  • Long-term axial shortening of the vertical elements of tail buildings results in differential movements between two elements and may lead to the additional moments of connection beam and slab elements, and other secondary effects, such as cracks of partitions or curtain walls. Accurate prediction of time-dependent column shortening is essential for tall buildings from both strength and serviceability aspects. The compensation method is different from reinforced concrete and SRC(Steel Reinforced Concrete) members. The SRC columns are usually compensated according to total differential shortening between two vertical elements. In this study, column shortenings of 37-story W building under construction are predicted and compensated. The SRC column shortenings are compared with the actual column shortening by field measurement and the column shortenings are reanalysed and recompensated.

  • It is essential to control the lateral displacement and differential axial shortening of the vertical elements in high-rise buildings. Recently, an outrigger or a mega structure system has been adopted to control the lateral displacement. Furthermore, to resolve the problems caused by differential axial shortening in high-rise buildings, analytical prediction and correction is often studied; however, the study on the comparisons of the lateral load resisting systems to address differential axial shortening is less. Therefore, in this paper, a 60-story RC residential building using an outrigger or a mega structure system is analyzed with a construction sequence. Moreover, differential axial shortening can result in an additional member force of structural members and failure of non-structural members. These problems caused by differential axial shortening affects the behaviors and can damage the important structure member in the high-rise buildings. Hence, the effects of the systems on differential axial shortening between the vertical elements in high-rise buildings are studied.

  • This paper discusses a series of experiments including material improvement in order to ensure quality of grouting for the post-tensioned structure. In prestressed concrete, grouting refers to the construction procedure of filling empty space of duct enclosing with strands using cementitious material, To date, adequate quality control of the grouting has not been established in Korea because the relationship between the grouting and durability of post-tensioned structure is not well-recognized. The Korean standard does not consider the important material characteristic, wick effect, which is caused by strands in the ducts and current standard testing method unlikely quantify reasonable material segregation. As a result, the grout material, which meets the current material standards, may exhibit excessive bleeding water or shrinkage during construction. In this study, international codes and standards related to grouting were surveyed. The ratio of constituents and novel admixtures were suggested to meet equivalently with these standards. Performance of this enhanced grout was compared to common domestic grout using the international standard testing method. A series of mock-up specimens considering geometry of PC beam was constructed and grout flow pattern was observed as the grout was injected. It was observed that the grouting performance was highly influenced by material properties and filling characteristic can be varied depending on geometry of ducts.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on long-term behavior of square CFT columns with diaphragm. In order to investigate the effect of the diaphragm on the long~term behavior, experiments for six specimens with two diaphragms and three different column length, and three-dimensional finite element analysis for each specimen have been performed. The finite element models considering the interface behavior between the steel tube and the inner concrete were verified from comparison of the test results with the analysis results. From the test and the analysis results, the following conclusions were obtained. The confinement effect created by the diaphragm does not depends on column length and influences only a part of the whole column that is from the end to the depth which is the same to the width of the column. The shortening of the column with diaphragm which covers more than a half of the cross sectional area of the inner concrete is the same as that of the column under a load applied on the steel tube and the entire section of the inner concrete.

  • This study is intended to predict the seismic behavior of the down-scaled 3-story steel frame structures subjected to the real ground motion, and evaluate their structural damage through advanced finite element (FE) analysis results. The FE frame models are designed by considering the effect of the soft story. In addition, the effect of structural asymmetry is also taken into consideration during the nonlinear dynamic analyses. After observing the analysis results, it is reconfirmed that the damage of the steel frame building under the ground motion should be governed by the soft story column rather than the structural mass asymmetry.

  • In this paper, the prediction method of the differential column shortening for cracked reinforced concrete tall buildings due to the construction sequence is presented. The cracked sectional properties from the strain and curvature of the sectional centroid is directly used. And the stiffness matrix of concrete elements considering the axial strain-curvature interaction effect is adopted. The creep and shrinkage properties used in the predictions were calculated in accordance with ACI 209, CEB-FIP 1990, and B3 model code. In order to demonstrate the validity of this algorithm, the prediction by the proposed method are compared with both the results of the in-situ test and the results by other simplified method. The proposed method is in good agreement with experimental results, and better than the simplified method.

  • Passage of time axial shortening in the cores and columns of tall concrete buildings requires special attention to ensure proper behavior for strength of the structure and the nonstructural element. The effects of column shortening, both elastic and inelastic, take on added significance and need special consideration in design and construction with increased height of structures. In this paper, the compensation method of column shortening for reinforced concrete structure are introduced. It could be concluded that the survey is a significant factor for the compensation instance of column shortening.

  • The effect of column shortening is a major consideration in design and construction of tall buildings, especially in concrete and composite structural systems. To avoid unexpected demage in structural and nonstructural elements, differential shortening between vertical members resulting from differing stress levels, loading histories, volume-to-surface ratios and other factors in a high-rise building must be properly considered in the design process. This paper represents analyzed and measured shortening results of RC cores and columns at the 72 story Haeundae I'Park. It shows that WACS program based on ACI and PCA material model is effective for the prediction of column shortening.

  • Differential shortening of vertical members in high-rise buildings affect other structural members that have to be considered such as horizontal members and exterior cladding. of many elements which affect the total amount of shortening, different loading history mainly comes from the different construction time. Shortening of 66 story concrete columns were investigated and compared according to the different construction time, little difference was found between the total shortening of interior and that of exterior column.
