  • Paraganglioma is a neoplasm consisting of sympathetic neuroendocrine cells, which arise from neural ectoderm of extra-adrenal paraganglia. It often occurs in thyroid, carotid body, mediastinum, lung, duodenum, the retroperitoneal area and periaortic area. Malignant paraganglioma is defined not by the histological diagnosis, but by spread to regional lymph nodes or distant metastasis. Rare bone metastasis mostly occurs in the base of skull or spine, and even it rarely metastasizes to pelvis or femur. We would like to report two cases of paraganglioma; one in the subcutaneous fat layer that was mistaken for a vascular tumor, and the other in the retroperitoneal space with early bone metastasis.

  • Purpose: This 3D-FEA study was performed to investigate the influence of marginal bone loss pattern around the implant to the stress distribution. Material and methods: From the right second premolar to the right second molar of the mandible was modeled according to the CT data of a dentate patient. Teeth were removed and an implant ($\Phi\;4.0{\times}10.0mm$) was placed in the first molar area. Twelve bone models were created; Studied bone loss conditions were horizontal bone loss and vertical bone loss, assumed bone loss patterns during biologic width formation, and pathologic vertical bone loss with or without cortification. Axial, buccolingual, and oblique force was applied independently to the center of the implant crown. The Maximum von Mises stress value and stress contour was observed and von Mises stresses at the measuring points were recorded. Results: The stress distribution patterns were similar in the non-resorption and horizontal resorption models, but differed from those in the vertical resorption models. Models assuming biologic width formation showed altered stress distribution, and weak bone to implant at the implant neck area seams accelerates stress generation. In case of vertical bone resorption, contact of cortical bone to the implant may positively affect the stress distribution.

  • Osteochomdromas, which are uncommon in the hand, are encountered most frequently with hereditary multiple exostosis. They can occur away from the epiphyseal plate region at the distal end of the proximal and middle phalanges. But little has been written about exostosis that occur at the distal end of the distal phalnges. We report one case of hereditary multiple exostosis that arose at the distal end of the distal phalnges. Complete excision was done and the patient was disease-free of 4 years follow-up.

  • In order to analyze the relationship between teeth and basal bone for the maintainance of the good occlusion, the mesiodistal width of teeth, the basal arch width and the basal arch length were measured on the study model of the normal occlusion group and Angle's class I malocclusion group (non-extraction group, extraction group) The Maximum tooth material, the percentage of basal arch width to maximum tooth material, the percentage of basal arch length to maximum tooth material and the percentage of basal arch width plus basal arch length to maximum tooth material were caculated, and then statistical analysis was done. From thie study, the obtained results were as follows; 1. In maxilla, the percentage of basal arch width to maximum tooth material was $46.9{\pm}2.6\%$ in normal occlusion group, $49.4{\pm}3.9\%$ in non-extraction group, and $42.5{\pm}3.3\%$ in extraction group. In mandible, that was $46.6{\pm}2.4\%$ in normal occlusion group, $47.5{\pm}4.0\%$ in non-extraction group, and $42.6{\pm}2.6\%$ in extraction group. 2. • Bizzare parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation is a rare lesion, tends to frequently recur. It was first described in 1983, when Nora and his colleagues reported 35 examples of a proliferative lesion involving small bones of the hand and the feet. It was regarded as occurring only in the small bones of the hand and the feet initially, but from then on, other authors have been reported cases including those involving long bones, skull and maxilla. We experienced a case of bizzare parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation which affects the humeral shaft in a 14-year-old male patient. Radiographs showed calcified mass measuring $4{\times}3$ cm in size and attached to the underlying cortex, which had a broad stalk base. Histologically, it showed hypercellular cartilage maturation to the trabecular bone and plump amount of fibrous stroma in the spaces around the bony trabeculae. Bizzare parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation is a relatively rare lesion, but has a recurrent behavior and histologically tends to be mistaken for malignancy. It can be treated by excision.

  • Comparative osteology of Chromis notata, C. analis and C. fumea was studied based on the samples collected from the Korean waters. The three species are distinguished by the shape of cranium, visceral skeleton, vertebra and caudal skeleton. Chromis notata has a glossohyal which is slightly curved in shape while two other species are deeply curved. C. analis has three spiniform procurrent caudal rays while others have two. C. fumes could be distinguished easily by the shape of preopercle which is serrate in posterior margin. This investigator reveals following bones as new taxonomic criteria for the genus Chromis in Korea. In cranium, height of supraoccipital, height of process of parasphenoid and anterior margin of basisphenoid, in visceral skeleton, presence of fine papilla-like process at the surface of preopercular sensory canal, in orbital bone, width of preorbital, in hyoid arch, shape of glossohyal, union state between lower hypohyal and ceratohyal and union state between ceratohyal and epihyal, in shoulder girdle bone, dorsal margin of posttemporal, width of upper postclavicle, posterior end of lower postclavicle and posterior margin of first actinost bone, in vertebrae, beginning point of parapophysis, in caudal skeleton, upper shape of second neural spine of pleural centrum.

  • Chondroblastoma is a benign chondroid-forming tumor usually originating in the epiphysis. The base of metatarsal bone contains neither an epiphysis nor a secondary ossification center and so is the rare site of chondroblastoma. Here, we present a case of chondroblastoma of the base of fifth metatarsal bone in 34-year-old man. Histologically, the osteoclast-like giant cells were abundant enough to simulate a giant cell tumor. And the chondroid intercellular matrix was intermixed but scanty. However, the background mononuclear cells showed irregular and indented nuclei with longitudinal clefts and positive immunoreactivity for S-100 protein, as the evidence of chondroblasts.
