  • In this study, Rock deformation at the artificially advanced face was investigated by using the finite element code relating to the split blasting conducted in urban area. The maximum principal strain according to the detonation pattern and the detonation delay time at the rock surface was compared with the modeled blast section. As a result, it was found that the maximum principal strain was observed a difference depending on the detonation pattern at the rock surface, and the detonation delay time was an important parameter in split blasting.

  • In the present research paper large scale blasting was conducted on two different firing patterns, namely, straight V type and skewed V type pattern on the same sandstone overburden bench with similar explosives. The post-blast fragmentation assessments were made by use of digital imaging technique. The total cycle time of 10 $m^3$ rope shovels was also recorded in the field. The results reveal improvements in the fragmentation and excavator performance results for the blasts fired on skewed V type pattern. The paper discusses the skewed V firing pattern and the reasons for its superior performance vis-$\grave{a}$-vis the straight V type pattern.

  • Two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis was performed to analyze the attenuating characteristics of shock waves generated by the detonation of the bulkhead initiator. Through the interlocking analysis between HNS and HMX stacking initiator and STS bulkhead, we have precisely simulated detonation growth and pressure wave attenuation phenomena. The free surface velocity at the surface of the bulkhead was measured for quantitative comparison with the test data by VISAR. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure attenuating pattern of the shock wave exponentially decreased according to the bulkhead thickness. The observed inflection point at the particle velocity measured over time is due to the subsequent propagation of the shock wave due to the rapid spallation of the interface between the detonator and the bulkhead.

  • The paper presents a case study of a limestone quarry of the Philippines, where major problems in terms of improper fragmentation, poor wall control, and poor heave of the muck pile were witnessed. The paper highlights the significant role of switching over from diagonal firing pattern to V-type firing pattern, and also of making suitable adjustments in the stemming column length for improved confinement and gas retention. The study revealed that by making aforesaid design modifications in the blast round, marked improvement in blasting results was registered. Looking at the results, it was further contemplated to expand the mesh area in the subsequent blast rounds. The mesh area was incremented from the existing $8.96m^2$ to $12m^2$. The results were meticulously registered in the field, and clearly depicted definite improvements in the blast results in terms of increased P.F., reduced boulder count, reduced FEL cycle time, reduced dozing hours and improved heave.

  • The present paper highlights some important fragmentation issues experienced in the limestone quarry blast rounds. In light of these major issues, the paper outlines influence of a few important design parameters, which bear merit to alter the blast performance in order to duly resolve the issues in field scale blast rounds. A comprehensive field based program for evaluation of such blast rounds has also been suggested. The knowledge disseminated in the paper, backed up by sufficient images, is largely based on the experience of the authors, while designing, implementing and evaluating numerous field scale blast rounds in cement grade limestone quarries.

  • A drill & blasting method using explosives is the most efficient way to break the rock in the urban projects. However, the blasting method cause vibration, noise and fly-rock as blast pollutions so that blasting wroks are restricted by adjacent structures such as apartment and residence houses. To conduct blasting works at near structures, the numbers of blast-holes a blast and the size of the blast are limited by kinds of detonators and initiation methods. So, the production rate is reduced and the construction period should be increased. Therefore, in this case the deck-charge blasting methods using available detonators in domestic market were designed and evaluated in order to confirm the application possibilities in specific urban sites.
