  • Objectives: The purposes of this study were to examine the contribution of each of the Transtheoretical Model components in explaining stages of smoking cessation and to identify factors associated with the smoking cessation behavior among Korean college students. Methods: The participants for this study were 334 undergraduate students who enrolled in general education courses. Self-report surveys were distributed and returned. The survey variables comprised the stages of change for smoking cessation, self-efficacy, decisional balances and processes of change in smoking cessation. Results: Significant differences were noted in the five stages of change for self-efficacy, decisional balance, and the processes of change. The strongest factor associated with the smoking cessation behavior was self-efficacy. Conclusion: Study findings indicate application of the Transtheoretical Model may be useful to enhance future smoking cessation efforts in college students. The strategies to enhance smoking cessation self-eficacy in college students will be an important intervention component in future studies.

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the smoking and non-smoking experiences of male adolescents in high school. Data were collected through focus group interviews with 16 participants. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Six themes emerged as a result of the analysis. "Imitating adults with curiosity" delineates first smoking experiences of participants. "Repulsion of cigarettes after first smoking" describes changes in participants' attitude toward smoking after first experience and "Resumed smoking" illustrates re-smoking process to be a peer group and test the taste of cigarettes. "Environmental risks of adolescents smoking" depicts adolescents easily exposed to cigarettes. "Conflicts between smoking and quitting smoking" describes repeated tries to quit smoking and re-smoking processes. Lastly "Reasons of non-smoking for non-smoking adolescents" illustrates the reasons for their non-smoking. Smoking and non-smoking experiences of male high school students' are different from those of female students and adults. Based on the results of the study, programs for preventing smoking and non-smoking education should be designed and executed for male adolescents to improve their health.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the process of smoking cessation behavior in adults with a history of smoking cessation. The subject were 17 adults selected by theoretical sampling. The data were collected by in-depth interviews using audiotape recording over a period of six months. The data were analyzed simultaneously by a constant comparative method in which new data were continuously coded in categories and properties according to Strauss and Corbin' methodology. Analysis of the data resulted in the identification of 12 categories. The result of this study are as follows : 1. Smoking cessation in adults is caused by fear about health, environmental pressure of smoking cessation, and intention of smoking cessation. 2. Smoking cessation occurs in connection with situations of limited smoking 3. Maintenence of smoking cessation is related to psychological stress, and environmental cues to smoking. 4. In the smoking cessation process, adults experienced either health promotion or relapse. It is suggested that the result of this study may contributed to the development of a strategy for decreasing smoking behavior among adults.

All 137 subjects were surveyed by structured questionnaire with convenience sampling. The distribution and correlation of attitude, behavior, and intervention were evaluated by both frequency test and ANOVA test. 75.2% of total subjects responded that the dental staff should give a model through prohibition of smoking and 66.5% responded that tobacco cessation activities should be responsibility of the dental staff. Tobacco cessation counsel was performed by little but with positive attitude. Advice method of tobacco cessation was used to counsel on tobacco cessation (68.6%). The dentists (48.2%) and dental hygienists (23.4%) were responded adequate for the tobacco cessation counselor, however, it was shown that the dentist had lower level of attitude about tobacco cessation than dental hygienist (p<0.01). The dental staff needs to participate in the tobacco cessation counseling program more regularly and actively. In order for the dental staffs gets the counsel effectively and intervene with tobacco cessation, it is essential that the education of tobacco cessation is integrated in dental school. Furthermore, it is necessary for the dental staffs to take continuing education for more effective understanding of tobacco cessation.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the information needs and information seeking behavior of consumers who attempted to quit or maintain the ceasing of smoking and analyze the effects of the health information obtained at different stages. In particular, we examined how consumers use mobile health applications(health apps) as aids to change unhealthy behaviors and how their use of health apps influence health behavior changes. For 7 months from December 2017 to July 2018, the researchers observed changes in smoking behaviors of college students who use smoking-cessation apps and conducted face-to-face interviews. Regarding the effects of smoking-cessation apps, the participants in the action stage reported that they were encouraged to quit smoking by visualized information such as the number of days of smoking cessation, change of health status, and the saving of money due to smoking cessation. The participants in the maintenance stage highlighted that smoking cessation apps were helpful in recognizing the importance and achievement of smoking cessation by sharing experiences and social support with other attempters in the app community. The study provided theoretical implications in the field of information behavior in that it identified the particular types of information needs and information-seeking behavior of the consumers who were using mobile apps in their behavior modification process. In addition, those findings can contribute to designing the contents of the smoking cessation apps that reflect the information needs of those who attempt to cease smoking and further suggest practical insights to health information services that promote effective information intervention strategies in health behavior change.
