  • The purpose of this research is to introduce Langdon Winner's views on technology and to evaluate his theory in terms of the future direction of philosophy of technology. First, an attempt to situate Winner's idea in the history of philosophy of technology will be made. Second, details of Winner's position concerning technology will be demonstrated. His understanding of technology, diagnosis of modern technological society, evaluation of contemporary philosophical discourse on technology, and his own suggestion for overcoming problems of the technological society will be presented respectively. Third, Winner's philosophy of technology will be evaluated. • Throughout its short history, the discourses of philosophy of technology has been centered around two issues, namely the recovery of human autonomy in technological society and the pursuit of sustainable development. Following the basic subject matters of the discipline, this article suggests to examine the possibility of the 'ethical engineering design,' meaning that ethical consideration should be included in engineering design. This proposal is based on the critique that philosophy of technology has so far focused on the external approach to the problem of technology, neglecting the active role of engineers. By paying attention to engineering design, however, philosophy of technology can offer a more realistic solution for the problems of the technological society. The first section shows the context of the current discussion by surveying the brief history of philosophy of technology. The thesis of engineering design in philosophy of technology will be presented in the second section, together with supporting reasons. The third section will examine theories and efforts that raised the issue of engineering design in the past. They have been suggested in different contexts, but when put together, they can be used for the justification of the current proposal. The fourth section will deal with the possible critiques of this proposal, which will be followed by suggestions for engineers themselves.

  • In this paper I would like to examine critically technology in this age. In the first place, I discuss various dangerous aspects of contemporary technology. In the second and third section, I do research in Heidegger's and Ellul's philosophy of technique and appreciate them. Finally, as the result of it, I suppose the alternative perspective in social structure. This is my main intent.

  • This paper suggests teaching philosophy of technology in engineering ethics class, as a realistic solution for convergence education of engineering and humanities. First, the need for convergence between engineering and humanities are presented, which is followed by the analysis of the current convergence education in Korea, especially since the introduction of the ABEEK. Third, the proposal for teaching philosophy of technology in engineering ethics will be presented, together with the expected effect of such a trial. Finally, the actual implementation of this curricula will be introduced. In 2008 and 2009, the engineering ethics course in Handong Global University adopted this proposal. The evaluation of students will be examined, which indicates the direction that the convergence of engineering and humanities should take.
