  • This study was conducted to find out the changes of survival, respiration and organ structure of Tegillarca granosa exposed to copper (Cu). Experimental period was four weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three copper exposure conditions (0.125, 0.250 and 0.500 mg/L). The results of the study confirmed that copper induces reduction of survival rate and respiration rate and histopathology of organ structure of the bivalve. In the copper concentration of 0.500 mg/L, mortality was 66.7% after Cu exposure of 4 weeks. Respiration rate was observed exposure groups lower than control decline by 18%. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated degeneration of epithelial layer and connective tissue layer of the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial atrophy and disappearance of lateral cilia are recognized in the gill and it was observed expansion of hemolymph sinus, disruption of epithelial layer, acidification of mucous and degeneration of muscle fiber bundles in the foot. In the digestive diverticulum, it was showed atrophy and destruction of basophilic cell and epithelial cell in the digestive tubules.

  • The Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (inflammatory pseudotumor) is a rarely occurring soft tissue lesion of unknown etiology. It can be of any location, but commonly it is found in lungs. It has been considered as a nonneoplastic reactive inflammatory lesion, but nowadays, confusion and dispute about its character is increasing due to its high recurrence rate and metastasis. We present a patient who had been diagnosed with an inflammatory pseudotumor in the right maxilla area, 1 year before visiting our hospital. After that, her pain and swelling did not resolved and she visit our hospital. On radiographic examination, aggressively infiltrative growth of the lesion with destruction of adjacent bony structure was noted. We found unusual aggressiveness of the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the head and neck region. Because the typical behavior of the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is not defined yet, we recommend the surgical excision of the lesion and close follow-up.

  • The venomous apparatus of the black widow spider, Latrodectus mactans, is composed of chelicera and paired venom glands in the cephalothorax. Each glands is surrounded by a thin adventitia and striated muscular bundles resting on a basal membrane. Along the musculature neuromuscular synaptic contacts are formed by a motor axon and the muscle fibers. The secretory epithelium, which made up of simple and long columnar cells with extensive finger-like processes, creates a simple acinar gland. The secretory surfac is increased by a sort of fringes extended from the basal membrane into the gland lumen, and the luminal surface of the epithelium is marked by the presence of closely spaced microvilli. The venoms of the black widow spider are produced from two types of secretory granules within the epithelial cells. During the secretory phase, these granules are transformed into droplets and suffering a condensation. Finally the secretory products are released by the apocrine secretion. After the gland is emptied, the basal epithelial cells present a high proliferative process and regenerate the columnar epithlial cells.

  • This study is for the consideration of the existence tendency of Kudoa septempunctata in olive flounder. In general, muscle has shown a strong PCR positive reaction in spores containing tissues rather than non-containing tissues. However, blood PCR results showed opposed tendency. In various organs of the tested fish containing spores in muscle tissue, heart had shown positive reaction along with muscle at PCR analysis. Muscle fiber necrosis was observed at the histological observation, and this degeneration was common in both samples. The one sample was the PCR positive muscle containing spore and the other was the PCR positive muscle non-containing spore. Both of muscle tissues indicated a positive reaction at ISH (in-situ hybridization) against K. septempunctata.

  • Muscle atrophy refers to a decrease in muscle cells due to damage to muscle fibers. It is reported that muscle atrophy is caused by heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases related to aging. The purpose of this study is to reveal the inhibitory effects of seaweed extracts, which are widely consumed in Korea, and alginic acid on muscle cell damage in muscle atrophy and regeneration models. We found that seaweed extracts (U) and alginic acid (A) attenuated TNF-α-induced muscle atrophy in differentiated C2C12 myoblast cells and inhibited muscle atrophy markers such as MuRF1 and MAFbx. In addition, U and A also regulated ubiquitination marker FoxO1 protein. To confirm the muscle regeneration effect in animal tissue, cardiotoxin (CTX) was used for the regeneration model. Six hours after CTX injection, gastrocnemius muscle volume was increased compared to control. Otherwise, the muscle volume of the U and A treatment groups was not changed. U and A also upregulated regeneration markers MyHC and PGC-1α in a CTX mouse model. These results indicate that seaweed extracts and alginic acid, a seaweed component, are applicable to senile sarcopenia by inhibiting muscle loss and promoting muscle regeneration.

  • Leiomyoma is a common benign tumor from smooth muscle cells, mostly in the uterus. Peritoneal leiomyomas (PLs) are extremely rare and mostly reported as disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis. However, to the best of out knowledge, radiologic findings of isolated PL are not reported in English literature. Herein, we introduce the radiologic findings of PL mimicking hepatic mass in a 34-year-old female. CT showed a mass with curvilinear heterogeneous enhancement at the liver's peripheral area. On MRI, the mass showed gradual and heterogeneous enhancement on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and diffusion restriction. The radiologic diagnosis was a benign hepatic tumor, such as degenerated hemangioma, adenoma, and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor; however, the mass was diagnosed as PL pathologically.

  • Since the summer of the year 1972 ulcer disease of common carp, colour carp ana goldfish had suddenly spread widely and caused a serious mortality at fish farms especially around Gim-hae and Yang-san, near Busan. The present study aimed to find out the causative organisms, histopathological changes and the way of treatment, and the results are summarized as follows : Two kinds of pathogenic bacteria, i. e, Chondrococcus columnaris and Aeromonas sp. were isolated from the mucus of the lesion. According to the macroscopic findings, these symptoms began with the hemorrhagic spots under scales which fell out, after the collapse of the dermis, which was followed by lesion to form ulcer, and then the muscle was exposed. The fin was eroded mostly from the distal part, but sometimes from the basal part. Gills showed grey colour, and this part of the tissue collapsed. According to the histopathological findings, the dermis was exposed after the collapsed of the epithelium of the skin, and the necrosis of the musculature occurred, the muscular fibre being destroyed. The epithelial cells of gill tissue proliferated, thus gill filaments were conglutinated and collapsed. Fatty degeneration happened at the liver but the other organs seem to be normal. Treatment with the following mixtures were effective the water temperature of $22\~25^{\circ}C$, but not effective when the temperature was under as low as $13\~15^{\circ}C$. Mixture 1. Aivet (HB-115.HCI) 0.3ppm Malachite green 0.2ppm. Dipterex 0.4ppm Mixture 2. Furanace (P-7138) 0.05ppm Malachite green 0.2ppm Dipterex 0.4ppm When lesion healed, the epithelium, dermis, and the muscular fibre were regenerated.

  • Background: MMPs and TIMPs are important factors for abnormal remodeling the pulmonary parenchyme in idiopathic interstitial pneumonia(IIP) This study evaluated the expression of MMPs and TIMPs in the tissue of IPF, NSIP and normal control subjects. Method: The MMP-2 and -9 activity in the lung tissue was studied by gelatin zymography, and the expression of MMP-1, -2, -9, TIMP-1 and -2 in the lung tissue was measured by immunohistochemistry. Thirty five patients, who were diagnosed with IIP (UIP ; 22, NSIP ; 13), were enrolled in the immunohistochemical study. Thirteen patients with IIP (UIP ; 9, NSIP ; 4) and five patients with lung cancer were enrolled in the zymographic assay. Results: (1) The immunohistochemistry for MMP-1,-2,-9, TIMP-1 and-2 ; MMP-1,-9 and TIMP-2 were stained stronger in the UIP subjects than NSIP and the normal control. TIMP-2 was strongly stained in the UIP tissue. particularly the fibroblasts in the fibroblastic foci. (2) Zymography for MMP-2 and MMP-9 revealed MMP-2 to have prominent expression in the UIP tissue than in the NSIP tissue. Conclusions: These results suggest that the overexpression of the TIMPs and gelatinases in UIP might be important factors in the irreversible fibrosis of the lung parenchyme.

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease accompanies the rise in the prevalence of obesity, diabetes and the tendency toward high-fat dietary habits. Specifically, the higher prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in men and postmenopausal women seems to be caused by the protective effects of estrogen against liver fibrosis, or lack thereof. There are no effective preventive therapies for liver diseases because the mechanisms underlying the progression of fatty liver diseases to chronic liver diseases and the protective effects of estrogen against fibrogenesis remain unclear. Recently, it has been reported that the hedgehog signaling pathway plays an important role in the progression of chronic liver diseases. Hedgehog, a morphogen regulating embryonic liver development, is expressed in injured livers but not in adult healthy livers. The level of hedgehog expression parallels the stages of liver diseases. Hedgehog induces myofibroblast activation and hepatic progenitor cell proliferation and leads to excessive liver fibrosis, whereas estrogen inhibits the activation of hepatic stellate cells to myofibroblasts and prevents liver fibrosis. Although the mechanism underlying the opposing actions of hedgehog and estrogen on liver fibrosis remain unclear, the suppressive effects of estrogen on the expression of osteopontin, a profibrogenic extracellular matrix protein and cytokine, and the inductive effects of hedgehog on osteopontin transcription suggest that estrogen and hedgehog are associated with liver fibrosis regulation. Therefore, further research on the estrogen-mediated regulatory mechanisms underlying the hedgehog-signaling pathway can identify the mechanism underlying liver fibrogenesis and contribute to developing therapies for preventing the progression of fibrosis to chronic liver diseases.
