  • For stealth performance consideration, many UAV designs are adopting tailless lambda-shaped configurations which are likely to have unsteady dynamic characteristics. In order to control such UAVs through automatic flight control system, more accurate estimation of dynamic stability derivatives becomes essential. In this paper, dynamic stability derivatives of a tailless lambda-shaped UAV are estimated through numerically simulated forced oscillation method incorporating dynamic mesh technique. First, the methodology is validated by benchmarking the CFD results against previously published experimental results of the Standard Dynamics Model(SDM). The dependency of initial angle of attack, oscillation frequency and oscillation magnitude on the dynamic stability derivatives of a tailless UAV configuration is then studied. The results show reasonable agreements with experimental reference data and prove the validity and efficiency of the concept of using CFD to estimate the dynamic derivatives.

  • A canard-leading edge flap deflection scheduling laws have been established to enhance the maneuverability of the canard type fighter class aircraft. These scheduling laws are the relation of canard-leading edge flap deflections and flight conditions to maximize the lift-drag ratio. For these purposes, the corrected supersonic panel method has been used to predict the lift-drag characteristics due to canard-leading edge flap deflections. In addition, the high speed wind tunnel test has been conducted with 1/20 scale model to validate the predicted scheduling laws. Good agreements have been obtained compared with the results of high speed wind tunnel test. Based on the results obtained from the experimental and numerical studies, the corrected supersonic panel method has shown to be useful to establish the canard-leading edge flap deflection scheduling law for the aerodynamic design of canard type fighter class aircraft.

  • Although the physiological roles of calretinin have not been established, it may simply work as a calcium buffer or may actively work in calcium-mediated signal transduction. Calretinin plays a little role in the transport and physiological buffering of calcium in the adult photoreceptor cells, bipolar cells and horizontal cells of the human retina. We identified the calretinin-immunoreactive neurons in the inner nuclear cell layer and ganglion cell layer and the distribution pattern of the labeled neurons in the retina of a bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, in this study. We observed the existence of calretinin-immunoreactive AII amacrine cell in the inner nuclear layer and ganglion cells in the ganglion cell layer of bat retina through this study. This observation must be significant along with our previous studies as we need to study for more understanding about the unsolved issue of a bat vision and the unique behavioral aspects of bat flight maneuverability.

  • Mid-course trajectory of the missiles equipped with seeker should be designed to detect target within FOV of seeker and to maximize the maneuverability at the point of transition to terminal guidance phase. Because the trajectory optimization problems are generally hard to obtain the analytic solutions due to its own nonlinearity with several constraints, the various numerical methods have been presented so far. In this paper, mid-course trajectory optimization problem for boost-glide missiles is calculated by using SOCP (Second-Order Cone Programming) which is one of convex optimization methods. At first, control variable augmentation scheme with a control constraint is suggested to reduce state variables of missile dynamics. And it is reformulated using a normalized time approach to cope with a free final time problem and boost time problem. Then, partial linearization and lossless convexification are used to convexify dynamic equation and control constraint, respectively. Finally, the results of the proposed method are compared with those of state-of-the-art nonlinear optimization method for verification.

  • Reaction Control System of the third stage of the Korean Space Launch Vehicle II conducts roll control and 3 axis control throughout third stage engine start, satellite separation, and collision and contamination avoidance maneuver. Reaction control system consumes its propellant in each thruster operation. Hence, loading of proper amount of the propellant is important for mission success. It is needed to have a rough estimation method of propellant consumption during the flight. In this paper, we developed a energy equation using pressure and temperature data which are acquired in the on-board reaction control system. We constructed a test system which is similar with the on-board reaction control system to verify the energy equation. Test results using deionized water were compared with estimated propellant consumption. We also conducted an error analysis of the energy equation. We also presented the propellant consumption result of a system level operation test.

  • This is the study to conduct the topographical analysis using the orthophotographic data from the waypoint flight using the UAV and constructed the system required for the automatic waypoint flight using the multicopter.. The results of the waypoint photographing are as follows. First, result of the waypoint flight over the area of 9.3ha, take time photogrammetry took 40 minutes in total. The multicopter have maintained the certain flight altitude and a constant speed that the accurate photographing was conducted over the waypoint determined by the ground station. Then, the effect of the photogrammetry was checked. Second, attached a digital camera to the multicopter which is lightweight and low in cost compared to the general photogrammetric unmanned airplane and then used it to check its mobility and economy. In addition, the matching of the photo data, and production of DEM and DXF files made it possible to analyze the topography. Third, produced the high resolution orthophoto(2cm) for the inside of the river and found out that the analysis is possible for the changes in vegetation and topography around the river. Fourth, It would be used for the more in-depth research on landscape analysis such as terrain analysis and visibility analysis. This method may be widely used to analyze the various terrains in cities and rivers. It can also be used for the landscape control such as cultural remains and tourist sites as well as the control of the cultural and historical resources such as the visibility analysis for the construction of DSM.

  • This paper is a study on design improvement of rotorcraft horizontal stabilizer. The rotorcraft horizontal stabilizer stabilizes the behavior of the pitch, yaw, etc. from the aircraft. Because of this role, horizontal stabilizers are a major component (Flight Safety Part) that affects flight safety on rotorcraft. However, when the rotorcraft was operated in domestic, cracks were found in the inner structure of the horizontal stabilizer and design improvement was needed. In this paper, we identified the two causes of the horizontal stabilizer crack defects through fracture analysis and structural analysis. The first is the tightening torque when the bolt is tightened, and the second is the lead-lag behavior of aircraft. In order to improve these two causes, bolt fastening method, flange structure and thickness were changed and composite ring was applied. In order to verify the design improvement, the structural analysis was performed and the structural strength was improved. Also Fatigue analysis of the internal structure (Rib 1) was performed and it was confirmed that the requirements were satisfied.

  • A basic study was conducted on how to determine the launch timing of a space probe targeting an Earth-approaching asteroid. In the future, when a probe mission targeting an asteroid approaching Earth's orbit is conducted in Korea, in order to determine the launch time, an appropriate solution should be obtained by applying the Global Optimization technique. For this, accurate current orbit information of each asteroid must be obtained first, and prior scenarios such as Earth's orbit information, main engine performance information of the probe and launch vehicle, the number of gravity-assisted maneuvers, and maximum flight time limit should be discussed. Also, the criteria for optimization should be determined first. In this paper, based on these prerequisites and information, a method for finding the launch time of an asteroid probe was studied using the open source software such as PyKEP and Evolutionary Mission Trajectory Generator (EMTG) which are the programs for interplanetary trajectory generation purpose.

  • The present study was conducted by using fast-responding PSP technique to measure the surface pressure on a small-scale rotor blade in hover. Also, the study was performed to verify the accuracy and investigate its possibility of PSP application for rotor blade pressure measurement. Pulsed laser which has 532 nm wavelength was used as a light source. Lifetime measurement technique was applied. Also, the coated paint on a rotor blade was porous PSP which has faster response time than conventional PSP. The blades had NACA0012 airfoils. The length of rotor blade was 340 mm and chord was 40 mm with rectangular shape 1 set, and 4 sets had several tip sweepback angles. The measured results qualitatively showed that the upper surface pressure decreases with increasing the collective pitch angle. Quantitative pressure coefficients of PSP results were higher approximately 0.4 to 0.7 than the pressure tap data of the NASA experiment.

  • This paper examines the design for improving the wiper system of rotorcraft. During rotorcraft operation, the wiping performance and excessive clearance can decrease. The wiper system consists of a wiper arm assembly, motor, convertor and flex drive. If there is a problem with the wiper system, the operation ability decreases because the operation is restricted in a rainy environment. There are two main causes of the problem of the wiper system: the lifting forces acting on the wiper arm in aircraft flight and the excessive gap of the components. To remedy these two problems, the wiper arm was improved. The improvements included increased contact pressure on the wiper arm (spring tension), improved gear clearance, and material and shape changes. Durability test, aircraft ground test and flight test were carried out to verify the improved shape, and it was confirmed that the wiping performance and clearance problems were solved. Currently, the rotorcraft is operated without problem by applying the improved shape, and this design improvement process will be a useful reference for future rotorcraft development.
