  • Accurate prediction of time-dependent column shortening is essential for tall buildings in both strength and serviceability aspects. The uncertainty associated with assumed values for concrete properties such as strength, creep, and shrinkage coefficients should be considered for the prediction of time-dependent column shortening of tall concrete buildings. In this study, the column shortenings of 41-story tall concrete building are predicted using monte carlo simulation technique based on the probabilistic analysis. The probabilistic column shortenings considering confidence intervals are compared with the actual column shortenings by field measurement. The time-dependent strains measured at tall bearing wall building were generally lower than the predicted strains and the measured values fell within a range ${\mu}-1.64$, confidence level 90%.

  • This study presents the optimal grouping technique of columns which groups together columns of similar shortening trends to improve the efficiency of column shortening compensation. Here, Kohonen's self-organizing feature map which can classify patterns of input data by itself with unsupervised learning was used as the optimal grouping algorithm. The Kohonen network applied in this study is composed of two input neurons and variable output neurons, here the number of output neuron is equal to the column groups to be classified. In input neurons the normalized mean and standard deviation of shortening of each columns are inputted and in the output neurons the classified column groups are presented. The applicability of the proposed algorithm was evaluated by applying it to the two buildings where column shortening analyses had already been performed. The proposed algorithm was able to classify columns with similar shortening trends as one group, and from this we were able to ascertain the field-applicability of the proposed algorithm as the optimal grouping of column shortening.

  • According to the available study and experimental data about the long term behavior of CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) columns, the creep and of concrete in CFT columns are smaller than those of RC columns because of the confinement effect of outer steel columns. In this study, the uncertainties associated with assumed values for concrete properties such as strength, creep coefficients, and service load have been considered and analyzed for the prediction of time-dependent column shortening of CFT column. The CFT column shortening analysis using Monte Carlo method is proposed and an of a 37 story tall building with CFT columns is studied for illustration. According to the results obtained by the probability analysis with multi parameters, the effect of variation coefficient for 3 parameters is investigated considering confidence interval.

  • This study presents graphic-user interface computer program for optimal compensation of differential column shortening with high field applicability. The implemented system can perform both relative and mixed compensation while satisfying both performance and construction constraints. In the proposed system the shape of the structure before and after compensation can be checked graphically, and the results of compensation of each stories can be printed in drawings which can be directly used as the report of column shortening. The field-applicability of the implemented system was verified by applying it to the four reinforced concrete residental buildings of 61, 42, 49 and 53 stories where compensation of differential column shortening had already been performed. Using the implemented system, compensation can be performed easily with the various constraint conditions and was able to acquire rational compensation results for the cases where conventional method was not successful.

  • The necessity of a high-rise building in big cities gave a new problem to structural engineers. The shortening effect of vertical members needs special considerstion in the desigh and construction of high-rise buildings. The shortening of each column transfers load to nonstructural members such as partitions, cladding, and M/E systems which are not designed to carry gravity loads. Also, the slabs and beams will tilt due to the cumulative differential shortening of adjacent vertical members. The main purpose of estimating the total shortening of vertical structural members is to compensate the differential shortening between adjacent members. This paper presents the structural effect of differential shortening between in main structural members. Lateral earthquake load is applied to the 52 story concrete structure which has an initial vertical displacement due to the gravity load. Shortening amount for each vertical member was estimated using the computerized column shortening software. Comparison of stresses between the shortening corrected structure and the uncorrecated structure due to earthquake load was discussed.

  • Although steel-reinforced concrete(SRC) is widely used in a high-rise building, a methods used to predict the column shortening of SRC structural members has many problems in applying a theoretical equation which considers only the material characteristics of reinforced concrete. In this study, the degree of accuracy of the existing method calculating the column shortening of a high-rise building is examined. For this, first, the actual measurement data are chosen about the column shortening of a high-rise building established with SRC structural members. Then the column shortening of a SRC structural member is calculated through computer program. Finally, the comparison between the measurement data and the analytical ones is executed. According to this study, it can be concluded that there is little difference between the former and the latter. Therefore, the existing method can be used to evaluate the column shortening of a high-rise building using a SRC structural members.

  • This study presents optimal compensation algorithm of differential column shortening for more than two column groups. The proposed algorithm produces the minimum story groups and their compensation thicknesses which satisfy constraint conditions on performance and construction and enables not only the relative compensation but also the mixed compensation considering absolute shortening. The simulated annealing algorithm is used as the main optimization technique. The applicability of the proposed algorithm was verified by applying it to the 61-storey building where compensation of differential column shortening had already been performed. Using, the proposed algorithm compensation was performed easily and the number of compensation was less than the field method.

  • With the recent emergence of high rise buildings, this study was conducted in order to examine shortening, which has been used only in civil engineering structures, in such buildings. Examination of the shortening of vertical members is basically focused on deformations caused by load applied to concrete, material characteristics, etc. Shortening is analyzed through calculating parameters from the factors or characteristics of concrete, but analysis in the aspect of material tests has been somewhat unsatisfactory. Thus, this study purposed to analyze basic material test items for correcting the shortening of vertical members, namely, columns, to determine the reliability of material tests before parameter calculation for correcting shortening, and to examine the performance of material tests.
