  • This study aims to propose implications for the development of archival content of archives management institutions in Korea by analyzing cases of the archival content on Instagram of the national archives in the Anglosphere. The basic information of the research target's Instagram account, including the creation date, content, and the number of followers, was investigated, and the posts' contents and interaction types with high user responses were analyzed. As a result, to spread the records information service using Instagram, producing images and short-form content that can be intuitively checked through mobile screens and creating content that will attract the attention of primary users are required. Moreover, it is necessary to develop content for informative communications that can be shared with other users. There is also a need to enhance the exposure and searchability of the institution's Instagram account by strengthening connections with the institution's existing online resources and enabling communications, such as using hashtags, following related institutional accounts, and providing feedback on the contents' comments with followers. This study is meaningful in that it examined cases of archival content for Instagram and suggested their applications, and it can be used as basic data to help plan archival contents to spread the archival culture.

  • This study discusses 'Archive 2.0' as a new paradigm for managing and maintaining user-centered archives. A number of characteristics of 'Archive 2.0' which are quite different from established archives, so-called 'Archive 1.0', are explored in three aspects including management, user relation and archivists' role. Furthermore, the study analyzes types of record services and user participations according to applied technologies. For case studies, two wiki-based record services, 'Your Archives' and 'Our Archives', are explored. Based on the theoretical and practical studies, advantages and drawbacks of 'Archive 2.0' are analyzed. As a result, essential elements for establishing 'Archive 2.0' are discussed.

  • Archives provide users with easier and more convenient access to and use of archival data through their Internet websites. Now, archival websites function not only as a tool of information provision or marketing, or as a gateway of Internet-based materials, but also as cyber space for all services of archives, providing users with information and knowledge and direct accessibility to the services in the archives. At present, Korean archives are proceeding with establishing websites or upgrading existing websites, and the use rates and reliability of web services by users are becoming higher. However, although there have been various studies for the evaluation of general websites, few are found with regard to the evaluation of archival websites. It is necessary for archival websites that provide information service to users of every stripe to make more efforts and have more interest in user-centered convenience, right to know, and information provision-centered service. Accordingly, needless to say, it is necessary to study evaluation criteria of websites so that high quality archival websites can be established. With this background, this study establishes evaluation criteria for archival websites, which are appropriate to their objectives and functions and directly evaluates archives, presenting ways to establish and redevelop archival websites. More detailed purposes are as follows: First, analyzes existing theories of evaluation through reviews on previous literature and elicits evaluation criteria for websites, which are appropriate to archives; Second, based on the elicited evaluation criteria for archival websites, examines the current state of domestic archival websites through analytic evaluation; and Third, presents ways to improve archival websites that may be helpful in establishing or improving them in the future. The expectancy effects of this study are as follows: First, it will be helpful when one wishes to identify the current state of archival websites and to improve or redevelop existing websites, or to develop online service through website; Second, it will function as a checklist when a developer who is to establish an archival website wishes to develop evaluation criteria; and Third, it may be used as an inspection tool when an archives contracts out the establishment of its website.

  • A significant number of studies have been conducted on user perceptions of archive and record contents for the National Archives of Korea (NAK) and local record centers in the field of archives and records management in Korea. Yet, there has not been such a research on the use of digital archive contents designed for contents creation. Accordingly, this study investigated user perceptions of the use of the contents on the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)'s Culturing archive designed for creation purposes. A survey was conducted, examining the user's degree of interests, the expected user preference of the use and the expected extent of help by the contents of the archive. For the analyses of the survey data, this study performed one-way ANOVA for the comparative analyses of the means related to the subjects' general characteristics and the perceptions, along with cross-tabulation analyses for the association among the same items and nominal variables related to perceptions. On the basis of these analyses, this study suggests the following: ① to supplement the contents of the archive; ② to design customized interfaces and to enhance the readability; ③ to reinforce site PRs for large portal sites and creators' groups.

  • Today, most archives provide recording services through social media; however, their effectiveness is very low. This study aimed to analyze the causes of insufficient social media recording service, focusing on Gyeongnam Archives and Seoul Metropolitan Archives, which are permanent records management institutions and local government archives, and design ways to create synergy by mutual growth with classical recording service. Through literature research, the characteristics and mechanisms of each social medium were identified, and the institutions' current status of social media operations and internal documents were reviewed to analyze the common problems. An in-depth analysis was conducted by interviewing the person in charge of recording services at each institution. In addition, a plan that can be applied to archives was proposed by reviewing the cases of social media operations of domestic-related institutions and overseas archives. Based on this, a new recording service process was established, strategic operation plans for each social medium were proposed, and a plan to mutually grow with the existing recording service was designed.

  • This study investigates how participatory digital archives should handle user-contributed content in order to legitimately collect from and make available to users according to current copyright laws and related regulations. In doing so, this study surveys the current national and international copyright laws that would apply for digital contents in archives. It also reviews the existing literature that analyzes the understanding and interpretation of regulations and specific infringement cases. Then, it examines the cases of participatory digital archives as to how they deal with the copyright issues to user-contributed content and provide guidance to users in this respect. Based on such analysis, the study suggests a few methods of how digital archives acquire necessary rights for the user-contributed content being housed in archives and how they provide useful guidance to users about their rights and responsibilities. These methods include terms and conditions for contribution/service and essential elements in terms, contributor agreements and their details, and other user guidelines.

  • UNESCO clearly has a good user interface compared to other sites. However, it does not have a structure in which user-centric knowledge curating is employed by users. As such, the knowledge structure should be expressed differently in advance for users to enjoy such benefits. At present, almost all current information systems are lacking with semantic and contextual information. Moreover, these systems are deemed insufficient of interlinking various kinds of thoughts in our minds. Thus, it is necessary to model in advance what users are likely to think and provide an interface that they can easily utilize based on that modeling. Furthermore, there is a need for a new structural theory based on semantic technology that can make that possible. Therefore, in this proposal, theoretical and practical insights were presented for user interface implementation to which relational facet navigation based on the structural theory is applied. Moreover, this proposal intends to suggest a "thinking expansion platform" that allows users' ideation of different concepts, including those unfamiliar to them.

  • The program of exhibition is used as one of the most effective ways to interact with users who are unfamiliar to archives. But, so far most exhibition programs in archives have been done in a way that shows simply the contents of records. So, in many cases, visitors of archives have paid little attention to the exhibition, and they have hardly caught the purpose of the exhibition event. Archives need to get out of existing exhibition style which list contents-oriented records, and to develop a new exhibition way which can enhance users' interests and understanding about exhibition records. For this purpose, this study examined the concepts and composition elements of record exhibition, analyzed the cases of archive exhibition in and out of Korea. And this study examined some considerations for the exhibitions of educational archives. As a result of this study, record exhibition ways for educational archives are provided.

  • Archives should promote services to users using various outreach service methods. Although the archives' tour program is one of the effective means of services, there has been few studies on the archival tour program. This study investigated archival tour programs and tried to suggest a desirable tour program, with the Korean Presidential Archives as a case. For this study, four U.S. Presidential Libraries' tour programs were investigated and analyzed. Also, tour programs offered in similar organizations in Korea, such as Kim Daejung Library, Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and National Library of Korea, were analyzed. Current tour programs offered by the Korean Presidential Archives were also analyzed and some limitations were identified. Based on the characteristics of the Korean Presidential Archives, which will be moved to independent building in Sejong City soon, desirable direction to organize tour programs for various user groups were suggested.
