  • This in vitro study compared the remineralization of incipient interproximal caries in the presence of three glass ionomer cements (highly-filled glass ionomer cement, compomer, resin-modified glass ionomer cement) and a resin composite(control). The long-term changes in remineralization caused by each material were evaluated by microtomography. Proximal restoration was simulated by placing tooth specimens and the various glass ionomer cements in closed containers with artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0 for 30 days with constant circulation Tomographic images were obtained with a micro CT scanner at 90, 180, and 270 days, and density-measuring software was used to calculate the micro-density of artificial caries lesions in the specimens. The mean density changes were compared between groups in order to evaluate the effects of remineralization. All data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the post-HOC Tukey multiple comparison test at p<0.05. While the density of artificial caries lesions increased for all treatments, the increases for the three glass ionomer groups were significantly higher than that for the resin group in each three month period. As time went on, the amount of density increase of the glass ionomer groups decreased, and significant differences were found between the remineralization effects of the glass ionomer groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of light-tip distance on the shear bond strength of a visible light-cured glass ionomer cement(Fuji Ortho LC ; GC, Japan) cured with three different light curing units : a halogen light(Elipar Trilight ; 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany), a Light Emitting Diode (LED, Elipar Freelight2 ; 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) and a plasma arc light (Flipo ; LOKKI, France). 1. When used at a distance of 0mm from the bracket, the three light curing units showed no statistically different shear bond strengths. At distance of 3 and 6mm, no significant differences were found between the halogen and plasma arc lights, but both had significantly higher shear bond strengths than the LED light. 2. The halogen light and plasma arc light showed that no significant differences in bond strength were found among the three distances. Using the LED light, a greater light-tip distance produced significantly lower shear bond strengths.

  • This study was done to evaluate the shear bond strength between light-cured glass ionomer cement (GIC) base and resin cement for luting indirect resin inlay and to observe bonding aspects which is produced at the interface between them by SEM. Two types of light cured GIC (Fuji II LC Improved, GC Co. Tokyo, Japan and Vitrebond$^{TM}$, 3M, Paul Minnesota U.S.A) were used in this study. For shear bond test, GIC specimens were made and immersed in 37$^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 1 hour, 24 hours, 1 week and 2 weeks. Eighty resin inlays were prepared with Artglass$^{(R)}$ (Heraeus Kultzer Germany) and luted with Variolink$^{(R)}$ II (Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Shear bond strength of each specimen was measured and fractured surface were examined. Statistical analysis was done with one-way ANOVA. Twenty four extracted human third molars were selected and Class II cavities were prepared and GIC based at axiopulpal lineangle. The specimens were immersed in 37$^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 1 hour, 24 hours, 1 week and 2 weeks. And then the resin inlays were luted to prepared teeth. The specimens were sectioned vertically with low speed saw. The bonding aspect of the specimens were observed by SEM (JSM-5400$^{(R)}$, Jeol, Tokyo, Japan) .There was no significant difference between the shear bond strength according to storage periods of light cured GIC base. And cohesive failure was mostly appeared in GIC On scanning electron micrograph, about 30 - 120 $\mu$m of the gaps were observed on the interface between GIC base and dentin. No gaps were observed on the interface between GTC and resin inlay.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of functional multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on the conventional glass ionomer cement(GIC). The MWCNT was incorporated into a commercial powder at 0.125, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 wt%. Specimens for vickers hardness(VHN) disks(Ø$10mm{\times}2mm$) each were prepared. Indention were made using a load of 200 N and 20 s dwell on four specimens for each distilled water storage time 1d, 7d, and 14days. The antibacterial effects using agar diffusion test with S. mutans and S. aureus. The diameters of the inhibition zones produced around the materials were measured. The results revealed that all the vickers hardness values were increase significantly with incubation time(p<0.05). Regarding the antibacterial effect for S. mutans, all the tested groups showed a slightly higher value not significantly with the control group(p<0.05). However S. aureus statistical analysis indicated a significant difference for antibacterial agents between control and MWCNT containing 0.25 wt%(p<0.05). These results of this study provide that the conventional GIC with containing MWCNT show good antibacterial effect against and favorable mechanical properties. Further this study on the efficient functionalization of multiwall carbon nanotube will be needed.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the restoration combined with resin infiltration (RI) of early cavitated smooth surface caries lesion in terms of microleakage. Flowable resin and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) were compared. Sound 20 extracted 3rd molars were divided into 2 groups randomly. Artificial decalcified lesion was induced. Cavities were prepared on the mesial and distal surfaces, and randomly set as experimental and control group. RI was applied to the experimental group before cavity restoration. The control group was restored without RI. In group I and II, flowable resin and RMGIC was used for restoration respectively. After thermocycling and silver nitrate immersion, microleakage was assessed by μ-CT. Depth of microleakage was lower in experimental group than control group only in group II (p = 0.05). Microleakage depth was lower in group II than group I in both experimental and control groups (p = 0.05). RI pretreatment before restoration of early cavitated caries lesions might reduce the microleakage and help long-term maintenance of restoration. In this study, RMGIC was less polymerization shrinkage. Restoration with RMGIC after RI pretreatment reduced the microleakage of the restoration compared to the flowable resin.

  • The aim of this study was to compare compressive strength and microhardness of recently introduced alkasite restorative materials with glass ionomer cement and flowable composite resin. For each material, 20 samples were prepared respectively for compressive strength and Vickers microhardness test. The compressive strength was measured with universal testing machine at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. And microhardness was measured using Vickers Micro hardness testing machine under 500 g load and 10 seconds dwelling time at 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 35 days. The compressive strength was highest in composite resin, followed by alkasite, and glass ionomer cement. In microhardness test, composite resin, which had no change throughout experimental periods, showed highest microhardness in 1 hour, 1 day, and 7 days measurement. The glass ionomer cement showed increase in microhardness for 7 days and no difference was found with composite resin after 14 days measurement. For alkasite, maximum microhardness was measured on 14 days, but showed gradual decrease.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporated nano HA on the demineralization resistance and bonding strength of LC GIC in comparison with micro HA. Fuji II LC GIC was used as the control group and a base material for experimental groups. Two experimental groups were prepared. One was prepared by adding 15% micro HA to LC GIC by weight ratio (Exp. 1), and the other was prepared by adding 15% nano HA instead (Exp. 2). According to the results, the following conclusions could be obtained. 1. Observing under the CLSM, the control group showed thicker enamel demineralization layer than in the experimental groups, and the Exp. 2 group showed the thinnest demineralization layer. 2. In SEM analysis, there was greater enamel demineralization in the control group. The Exp. 2 group was more resistant to demineralization compared to the Exp. 1 group. 3. The bonding strength was found to be in the increasing order of control, Exp. 1, and Exp. 2 group (p < 0.05). 4. Observing the fractured surfaces under SEM after the bonding strength test was performed, there were bone-like apatite particles formed in HA-added experimental groups, and a greater number of bone-like apatite particles were formed in the Exp. 2 group compared to the Exp. 1 group.

  • In recent years, a number of special treatment procedures have been introduced to reestablish new tooth supporting tissues with varying degrees of success including guided tissue regeneration(GTR), bone grafting(BG) and the use of enamel matrix derivative(EMD). EMD is an extract of enamel matrix and contains amelogenins of various molecular weights. Emdogain(EMD) might have some advantages over other methods of regenerating the tissue supporting teeth lost by gum disease, such as less postoperative complications. Emdogain contains proteins(derived from developing pig teeth) believed to regenerate tooth attachment. The decrease in probing depth after EMD treatment is achieved primarily by clinical attachment gain and bone regeneration and only to a minor extent by gingival recession. In conclsion, EMD seems to be safe, was able to regenerate lost periodontal tissues in previously diseased sites based on clinical parameters.
