We derive a set of formuale which show one-to-one correspondence between the the unitary Jones matrices of transparent anisotropic media and the rotational transformations on the Poincare sphere. By using the formuale one can determine the vectorial representation of the rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere which specifies the direction of the axis and the angle of the rotation in terms of the three parameters specific to the corresponding unitary Jones matrix, and conversely the the three parameters of the uniatry Jones matrix in terms of the vectorial representation of the corresponding rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere. To understand the polarization transmission characteristics of an optical system consisting of transparent linear anisotropic media, start with the Jones calculus to get the unitary Jones matrix for the whole system and then convert it to a rotational transformation on the Poincare sphere, from which we can intuitively understand the effect of the optical system on the polarization state of the light passing through the system.
In this paper, a novel architecture for device miniaturization of multimode interference-based (MMI) couplers is proposed. The coupling length of $N{\times}N$ MMI couplers scales as the square of the MMI region width so that the use of these structures with large-N ports can require large chip size. To solve the design problem, the butterfly grating-assisted MMI couplers, that have smaller device dimensions than conventional MMI couplers, are discussed and evaluated. Numerical simulations and novel design rules for such structures derived through theoretical analysis are presented.
A fundamental problem in the in-line digital holography microscope is that the real image and virtual image and zero-order image are not separated spatially. In this paper, we have eliminated the zero-order noise by an averaging method and the twin image is divided using a geometrical set-up in an in-line digital holographic microscope. The size of the virtual image depends on the distance between the objective lens and the hologram plane and on the distance between the hologram plane and the image plane. We found that the virtual image size is smallest when the distance between the objective lens and the hologram plane is equal to the back focal length of the objective lens. We could divide the virtual image and real image by controlling the distance between the hologram plane and the objective lens.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is developing the 2.6 ${\times}$ optical scope with a Abbe-K$\ddot{o}$nig prism. Methods: First, considering the size of the effective aperture and the focal length of the objective lens, we designed an Abbe-K$\ddot{o}$nig prism. Next, we calculated the optical and geometric distances of Abbe-K$\ddot{o}$nig prism designed in this way. After allocating the focal length of the objective lens and the eyepiece lens so as to satisfy the magnification and optical effective distance of the entire system by using this calculation result, we completed the entire system by optimizing this optical system. Results: We were able to complete the optical scope of about 2.6 ${\times}$ magnification by designing an objective lens with a focal length of 63.13 mm which was composed of two pieces, an eyepiece with a focal length of 24.3 mm which was composed of four pieces, and an Abbe-K$\ddot{o}$nig prism with a face length 11.5 mm. Conclusions: We designed and fabricated an optical scope with 2.6 ${\times}$ magnification employing an Abbe-K$\ddot{o}$nig prism. Then, this system became the compacted optical system with a barrel diameter of 31 mm, characterized by an effective aperture of 12.0 mm and an effective optical barrel length of 103 mm and a resolution of 200 cycles/rad at 50% MTF criterion within the half viewing field angle of $6.42^{\circ}$.

This paper shows the acceleration of iterative physical optics(IPO) for radar cross section(RCS) by using two techniques effectively. For the analysis of the multiple reflection in the cavity, IPO uses the near field method, unlike shooting and bouncing rays method which uses the geometric optics(GO). However, it is still far slower than physical optics(PO) and it is needed to accelerate the speed of IPO for practical purpose. In order to address this problem, graphic processing unit(GPU) can be applied to reduce calculation time and adaptive iterative physical optics-change rate(AIPO-CR) method is also applicable effectively to optimize iteration for acceleration of calculation.
We investigated surface-relief profiles of the TPHK(telecentric paraxial holographic kinofrm) used as a Fourier-transform lens employing exact geometrical raytracing. For the TPHK of F/8 and focal length of 15 mm, we consider the cases where the thickness of the substrate is 0 and 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, dividing the surface-relif profiles into fifty steps from plano-convex to convexplano shapes and varying the angle of incidence($0^{\circ},{2.5}^{\circ},5^{\circ}$). In order to identify appropriate surface-relief profiles, we employ, as criteria of performance, rms spot size, rms deviation from $f{\sin}{\theta}$, peak position and FWHM(full width at half maximum), number of rays abandoned from raytracing etc., which are determined from the result of exact raytracing. It is found that the profile with 80% of its relief thickness facing the image plane gives the best performance regardless of the presence of substrate.

Various satellite sensors having ranges of the visible, infrared, and thermal wavelengths have been launched due to the improvement of hardware technologies of satellite sensors development. According to the development of satellite sensors with various wavelength ranges, the fusion and integration of multisensor images are proceeded. Image matching process is an essential step for the application of multisensor images. Some algorithms, such as SIFT and SURF, have been proposed to co-register satellite images. However, when the existing algorithms are applied to extract matching points between optical and thermal images, high accuracy of co-registration might not be guaranteed because these images have difference spectral and spatial characteristics. In this paper, location of control points in a reference image is extracted by SURF, and then, location of their corresponding pairs is estimated from the correlation of the local similarity. In the case of local similarity, phase correlation method, which is based on fourier transformation, is applied. In the experiments by simulated, Landsat-8, and ASTER datasets, the proposed algorithm could extract reliable matching points compared to the existing SURF-based method.

There are technical difficulties in measuring the numerical apertures of multi-mode gradient-index plastic optical fibers (GI-POFs) due to their strong speckle noise originating from dopants, non-uniformity of gradient-index profile, and multi-mode interference. Therefore, we propose a new method of obtaining the numerical aperture by controlling the size of the incident laser beam and measuring the numerical aperture of GI-POF. The results show that we can get a value for the numerical aperture of GI-POF very similar to that measured by the conventional method. We can also obtain the optimum launching condition of input beam and maximum coupling efficiency.
The aim of this study is to develop a new software tool for 3D dose verification using $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel dosimeter. The tool included following functions: importing 3D doses from treatment planning systems (TPS), importing 3D optical density (OD), converting ODs to doses, 3D registration between two volumetric data by translational and rotational transformations, and evaluation with 3D gamma index. To acquire correlation between ODs and doses, CT images of a $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel with cylindrical shape was acquired, and a volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plan was designed to give radiation doses from 1 Gy to 6 Gy to six disk-shaped virtual targets along z-axis. After the VMAT plan was delivered to the targets, 3D OD data were reconstructed from 512 projection data from $Vista^{TM}$ optical CT scanner (Modus Medical Devices Inc, Canada) per every 2 hours after irradiation. A curve for converting ODs to doses was derived by comparing TPS dose profile to OD profile along z-axis, and the 3D OD data were converted to the absorbed doses using the curve. Supra-linearity was observed between doses and ODs, and the ODs were decayed about 60% per 24 hours depending on their magnitudes. Measured doses from the $PRESAGE^{REU}$ Gel were well agreed with the TPS doses at central region, but large under-doses were observed at peripheral region at the cylindrical geometry. Gamma passing rate for 3D doses was 70.36% under the gamma criteria of 3% of dose difference and 3 mm of distance to agreement. The low passing rate was resulted from the mismatching of the refractive index between the PRESAGE gel and oil bath in the optical CT scanner. In conclusion, the developed software was useful for 3D dose verification from PRESAGE gel dosimetry, but further improvement of the Gel dosimetry system were required.
