the role of cardiopulmonary bypass on the thyroid function is not yet fully understood. We have studied twelve patients [male and female patients were equal in number] who were performed open heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. The results are followed. 1] The serum level of T3 began to fall after cardiopulmonary bypass and sustained significantly till 24 hours after operation[p<0.05] 2] The concentrations of T4, Free T4, and TSH were slightly decreased after cardiopulmonary bypass but was maintained within normal range. 3] This above findings are similar to the "sick sinus syndrome" that is seen in severely ill patient. 4] We can propose that T3 would be effective in postoperative low cardiac output syndrome. syndrome.

  • Rockfall protection fence which is used for mitigation of rockfall hazard, has been constructed without consideration of lithology, height and dip angle of rock slope. However, those factors should be considered for the construction of the protection fence. In addition, the protection fence should be evaluated its performance by in-situ test in order to utilize the fence effectively. This is the first full sized rockfall test in Korea. For this test, the rock cut slope whose height is about 20 m and dip angle is 65 $^{\circ}$ has been chosen. Based on the preliminary simulation procedure, four different concrete balls (0.5 ton, 1.0 ton, 2.0 ton and 5.0 ton) were prepared and four different types of protection fence were constructed. The results of this test will be utilized in the establishment of rockfall protection fence construction manual.

  • In this paper, the shaped offset Cassegrain antenna with low sidelobe, low cross-polar level, and high efficiency is designed. The design data is presented for shaping scheme. The validity of radi-ation characteristics is accomplished by comparing the result of measurement with numerical calculation and design goal. Experimental results of designed antenna are in good agreement with design goal except efficiency.

  • As mechanical components require size minimization and high precision, micro die machining technology has been developed in many fields. to machine a micro die by EDM, sometimes, a polygonal electrode is use. Machining corners by MEDM shows special characteristics. Physically, electrons are concentrated in sharp region and a high potential level is established in this region. Also, the electrode can't be rotated when machining a polygonal cavity, and machined debris can not drawn off easily. Discharge concentration in corners and 2nd discharge by machined debris result in distortion of corner shape. This phenomena can be improved by shaking the electrode. This method is also shown to be effective in improving surface roughness by circulation of machining fluid resulting from movement of the electrode.

  • In this study, a method is proposed for the cutting force prediction of Ball-end milling process using Z-map is proposed. Any types of cutting area generated from previous cutting process can be expressed in z-map data. Cutting edge of a ball-end mill is divided into a set of finite cutting edges and the position of this edge is projected to the cross-section plane normal to the Z-axis. Comparing this projected position with Z-map data of cutting area and determining whether it is in the cutting region, total cutting force can be calculated by means of numerical integration. A series of experiments such as side cutting and upward/downard cutting was performet to verify the simulated cutting force.
