  • Recently, product research has been continuously conducted to enhance accessibility to blood pressure measurement for the purpose of healthcare for the chronic patient. In previous studies, electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoelectric pulse wave (PPG) are analyzed to calculate systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The problem is the development of analysis algorithms for accuracy and reproducibility. In this study, in the development stage of a micro blood pressure measuring device, the size of the device was reduced and the measurement method was simplified, while the algorithm was to extract systolic blood pressure (SBP) using only two PPGs and obtain diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The difference value of PPG, DF_P, is inversely related to SBP, and has a proportional relationship with DBP, which can be leaked by algorithm, and DBP can be tracked through SBP.

  • This paper presents a method for predicting blood pressure using the photoplethysmography signals. First, after measuring the optical blood flow signal, artifacts are removed through a preprocessing process, and a signal for learning is obtained. In addition, weight and height, which affect blood pressure, are measured as additional information. Next, a system is built to estimate systolic and diastolic blood pressure by learning the photoplethysmography signals, height, and weight as input variables through an artificial intelligence algorithm. The constructed system predicts the systolic and diastolic blood pressures using the inputs. The proposed method can continuously predict blood pressure in real time by receiving photoplethysmography signals that reflect the state of the heart and blood vessels, and the height and weight of the subject in an unconstrained method. In order to confirm the usefulness of the artificial intelligence-based blood pressure prediction system presented in this study, the usefulness of the results is verified by comparing the measured blood pressure with the predicted blood pressure.

  • This study investigated the effects of a spinal thermal massage device on physical and mental relaxation in office workers. Fifteen participants in their 30s and 40s used the device at home for 40 minutes, five times a week, for one month. Subjective measures, including fatigue, stress, muscle pain, blood circulation, indigestion, and insomnia, were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before and after the intervention. Objective measures included blood pressure (diastolic/systolic) and pulse pressure. The results showed significant reductions in fatigue (-51.5%), muscle pain (-49.6%), blood circulation difficulties (-23.1%), and stress (-20.9%), with trends suggesting reductions in insomnia (-20%) and indigestion (-7.4%). Systolic blood pressure significantly decreased, with tendencies for reductions in diastolic blood pressure and pulse pressure. In conclusion, the spinal thermal massage device appeared to promote physical and mental relaxation by combining thermotherapy and massage, likely activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of several filling methods using strain gauges. In this study, a light-emitting diode(LED) curing unit(Elipar Freeligh2, 3M EPSE, USA) and plasma arc lamp(PAL) curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) were used for curing, Filtek $Z350^{TM}$(3M EPSE, USA) composite resin was used for the cavity filling. Sixty permanent bicuspid teeth, that were extracted for orthodontic treatment, were studied. The cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface and were filled using the following methods : 1) bulk filling, 2) parallel filling, 3) oblique filling The strain was recorded on the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces and the strain values were computed into stress values. The shear bond strength of each filling method was tested using a Micro Universal Testing machine. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain changes, all LED and PAL curing groups showed an increase on the buccal surface and a slow decrease as time elapsed. 2. In the strain changes of the mesial and distal surfaces, the decreases and increases were shown repeatedly and reduced as time elapsed. 3. There were no significant statistical strain changes among filling methods in the LED or PAL curing groups. 4. There were significant statistical strain changes between the LED and PAL curing groups on the buccal surface(p<0.05). 5. From the shear bond strength results, in the LED curing group, filling method 3 showed lower surface stress than filling method 1 and 2(p<0.05). In the PAL curing group, there were no significant statistical strain changes between each filling method. 6. The surface stress of each group was lower than the shear bond strength.

  • Background: The aim of our study was to assess the extent of regression of left ventricular mass after aortic valve replacement in isolated aortic regurgitation. Material and Method: Retrospective analysis of echocardiographic data was collected preoperative and postoperative 1 year. There were 20 patients (12 males, 8 females, mean age $55.8{\pm}11.8$ years, mean body surface area $1.64{\pm}0.19m^2$) with aortic regurgitation from 2002 through 2007. We studied the change of left ventricular ejection fraction, ventricular septum and left ventricular posterior wall thickness, and left vemtricular muscle index (LVMI). The control group was age matched with normal echocardiographic study results. Patients with combined surgery or infective endocarditis were excluded. Result: Seven cases of tissue valves and thirteen cases of mechanical valve were used. The valve sizes were 21 mm (3 cases), 23 mm (13 cases) and 25 mm (4 cases). The postoperative ($125.5{\pm}42g/m^2$) LVMI has decreased than preoperative LVMI ($212.3{\pm}80g/m^2$, p=0.000) but higher than that of control group ($80.5{\pm}15.9g/m^2$, p=0.000). Postoperative septal wall (systolic/diastolic: $13.5{\pm}3.4mm/17.1{\pm}4.1mm$) and left ventricular posterior wall (systolic/diastolic: $12.9{\pm}3.4mm/16.7{\pm}3.4mm$) thickness were slightly decreased after the valve replacement but was not significantly different than preoperative levels. And postoperative interventricular septal wall and left ventricular posterior wall thickness (systolic/diastolic: $8.6{\pm}1.4mm/12.1{\pm}1.7mm$, systolic/diastolic: $8.4{\pm}1.4mm/13.2{\pm}1.9mm$) were higher than that of the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: The significant regression of LVMI after aortic valve replacement developed at postoperative one year but the level was higher than control group. The main cause of decreased LVMI is decreased in left ventricular dimension.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate a relationship between the blood concentrations of toxic metals and the blood pressure in people living near the copper smelter. Methods: The study included 570 adults living within 4km of the smelter. We compared systolic and diastolic blood pressure between tertiary groups for blood cadmium, mercury and lead levels, respectively. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors affecting systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Results: In male subjects, there is a significant difference in the mean of systolic and diastolic blood pressure between tertiary groups of blood cadmium and mercury levels, but in women, there was no significant difference in the mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures in all tertiary groups of heavy metals. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that age, BMI, and cadmium concentration in men were risk factors for blood pressure. In women, age and BMI, drinking and smoking, and blood mercury were significantly influenced to blood pressure. Conclusions: Residents living near the Janghang smelter showed high concentrations of blood lead and cadmium, suggesting that they were exposed to high concentrations of heavy metals released from the smelter in the past. Such exposure may have caused some blood pressure increase. Especially, the concentration of cadmium in the case of men and the concentration of mercury in blood in the case of women were found to be significantly related to the increase of blood pressure. The local population should be advised to make efforts to reduce exposure to environmental contaminants, in order to minimize cardiovascular disease, and to pay close attention to any health problems possibly related to toxic metal exposure.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute aerobic exercise at different intensities on the blood pressure, blood lipids and fibrinolytic markers in pre-hypertension college-aged males. Six subjects performed an acute running exercise at three different intensities(low intensity(LI): 50-60% heart rate reserve(HRR), moderate intensity(MI): 60-70%HRR, and high intensity(HI): 70-80%HRR). The blood pressure(systolic(SBP) and diastolic blood pressure(DBP), blood lipids(total cholesterol(TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)) and fibrinolytic markers(tissue plasminogen activator(tPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1)) were determined before(PRE), immediately after(POST) and 60minutes after the exercise(60 POST). Results: the SBP in the LI group was significantly increased at POST(p=0.013). The ES levels for the SBP in the MI and HI groups were reduced (-1.33 and -1.23, respectively), though the differences were not significant. The HDL in the MI(p=0.003) and HI(p=0.002) groups were significantly increased at 60 POST. Also, the tPA in the MI(p=0.021) and HI(p=0.042) groups were significantly increased at POST.

  • In this paper, an ECG-NIBP patient monitor is designed. This is an essential equipment to measure and monitor patient's physical condition - electrocardiogram(ECG) wave, heart rate(HR), and noninvasive blood pressure(NIBP) - in ICU, CCU, and operating room. The ECG is an electrical waveform produced by relaxation and contraction of the cardiac muscle. Most physicians diagnose patient's cardiac states from ECG pattern. A blood pressure is one of the clinical indexes measured in a emergency room or operating room. In this paper, the blood pressure is measured in artery by using the nonivasive oscillometric method. The developed patient monitor was inspected and compared with other instruments in operating rooms. The results were 1bpm of maximum difference in the heart rate, 15mmHg in the systolic pressure, 16mmHg in the diastolic pressure, and 25mmHg in the mean blood pressure. But the total results were 0.15bpm of the mean difference in the heart rate, 5mmHg in the systolic pressure, 10mmHg in the diastolic pressure, and 9mmHg in the mean blood pressure. The designed ECG-NIBP patient monitor can measure the ECG wave, HR, and BP. And the multi-tasking module of pulse oximetry . respiration . temperature monitor will be added in the near future.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the artificial shrinkage and assisted hatching (PZD; patial zona dissetion) before vitrification on the development of vitrified mouse expanding blastocyst. Methods: Mouse 2-cell embryos were collected and cultured in G1.1 and G2.2 to expanding blastocyst. For artificial shrinkage (AS) the micro injection pipette was inserted into blastocoele cavity and blastocoele fluid was aspirated. For assisted hatching (AH) PZD method was used. Control group was -AS/-AH and treatment groups were -AS/+AH, +AS/-AH and +AS/+AH. After AS and AH mouse blastocysts were equillibrated in G10 and G10E20 for 3 mins, respectively, and vitrified in G25E25 after loading on capped pulled-straw. Vitrified mouse blastocysts were thawed and cultured for 24 hrs. The survival and hatching rate was compared among one control and three treatment groups. Results: The survival rates were 99%, 92% in +AS/+AH and +AS/-AH groups and 54%, 58% in -AS/-AH and -AS/+AH group, respectively. The survival rate was significantly higher in +AS group than in -AS group (p<0.01). Hatching rates were 34%, 96% in -AS/-AH and -AS/+AH groups and 41%, 100% in +AS/-AH and +AS/+AH, respectively. The hatching rates was higher in +AH group than in -AH group (p<0.01). After thawing recovery rates were 100%. Loading on capped pulled-straw, that is effective and useful method on vitrification. Conclusion: This study showed that artificial shrinkage of blastocoele cavity and assisted hatching (PZD) significantly improved the development of the vitrified mouse expanding blastocysts.
