  • This paper is the second paper among two papers which constitute the paper about the rigid body dynamic analysis on the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister under accidental drop and impact to the ground. This paper performed the numerical study on the rigid body dynamic analysis. Through this study the impulsive force which is occurring in the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister under accidental drop and impact to the ground and required for the structural safety design of the canister is computed numerically. The main content of this numerical study is about the technical method how to compute the impulsive forces occurring in the canister under accidental drop and impact to the ground by using the commercial rigid body dynamic analysis computer codes. On the basis of this study the impulsive force which is occurring in the canister in the case of collision with the ground is numerically computed. This numerically computed impulsive force is increasing as the canister weight is increasing, and the canister falls plumb down and collides with the ground in three types according to the analysis results.

  • This paper presents the analytical closed form solution for the impact load of a collision between rigid bodies and its application to a spent nuclear fuel disposal canister accidentally dropped and impacted on the ground. This paper performed a study on the numerical rigid body dynamic analysis to compute the impact load between two rigid bodies, especially, the impulsive force which is applied to the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister in the accidental drop and impact event on the ground. Through this study the impulsive force which is occurring in the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister under accidental drop and impact event on the ground and required in the process of structural safety design of the canister is computed numerically. The main content of this numerical study is about the technical method how to compute the impulsive force applied to the canister under the accidental drop and impact event on the ground by using the commercial computer code for the rigid body dynamic analysis. On the basis of this study a problem to compute the impulsive force which is occurring in the canister in the case of collision with the ground is numerically treated. This numerically computed impulsive force is compared with the theoretical value, which shows a good agreement.

  • Free-piston Stirling engines (FPSEs) have attracted much attention in the renewable energy field as a key device in the conversion from thermal to mechanical energy, and in the recycling of waste energy. Traditional Stirling engines consist of two pistons that are connected by a mechanical link, while FPSEs are formed as a vibration system by connecting each piston to a spring without a physical link. To ensure the correct design and control of operations, this requires elaborate dynamic-performance predictions. In this paper, we present the performance-prediction methodology using a linear and nonlinear dynamic analytical model considering the external load of FPSEs. We perform linear analyses to predict the operating point of the engine using the root locus technique. Using nonlinear analysis, we also predict the amplitude of pistons by performing numerical integration considering both the linear and nonlinear damping terms of the external load. We utilize the predicted dynamic behavior to predict the engine performance. In addition, we compare the experiment results and existing model predictions for RE-1000 to verify the reliability of the analytical model.

  • This paper discusses an energy system that can convert wave energy into electrical energy. This wave energy generation system is movable and has 12 arms and one generator. A multibody dynamic model for this system is established by using kinematic constraints. A gear mechanism, several kinematic constraints, and force elements are included in the model. Wave forces are obtained numerically from the time domain formulation based on the Morison equation. The MSC/ADAMS program is employed to carry out dynamic analysis of the wave energy generation system. The dynamic behavior responses of this system are analyzed for design verification. According to the results of the dynamic analysis, the yaw motion is relatively stable and kinetic energy sufficient to generate electrical energy is obtained when the wave height exceeds 1m.

  • A numerical approach for performing kinematic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems is presented. Compared with the conventional analytical methods, which require explicit derivation of sensitivity equations, the proposed numerical method can be applied to any type of suspension systems without obtaining sensitivity equations, once any kinematic analysis procedure is established. To obtain sensitivity equations, a numerical differentiation algorithm that uses the third order Lagrange polynomial is developed. The algorithm efficiently and accurately computes the sensitivity of various vehicle static design factors with respect to kinematic design variables. Through a suspension design problem, the validity and usefulness of the method is demonstrated.

  • In this study, new shock absorbing system is proposed by using nano-technology based on the theoretical analysis. The new shock absorbing system is complementary to the hydraulic damper, having a cylinder-piston-orifice construction. Particularly for new shock absorbing system, the hydraulic oil is replaced by a colloidal suspension, which is composed of a porous matrix and a lyophobic fluid. The matrix of the suspension is consisted of porous micro-grains with a special architecture: they present nano-pores serially connected to micro-cavities. Until now, only experimentally qualitative studies of new shock absorbing system have been performed, but the mechanism of energy dissipation has not been clarified. This paper presents a modeling and theoretical analysis of the new shock absorbing system thermodynamics, nono-flows and energy dissipation. Compared with hydraulic system, the new shock absorbing system behaves more efficiently, which absorb a large amount of mechanical energy, without heating. The theoretical computations agree reasonably well with the experimental results. As a result. the proposed new shock absorbing system was proved to be an effective one, which can replace with the conventional one.
