  • A model was designed to identify wood species between Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. using the near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). In the PCA using all of the spectra, Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. could not be classified. In the PCA using the spectrum that has been measured in sapwood, however, Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. could be identified. In particular, it was clearly classified by sapwood in radial section. And more, these two species could be perfectly identified using PLS-DA prediction model. The best performance in species identification was obtained when the second derivative spectra was used; the prediction accuracy was 100%. For prediction model, the $R_p{^2}$ value was 0.86 and the RMSEP was 0.38 in second derivative spectra. It was verified that the model designed by NIR spectroscopy with PLS-DA is suitable for species identification between Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki and Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.

  • It was examined the key criterion of the time of property revelation as Uljin-Geumgangsong wood. For this purpose, we investigated in physical properties in pine wood (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) and representative Uljin-Geumgangsong wood (Pinus densiflora forma erecta Uyeki). The results are as follows; Air-dry density of Uljin-Geumgangsong wood have higher values over about 20 percent than that of pine wood. And also heartwood rate of Uljin-Geumgansong wood have higher values above 70 percent. The number of vertical resin canals per $1mm^2$ in Uljin-Geumgangsong wood was 40 percent greater than in pine wood. As the average diameters of axial resin canals were 67.8 mm and 67.3~69.9 mm in pine wood and in Uljin-Geumgangsong wood, respectively, there was no significant difference among wood species. There tends to be an increase in diameters as annual rings increase. The number of horizontal resin canals in Uljin-Geumgangsong-1 was approximately 55 percent greater than in pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangsong-2. The number of resin canals in pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangson-2 decreased while it increased in Uljin-Geumgangsong-1 as annual rings increased. No significant difference was found in the number of rays among wood species and between earlywood and latewood of same wood species. As annual rings increased the number of rays decreased in both pine wood and Uljin-Geumgangsong. The heights of rays were greater in pine wood than Uljin-Geumgangsong and no difference was found between earlywood and latewood. In conclusion, rings of tree for the time of property revelation as Uljin-Geumgangsong wood is assumed about more than 150 years.

  • This study was conducted to analyze correlation of above- and below-ground biomass and to drive regression equation suitable for estimating standing tree biomass between natural and planted stands of Pinus densiflora for. erecta of one age-class in Gangwon province, Republic of Korea. Total 40 trees, 10 from the naturally regenerated and 10 from the planted stands in each of two studied sites, were uprooted to measure height, diameter at root color (DRC), and the dry weights of stem, branches, and needles. The length, weight, and volume of the main and horizontal roots were also measured. Most of the above-ground traits except height were highly correlated with most of the other above-ground traits and the below-ground traits except the length of roots (p < 0.05). Especially, the DRC, which is measured easily on the standing tree, was highly correlated with most of the traits in all studied stands (p < 0.01). Thus, the DRC would be the most desirable trait to estimate not only above-ground biomass but also below-ground biomass. However, height was not a good variable to estimate standing tree biomass of Pinus densiflora for. erecta of one age-class in Gangwon province because it was not correlated with most of other traits. Regression equations derived from the current study could be used effectively as a basic data for estimating above-ground and below-ground biomass using DRC.

  • Thirty-six plots (each size 100m2) have been set up and surveyed to investigate the plant community structure and the ecological density of Pinus densiflora for. eracta(Chunyang-type) community in Seobyeok-ri, Chungyang-myeon, bonghwa-gun, Kyeongsangbuk-do. Four communities, Community I (large DBH class), Community II (large DBH class), Community III (middle DBH class), Community IV(small DBH class), were classified into by mean DBH and mean height. Pinus densiflora for. eracta dominate in canopy layer, Fraxinus sieboldiana and Quercus mongolica dominate in understory layer, Rhododendron Schlippenbachii and R. mucronulatum dominate in shrub layer. It turned out that thefour communiteis had low species diversity(0.4320~0.9487; unit: 400$m^2$) and high similarity. By the result of ecological density analysis. the mean basal area was proportionated to mean DBH (cm) size. By the result of simple regression analysis between mean DBH(cm), mean distance(m), and the number of individual were as follow: Ecological distance(m) = 0.0934$\times$ DBH(cm) +0.6117, Number of individual=242.47$\times$ DBH(cm)$^{-1.009}$, Ecological distance=9.643$\times$No. of individua $l^{-0.7016}$. In addition to four communities were suitable to the growth of Tricholoma matsutake because average species were about 30~50 years old, litter layer was 0.5~2.5cm and the ratio of coverage shrub was 20% .

  • This study was carried out to classify forest vegetation structure of Mt. Munsu and Mt. Okseok from May to September in 2008 using phytosociological analysis methodology of Z-M school under the purpose of furnishing basic materials for rational and scientific forest management. Total of one hundred five study sites (quadrats) was investigated in the area. Quercus mongolica community group was divided into 5 communities such as Pinus densiflora for. erecta community, Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata community, Salix gracilistyla community, Pinus koraiensis community and Larix kaempferi community. Pinus densiflora for. erecta community was subdivided into Rhododendron micranthum group, Quercus variabilis group and Pinus densiflora for. erecta typical group. Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata community also into Ligularia fischeri group, Deutzia glabrata group (into Juglans mandshurica subgroup, Prunus maackii subgroup and Callicarpa japonica subgroup). Accordingly, the vegetation of the study areas could be described as 1 community group, 5 communities, 5 groups, and 3 subgroups and as 10 units in total. Classified vegetation units were highly correlated with altitude and topography. According the analysis of interspecific association, it was shown as three types which were coincident with differential species and character species on the constancy table.

  • Based on a total of 272 vegetation data collected by the ZM school phytosociological study method, the composition and structural characteristics of the forest vegetation in the Sogwang-ri forest genetic resource reservoir located in Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do were compared using the table comparison method and the TWINSPAN method, And their ecological characteristics were analyzed. The types of forest vegetation were classified into 7 types, and it was divided into two major groups, 'Slope and Ridge type', which characterized by Quercus mongolica, Pinus densiflora for. erecta, Lespedeza bicolor etc. and 'valley and concave slope', which characterized by Cornus controversa, Fraxinus mandshurica, Morus bombycis, Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata etc. The hierarchy of the vegetation unit was 2 community groups, 4 communities, and 6 subcommunities. The structural characteristics such as the total percent cover, species importance value, species diversity of the constituent species per unit area($/100m^2$) of each type of forest vegetation were also identified. In order to understand the spatial distribution of forest vegetation, 1/5,000 large-scale physiognomic vegetation map was created by the uppermost dominant species. The composition and structural characteristics of Geumgang pine(P. densiflora for. erecta) forest, which is a core community of protected area by natural and anthropogenic influences, appear as a subtype of Quercus mongolica forest, which is a potential natural vegetation, Appropriate maintenance measures seemed urgently needed.

  • This research analyzed characteristics of networks among stakeholders related to forest trail management. Results of analysis showed that Jiri way and Uljin trail had council-led network. As both trails were supported by government, the government had much power to make decisions and manage trail. But parts that mediated differences of interests among various stakeholders were insufficient. To manage forest trails effectively, it is necessary that hub organization which can have networks and make decision considering different interests have to develop and it have to authorize hub organization to take a right role for management of forest trails.
