  • Microfilm has been used as an important media for enhancing the long term preservation and improving access to records. However, because of technological changes, there have been discussion about whether we should keep using microfilm. This paper presents survey results to review the preservation methods such as microfilming and digitization. The content is organized according to the trends found in the survey from six archives and libraries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Moreover, we refer to other papers from the USA and Japan to require further review if we can accept digitized records as the original records, etc. The rest consists of four parts: the use of microfilm as a storage media for preservation, the authenticity of digitized records, the management of records on microfilm, and the preservation of electronic media. Finally, we would like to suggest the way to improve preservation systems and digitize records more widely.

  • This study suggests the development of a classification system for the Independent Movement Records of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs based on the collection of Gonghun Digital Archive based on sources, subjects, and media types. First, the classification system by source is organized by hierarchy, and the records classified by source are classified into the second category based on the related keyword. Then, the records are classified into 17 media types. Finally, it is described in the citation order of "source-subject-media type." In addition, a meaningful collection using inductive methods based on the subject words is derived. Finally, Gonghun Digital Archive collections are categorized by media types, sources, and subjects so that users can easily find the records. The result of this study is a classification system to support records retrieval of an independent movement collection, and it will become a basis for expanding the accessibility of the user and the service of independent movement records.

  • Many scholars exerted efforts to establish archival studies as a specialized academic domain. Two of the most often-quoted leading scholars who worked for the emergence of modern archival studies were English archivist Hilary Jenkinson (1882-1961) and American archivist Theodore R. Schellenberg (1903-1970). As they were published over 50 years ago, their theories were not only applied in various areas, but they also served as important principles in archival practice in the past. Nevertheless, there only exists a few translated books on the prominent archival theories. These studies-which directly focus on their theories or related studies such as comparative studies-lack Korean translations. The objectives of this study are to review Jenkinson and Schellenberg's biography and their professional achievements, as well as to empirically examine and investigate why there were differences in their theories by reviewing the periods they had lived and worked in. To achieve these objectives, the review of their academic and biographical backgrounds was prioritized. Their archival definitions, assessment, roles and perspectives on education as archivists were then compared one by one.

  • Growing interest in everyday-life archives and community archives leads to the establishment of small-scale archives in the private sector. Interoperability of descriptive information is necessary to be able to have a link between these factors. The purpose of this study is to explore how descriptive information can be interoperable in private archives, which participate in the archives network, and to suggest a direction in organizing the private and community archives network. For this purpose, it investigated the current situation of archival description in small-scale private archives in Korea, especially in terms of collection, and analyzed descriptive information applied to four foreign archives networks. Based on the analysis, it gives some suggestions for sharing descriptive information in Private and Community Archive Network (PCAN) in Korea.

  • It has passed ten years since modern records and archives management in our country launched. During times, it has dramatically developed in the fields of law, institution and education. However a study on the definition of records and archives was non be studied enough compared to development of various research fields. In fact the reason why study on the definition was non fulfilled is that some aspects such as historical, informational, archival perspective have been coexisting without order in Korea. This situation is the biggest barrier that archival science is to a disciplinary field. Historically, 'archivium' in Latin language had developed in starting of its means place, then whole entity of documents and those organic relations. In this point, archives is rigidly separate to material of Historical science which covers all of recorded. Unlike information which is produced in the process of intended themes and following its outputs like books, documents in archival science is made in the natural process of work. In addition, historical archives which finished the current and semi-current stage and transfer to the institute of permanent conservation after the process of selection so that it is historical and cultural value to satisfy its purpose of making. This changed trend is based on the Second World War and necessity of North American society which needs to effciency and transparency of work. In Korea, records and archives management has been dominantly affected by North American society and become a subject of not arrangement but of classification, not of transferring but of collection. It is also recognized as management of on formation on the all recorded or documents not as an whole documents and all organic relations. But the original type of recognition is the only technology, it cannot have dignity as a field of science.

  • While academic discussions and methodological researches on oral history are being progressed in Korea, its exploitation has already begun to increase with a variety of methods and approaches in the private sector. Oral history is a new method of research, as well as another process of production of archives. In order to make valuable and highly qualified archives of oral history with the application of the aforementioned conditions and characteristics, its recognition, environment, process, and method should be improved and developed. From this point of view, it is regarded as reasonable that oral history is recognized as a part of the strategy for documentation. Oral history should be produced based on common sense and reasonable judgment, applying empirical know-how rather than logic or principles because it holds a great number of characteristics, which include variable elements in the field of oral history. In addition, its process or documentation methods should be improved and developed, giving consideration to thorough exploitation. The promotion or revitalization of oral history is a signal that announces the advent of new archives and the new subjects of history at the same time. Endeavors to produce highly efficient archives of oral history are expected to be continued with the complex accumulation of empirical assets achieved at academic discussions and its fields.

  • This study intends to rehabilitate the memories of the social other which have been gradually forgotten in the social events overloaded with the undemocratic violence in South Korea today. This study explores a case of Yongsan Tragedy in 2009 among the most tragic events. It notes the autonomous ways in which activist artists would like to memorize the socio-historical events anew despite the emptiness of public records. In other words, this study considers the Yongsan case to be significant that a group of the public, artists, grassroots activists, religion men got together in solidarity so as to create the contested narratives countering dominant memories and thus to signify the records written by the civil society. Among others, activist artists had documented the unofficial counter-memories of socially alienated peoples in terms of planning a series of artistic events such as opening some gallery exhibitions and performance events, issuing a volume of work books, comics and photographies, online broadcasting, and directing some documentaries. Especially, this paper tends to note the documentation of on-site activist artists to record the counter-memories against social oblivion. By doing so, it finally suggests how we could document the Yongsan Tragedy both to search out the archival implications of today's art activism and to insert those artistic records into the commonly shared counter-memories in a more inclusive way.
